While the snappy sheetmetal is a galaxy-sized improvement over the old design, the real surprises come from the drivetrain. According to Jeep, the 2011 Compass will be able to kick out up to 28 mpg highway in all-wheel drive guise, which is some of the best fuel economy in the Crossover segment. Speaking of all-wheel drive, Jeep has honored the Compass with a Trail Rated model for those who want to put the tiny high-rider through its paces off road.

Jeep isn't known for sticking its Trail Rated badge on vehicles that can't do the deed, so odds are that the Freedom Drive II off road package-equipped Compass will be able to keep up with similarly capable metal from Jeep once the going gets rough. Skid plates, tow hooks, a full-size spare, 17-inch all-terrain tires, one-inch taller ride height and low-range capability are all part of the deal.

Under the hood, Jeep is offering the 2011 Compass with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 141 pound-feet of torque, as well as a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 172 hp and 165 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are available with either a five-speed manual gearbox or CVT (a unit we've loathed previously). The 2011 Compass is available in three trim levels, each of which is configurable with front or all-wheel drive as well as the low-range equipped off-road package. Hit the jump to have a look at the full press release.

....shhh.
It might be coming here, yet to be confirmed but the word is its seriously being considered to make a come back. Should be a winner with those great looks. Hope the low range pack comes too.... but dont hold your breath for that.

stooopid wind tunnel controlled body designs ....

Id have to reverse that into a parking spot so that the grille poked out & identified it as a jeep instead of a kia/daewoo/honda/whatever .... otherwise I would never find it again .... :D

Good to see the clearance and low range as part of the package tho ....

just looking on the US Jeep.com site - the new 2011 compass price starts at US$19k
In comparison, the Patriot over there is $16k and the 2dr wrangler is $22k.
Hopefully the price stays pretty similar (in comparison) when it is *hopefully* brought over here.

you would hope so but the problem for us is that for them the cars are built in country whereas we have importing costs etc and the australian government isnt know for its genorousity with low taxes!!!

I know what you mean, I think though to do that they would have to drop the patriot quite a bit for the compass to fit in in the middle? I find it hard to see how have two small SUVs competing with each other unless they broaden the price difference. We'll find out more next year, even us dealers dont get told much!!

The dash looks nice n clean & uncluttered. The dash of my neighbour's X5 (which I'm assuming is the segment the Compass is aiming for, at the lower end of course) looks like something out of a old Soviet nuclear reactor control room.
