Hi guys,

Just wanted to quickly introduce myself and my Willys CJ3B. I come from Perth own an Isuzu Mu 2.8TD and love 4wding, I also own a Royal Enfield 1953 and love the "old skool" look and the interesting characters it attracts. So I combined 4wding with old skool and bought my CJ3B:)

She has been in the shed for a couple of months and last weekend I finally started the full resto on it. I'll tear down completely and do a full build up again. In case anybody is interested my website is http://www.TheWillysWorkshop.com.

If your in Perth shoot me a text and come and have a look! If you are doing the same thing would love to have a chat if your arround Perth.

Day 1 and day 2 went well and I am almost ready to pull the body off!

Hey Cal, nice to meet you, I see you have a CJ3A? Interesting, would love to see some pics.

PLan is to fully restore her but with some subtle changes to make her more reliable and dependable. We are planning a big round Australia trip (including the Canning Stock Route :)) so mods I have planned are:

- Full rewiring including 12V, provisions for a small winch(hopefully detachable or something), some LED spots (detachable too), provisons for a 2nd battery setup in a trailer. Maybe some Marine carpet. But thats basically it. Ah I have been thinking about a canvas roof with mesh side walls, breezy but protected, thats just a thought.

Did you retsore your, any lessons learned?

No, mine is in kind of in hibernation at the moment.
Purchased her almost as she is with a Holden 202 under the hood and I've been doing the odd jobs that need doing to get her back to a registrable condition. Mostly gaskets, lighting, oil leaks, uni joints etc.
Mine will not be another Military Olive Drab clone ;)

Looking good, nice tyres:) Mine wont be too, alltough she was in the Korean war. I just plan on making it a good car, mainly used for travelling, touring and 4wding. Ah well, back to the shed I go :)

Looks fairly straight with mainly just surface rust so it should be a real good un !

Done a little bit more work today and removed the welded on brake pedal and the steering box. I can't for the life of me work out why the steering wheel has a "fake nut" on it:

http://www.thewillysworkshop.com/Images/P7260003.jpg

I also did not know what to do next as the next "washer" is firmly wedged in and reading the artucles it says "slacken the nut" and use a pully, what nut???

Removed those body bolts which were left (only 7 of the 15 or so) and worked out why she always leaned to the right, no body rubbers on the right, straight onto the frame, 1 left on the left lol.

Looks nice and clean now, ready for lift off tomorrow:

And she is loose, check out my video page:

I only have 1 problem and that is this spacer:

http://www.thewillysworkshop.com/Images/IMG_0485.jpg

Its a fairly large spacer between the axle where the clucth pedal and brake pedal are hinging on. I managed to make it move a bit but than it simply stopped. I WD40'd, I even put the blow torch on it for 2 minutes.... If anybody has any ideas greatly appreciated...

diagonal cut with hacksaw, cold chisel off
then make a new one,
or just keep heating it......

another thought, is the spacer part of the shaft, and the shaft screwed into the chassis?

Hi there Ronald!
Thats a great condition CJ3B to start off as a project vehicle. Keep up the good work in documenting the restoration on your web site and in here. Thats something that so many people wish they did after the fact.

Is it a fake nut or what is left of the horn? Did it have the horn button on it? Have you read this? - http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Tech/HornButton.html

If you find a spare Black "Sheller" steering wheel in your travels please let me know ;-)

Yeah check that it is actually a spacer, if it is heat untill its glowing cherry red the whole way round then remove once its no longer glowing.Bit off CRC helps to.

Try soaking it in 50/50 transmission oil and acetone.

Hey the pic of the ID plate, with the words TOKOE MOTORS- is it possibly STOKOE MOTORS with the S obliterated by a rivit or hole?
That would make sense as that is the name of the assembly, and distribution co in Melbourne for Jeeps around that era.
Post a close up for the curious.
I doubt it is ex Korean war, being a CJ- not a military model, and my guess is the Oz army was driving Austin Champs or S1 Landrovers around that time
But Im not a Mil Jeep expert, just general knowledge and happy to be proven otherwise.
Great project looks like a long loveaffair is on the way!.

"I doubt it is ex Korean war, being a CJ- not a military model, and my guess is the Oz army was driving Austin Champs or S1 Landrovers around that time"

Well the Aust Army never realy had ser1 Landrovers except for a couple odd ones for evaluation and the "Royal Landrovers" that were brought over for QEII that were then handed over to the Army for cerimonial purpose. 1st Landrovers in general service were 1958/9 ser2 short wheel bases. But the Army did evaluate a couple of CJ3Bs.

So who knows may be it could of been one of the trails CJ3B jeeps?

For those intested, I finally finished sandblasting the frame and axles. Really happy with the sandblasting so far, that is after I learned how fast nozzles wear out at 120psi, sand can not infinatly be re-used, and eye protection gets sandblasted too!

My shed pepared for the blasting (and very happy I did!):

Frame blasted and ready to be painted:

One axle before and one after blasting

End results:

All painting with POR15 where the packaging says "you can not remove POR15 from your hands after its cured", they are right lol.:D:D:D

[QUOTE=PhilCJ10;1217115]Hey keep up the good work you will end up with a great 3B at the end of the day. Checked out your website... fantastic!/QUOTE]

Thanks Phil, appreciate the encouragment, I need ti at the moment! I am slowly but surely making progress, never realized how much little bits need to be painted!

I am completely finished with the frame, it was the first part really finished. I thought I was finished with the axles till I heard the wheel bearings grinding:( So I had a bit of head scratching to do how to get them out, in the end I used a bigger hammer :)

I have also got the sandblasting thing under control, and the POR15 people are getting pretty rich from my purchases!

http://www.thewillysworkshop.com/Images/P8270153.jpg

All drums have been reskimmed and I have relined shoes specially sized to the drums:) I have reconditioned the brake cylinders, main and wheel ones.

So now I am on the hunt for all new wheel bearings, anybody any good tips, they are way more expensive than I thought.....

take the old bearings in to Statewide bearings

Thanks mate, I did and they are 370 for 4 corners, quite a bit more than the 170 from Allied bearings.... But maybe they are a different brand, I havent had much time to dig arround.

appreciate your reply.

wow that's a bit more expensive, than I expected, might have to look on some of the US web sites, are you on Early cj5.com?, they are a forum for early jeeps and might have a source

Yeh them spindle/knuckle cups and cones are the expensive ones even in the states i think they are $125...you will probably have to wait a couple of weeks and probably add abt $70 dollars for frieght but if you get some more parts it will be worth it...here are the major two and there are others

Wooohoooo, ordered the bearings today, from A$370 quoted here in WA to A$181 in Queensland, including shipping and the same brand.

I ordered via http://www.alliedbearings.com.au/.

Can highly recomend them as they reply fast (as in hours/minutes in comparison to other websites which, after a couple of days, have still not replied). They know their stuff (I actually gave them a wrong number and they picked it up straight away.

Can't believe the price difference...

Can't wait to get them and finally get my axles on a rolling frame:)

Mickb

Wow that is a good price ...from the states for front wheel bearings, rear wheel bearings and king pin/spindle knuckle bearings you are looking at around $300 for the lot...all seals are around $5 to $10...so thanks for the link ...cheers mick

No worries Mick, I havent received them yet so hold on with ordering till I check that they arent made out of wood or something:)

Today I put the springs, shocks, axles, cross member, engine mounts and cross member back in again, starting to look like a 4wd again!

http://www.thewillysworkshop.com/images/img_0704.jpg

Cant wait to get the bearings in and make her a rolling frame again!

Just need to sandblast the rims, paint them, get tyres, balance them, and oh yeah make a decision on the color lol.

Wow, its been a while since I posted but there is some progress!:D

http://www.colijns.net/images/P7290031.jpg

Tonight I managed to get the old girl up and running again, I had some trouble with the timing (way off it turned out) and the fuel pump (blocked fuel lines do not help). But now she starts easy and is running good.

Check out my youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RBQ8XglAf4&feature=plcp.

So all is going well, this weekend I'll re-install the radiator and than I can tune her properly, she is running a bit warm without it:)
