Hey guys. Discuss the best motor for an engine conversion in any Jeep model. What motors would suit what model? Turbo? Diesel? Drivetrains to suit? Etc.

Not that I have experience with it but I think the LS engines are ideal for the JK as long as there is an affordable conversion kit available that works correctly with existing systems, reason I say this is for the availability of spare parts and upgrades for LS engines where as the Hemi's are hard to come by.
I plan to do a conversion one day if I can get a kit for a fair price, motech offers one for around 5k but I would hate to see the cost of it landed here.

Massively depends on the receiving vehicle and also the intended main purpose.

Obviously there is many variables effecting it. To start of the discussions what about the most common ones:
Tj daily driver
Xj daily driver
Jk daily driver
Tj wheeler
Xj wheeler
Jk wheeler
Jk tourer

What motors would suit which and why?
Also out of personal interest what would be a good option for a tourer cj10?

For touring I'd be looking at a mid size turbo diesel, I have a small turbo diesel in my daily driver (car) and love it, a 3.0lt turbo diesel would be a great touring engine for a CJ and I'd love to stick something of that size in my XJ.

Cheers
Steve

I want more torque so I am collecting bits for my stroker project. Planning on building a torque monster. Major head work inc porting, extractors and 99 XJ manifold. Also hope to get a tuneable ECU so I can have it tuned for LPG and petrol and have it somewhere in the middle of the best of both worlds.

My CJ6 I have fitted a 308 mated to a Landcruiser 80 Series 5 speed & a ford 9" in the back.

Yes fun.

How ever on a couple of things I tested it on I have found that the V8 sits to to far back which has made the front end to light & gains no traction up steep inclines such as the the ones on the test track at the last Jambo at Rydal. However I could reverse throught them with ease. I need to load up the front end more, maybe a winch might be enough.

In the perfect world...
the Ford 3.5 TD Ecoboost, destroys the 5.9 Cummins for power and torque, and weighs a touch more than our 4.0
Mated to a C6 auto and an Atlas transfer, D60 in the rear, D44 in the front, run 35-42" tyres and whether you're bouncing up rocks or touring dirt road, you'll never have a worry again.
other engines I'd consider are the 351C the Tickford 4.0 and the AMC 360, things I want but would be far too big are the Cummins 5.9 the Ford 6.0, 6.7 & 7.3V8 diesels would all be spectacular.

I have a SBC 350 in my CJ10 and it purrs along nicely running 33" muddies with the original 4 speed T176 box and 4.1 Dana 60/44 diffs it sits on around 2250 rpm at 100ks and drinks about 18/20ltrs per 100k. This setup was in the ute when I bought it and for the amount that I use it,it is fine, but if I was to do this starting from scratch for a long haul tourer I would look at an efi 350 engine with a five speed box to get a little further on a tank.
A CRD diesel would be great but come at considerable cost to buy and fully install.

I am no expert on the diesel Jeep engines. But my neighbour has an old Hilux 4cyl diesel 4x4 and can drive 200km for just under $30 Tassie fuel prices. My XJ 4.0 on gas can do it for about $38 LPG 96c per litre. Given that I would reckon something in diesel would be the best. Easy access to fuel and cheaper to run. Although like I said I am unsure how well the Diesel Jeep engines perform mileage wise. Only thing with a diesel is reliability. I have read some posts over the years where diesel XJ owners have had serious probs with the engines, most of which seems to be from a neglectful previous owner.

How about a 3.0 CRD in a JK Rubicon
It was done as a concept back in 2006

Nice! I wish VM Motori would make a 5 cylinder with no egr, then I'd put that in!

Or to be silly, I'll just wait for an atomic battery mated to an electric motor to come out and then I'll only have to worry about fuel/charge every 20 years ;)

in my comp car I was getting better fuel economy & more power from a Commy V6 than my DSL would ever. (running 4.88's & 35's) & Commys are cheap & everywhere.

There's some rotary zooks on YouTube. Look awesome fun. I always wondered how a rotary would handle water too.
