Hi ALL!

It's me again...after checking out other JK's on other forums, I decided to do the relatively cheap modification of colouring the hinges of my 2014 Unlimited JK.

I used the Plasti-dip spray cans to colour the hinges. What lead me to use this was its removability, so if I didn't like it I could peel it off if necessary. All in all, I feel it gives it a great and unique look.

Details:

Cost: $AUD $48.75
Difficulty: Easy

Equipment:

1 x Plasti-dip can (https://www.autobarn.com.au/catalogsearch/result/?q=plasti+dip) $AUD29.99
Painting tape (http://www.bunnings.com.au/3m-50mm-scotch-blue-edge-lock-painters-tape-_p1661029) $AUD18.76
Newspaper/Scrap Paper
Sharp utensil

Instructions:

Clean the surface of the hinge
Cut and apply the painters tape around the hinge. Note that I didn't place the tape soo close to the edge of the hinge as you will be able to take a sharp utensil and trace along the edge so that it will peel off and remove relatively easily and have that professional sharp edge look. http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/imagehosting/324335498fc41e0347.jpg
Cover the surrounding areas using spare newspaper or scrap paper, obviously holding it in place using some tape. It is important you cover up real good to anticipate the overspray from the Plasti-dip. http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/imagehosting/324335498fc5d20713.jpg
Spray one coat on the hinge. Lightly dust the surface from all angles. Tips: We're doing 4 coats, so there is no need to go all out. There should be absolutely no dripping when you are done with one coat. Remember we are trying to achieve the best 'bond' with the hinge. http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/imagehosting/324335498fc752c090.jpg
Apply the Plasti-dip at least every 15 minute intervals.
Once done and dry, carefully remove the newspaper first.
Then using your sharp utensil, carefully trace along the edge of the hinge.
Then carefully remove the painters tape.
Finallly, peel off the edges of the Plasti-dip. http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/imagehosting/324335498fc8bae736.jpg
Repeat for all hinges, I also did my hood! http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/imagehosting/324335498fcab3fc37.jpg

Looks great man!
Having a white LWB myself I'm pretty keen to do something similar.
What kind of "sharp utensil" would you recommend using to avoid scratching the paint, and was it harder doing the hood with the gaps, etc. between the hood hinge and front cowl dealie?

Thanks for the feedback, I just used a small kitchen knife haha. To be honest you just gotta take your time, use common sense, and apply appropriate pressure and as a result you will visibly see the cut your making. When I did it, the original paintwork was fine :).

When doing the hinges on the hood, the only hard thing was in terms of covering up. I covered up part of the windshield and wipers. When you do it just tape up the gaps :). It's really a common sense mod.

Don't be afraid of some overspray getting on places you don't want, as plasti dip is removal and a moist cloth and elbow grease will give it a good clean up.

Good luck :) you'll love the look.

How does the dip hold up once you open your doors ? Does the dip stretch and ruin ?

I've opened the doors and hood and the plast-dip hasn't been affected. And there was no alteration that needed to be made so that it would open nicely.
