Alright guys,

Tookles and I are in the midst of planning a Border track weekend somewhere near the end of July and early August. So far we are planning on going Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So two nights camping with wheeling and exploring in-between. Both nights of camping are going to be at a campground with toilets.

Friday night
The plan is that we all make our own way towards Pinnaroo, meeting at Pine Soak Hut campground and stay there the night.
For people only wanting to come for the Saturday and Sunday, this is where we will be meeting and leaving from.

Saturday
We leave from Pine Soak, heading east towards the border. Meet up with the track and make our way South along it. Having a go at any obstacles we find along the way, and maybe detouring off to some quarry’s that are nearby if we are ahead of time.
Eventually making our way to Red Bluff and picking a campsite there for the evening.

Sunday
Heading off from Red bluff, passing through Bordertown if anyone needs fuel, we’ll make our way towards Little Desert National park. The plan is to have lunch and play abit in the sand before we head off to Frances to refuel and pump up our tires.

Apparently there is a pretty good pub in the town if anyone wants to stick around for tea, otherwise it’s 3 hour drive back to Adelaide to finish off the trip.

Bordertrack isn’t the easiest track or the hardest track in SA, but it should have something for just about everyone. Where the harder obstacles are, there are paths around them, so everyone should be fine.

Hope we see a few people interested, it should be a really fun trip.

Sounds great, I am interested, but not yet able to commit.

Not sure about the quarries down that way near red bluff, there's not any other tracks really apart from going into Big Desert.
Should be a good trip I reckon, some bits of the southern bit would be tricky when really wet, the 3 or 4 chicken tracks were as bad as the main.
I might try and book the Friday off and head up early if I can make it.

Yeah neither of us have been up that way yet so open to suggestions.
I'll be heading up Friday, I'll knock off early and be looking at leaving around 2-3 ish

Skettler

I'll be taking friday off aswell. So it looks like me might all get there pretty early.

Depending on how long the big holes south of Red Bluff take I would probably Chuck a right on Emu Flat Rd and head straight to Keith for fuel and home. It's still a fair hike from that end of the track.
Any chance the date could be swapped to the weekend before? Last weekend of school holidays?

Skettler
17-06-2016, 10:28 AM
It's the girlfriends birthday the weekend before unfortunately. So we cant do any earlier.

But yeah we were discussing that last night. Depending how long the bog holes take, we may not make it to little desert.

Grippy
19-06-2016, 06:56 PM
I don't reckon I'll be able to make the weekend after the school holidays (I have the holidays off), or I might try and squeeze it in and leave Friday night and head up in the dark and head home Sunday morning after tackling the bog holes south of Red Bluff.
It won't take too long to make it to Red Bluff on Saturday so we will have a bit of time up our sleeves.

Skettler
26-06-2016, 10:51 PM
Sounds great mate. Like I said, we're open to suggestions so if you have anything to add from experience, we'll be sure to take it in our stride.

We'd love to see you even if it's just for the 2 days.

A friend sent me an invite to this Jeep trip. As far as I know the plan at the moment is to depart from Pine Hut Soak at about 9am on Sat 30 July. Looks like a few people will meet at Le Cornu and leave from there early morning. Currently 7 people have said they're going.

Originally I had commitments that weekend but it seems like they've freed up. Hence I'm hoping I might be able to make it to this!

Is the plan still for a Friday departure or will it be changed to be in line with the trip planned on the facebook page?

Skettler

We're doing a Friday departure. As is tookles. But it's just to Pinnaroo/pine soak hut.

We're not doing any if the track until Saturday, so if you wanted you can meet us there.

In regards to the Facebook event. I haven't heard anything from them about meeting up, so unless they choose to meet up with us, we'll stick to this plan and maybe run into them.

Hey guys,

I did the border track a few months ago, check this short vid of some of the fun! Worth the trip for sure, a few challenges with some climbs, very soft sand.
Maxtrax defiantly needed for us. Annoying to see that stupid matting layed down, making what would be a good challenge into a breeze...

I'd probably have to meet up with you guys on the Saturday as me and the mrs have a function to go to the night before.

Is this going to be a jeep only kind of affair or is it open to others?

What's the plan for the Sunday? Would be good to break camp by about 9, tackle the tricky bottom section which should be loads of fun after all the rain?
If my last tripon the Border Track is anything to go by, I and anyone else in a V8 Grand would then need to head over to Tintinara for fuel and head home.

Here is a good link to show where Pine Hut Soak is.

http://www.exploreaustralia.net.au/South-Australia/Murray/Scorpion-Springs-Conservation-Park/Pine-Hut-Soak-camping-area

Tookles and I are going to be heading down together, so if anyone wants to meet up friday afternoon at the Pinnaroo petrol station we can meet up and head down to the Hut together.

Everyone needs to remember to bring $10 cash for the park entry pass. Just pop it in the self registration box.

What's the deal with Saturday, is the plan to head across to the Border Track on the rest of Pine Hut Soak track and Nanam Well track or head down Center Track and then across to the Border Track and over to Red Bluff?

Skettler
24-07-2016, 02:33 PM
We're probably going to be getting there about 5, maybe 6. Could be a bit before, but I'm meant to be moving into a new house on the Friday.

We could do either Grippy. I think Tookles and I looked at heading from Pine Hut over past scorpian springs and then down Border track through to red Bluff.

Since we are all meeting at Pine Hut we could do either. Head across to border track or we can head down centre.

Have you done both before? What would you suggest is more challenging/fun?

Grippy
24-07-2016, 03:07 PM
I've done the Border Track from Pinaroo. Was mighty challenging in the dry, right when it first opened again this year, very chopped up.
Should be a cake walk after the rain, sand will be packed down nicely.

Wow I have suddenly realised how close this is now!

Looks like we have a fair few cars coming now which will be nice. I hope everyone has everything organised (including recovery gear your personal food etc, and if everyone brings a bit of firewood just to help out that would be fantastic!)

As Skettler said we will be in Pinaroo around 5 for anyone that wants to meet there, otherwise I will leave my UHF on for a few hours once we are there and turn it on again as soon as I am up in the morning.

I think Sunday try and get out nice and early (9 sounds perfect) so we can make the most of the day on the southern end of the track and still get home at a reasonable time.

Hope to see you all there on the weekend!

The way it looks I will be arriving in the dark so save me a decent spot for my swag :D
Pine Hut Soak is quite a small campground so space may be at a premium, or some of us on the track :p Should be plenty of firewood about but it's all pre burnt from the bushfires, and doesn't last long or we could all bring a bag each of hardwood
Red Bluff on the other hand is massive for Sat night.

Yeah I'm hoping pine soak will be big enough seeing as not everyone is coming Friday night.

If we can get definite numbers for Friday night I'll make sure you all get a spot one way or another hah!

I've got a bag already shouldn't need too much but better safe than sorry

Have you flushed all the mud out of the radiator?
Last time mine had a mud bath it took a few goes at about 15 minutes each with the hose full bore on various parts of the radiator front and back, top and bottom and shit was still coming out

I washed mine out well and no more issues. Going to install a compressor driven high pressure water tank after this learning curve lol
Also going for a bigger better radiator

Yeah I've washed it out, just sitting down before putting it all back together before work tomorrow haha.

The heat wasnt nearly as bad today and I washed an awful lot of mud out this afternoon, so I'm sure it'll be right.

Looking into hood louvers and Trans coolers now though.

Yep many factory radiators can't cope with small mods, let alone the stress your engine would be under running the massive tyres, plus the extra heat from the blower.
Adam does your engine turn over at all yet after the long rest?
Rob, glad you got it sorted, at least it;s a fairly easy fix.

I have only just sat down after going all the way back with a car trailer and hauling the xj home. I'm going to start with draining all the oils and replacing spark plugs etc tomorrow and try and get down to the problem. Had a talk with a friend of a friend who is a mechanic and he will help me put a new motor and gearbox in if needed so wont be long and ill be back! I can't wait already haha

It really was Wombat.

Just finished up doing new trans oil, and the Radiator has been flushed twice and is loving having one kind of coolant in it, not a mix of 3.

She's ready to go again mechanically, just need to fix the body damage, dry the carpets off, drain the rest of the mud and bolt the license plate back on.

Tookles and I were saying how Tank made Robe sound pretty great, so maybe that'll be the next trip.

its mainly the grip holding her back as im still on stock tyres. They are ok, but from the looks of this trip they would have been my limiting factor.

Got the WH up and running again, a set of new alternator brushes and it's once again charging. Surprisingly the alternator is actually pretty easy to get out of these cars... unlike just about everything else! Also cleaned out the radiator.... took a good 15 minutes of constant flushing until it seemed somewhat clean!

I've also heard that Robe is good fun, It's actually next on my list of places to head so i'm definitely keen to head down that way.

Robe to Beach port is fun, lots of sand, no good until it warms up though, the beaches get battered through winter and it's very easy to get stuck, drowned etc.

Just had a thought on a how to flush out radiators on the track. A water pump with a 120 micron filter. Should get most of the sediment out of the water so you could draw water from a bog hole and use it to roughly clean out a clogged up radiator as a stop gap before getting back to civilisation. Might have a play and see if I can come up with something before the next trip.

Oh and also I just changed my username from WhO to Parso if you're wondering who this is!

Have done Beachport/Robe run more than once in the winter and not too bad in general. A part of the beach was washed away on one trip, but on others we just watched the tides and made it through. It's great fun just playing in the dunes at Beachport. I'm very keen to tag along.

But first, I need a lift on the lowrider. [emoji964]

Autos can be damaged by towing if the output shaft is being turned because their oil pump works off the input shaft from the engine. If your transfer case was put into neutral between Hi four and Low four, your transmission would not turn and no damage could happen to it.

Out of curiosity I measured the current draw of the car at idle with normal loads (stereo, fan on low) and found it bounces between 30 and 35 amps! Not surprising really that even with 15 amps of charge going in from my battery charger off the genny that the voltage was slowly trickling down. These are electrically hungry cars!

Best bet is to pull the rad on the jk only takes 10 mins.
after flushing in place it looks clean but once you pull it you'll see it's still 30% blocked with dry mud and twigs/grass seeds.

Those of you going to robe don't need any more mods just 12-15 psi and go exploring you'll be surprised where the jeeps will go. I have run as low as 5 psi on beadlocks just to see what it'll climb.

The issues from the weekend are all sorted, alternator was a relatively easy fix. Something on the jeep that was actually easy to get out haha! Starter not engaging was just the starter pinion sticking so a bit of lube and happy days. Had another issue crop up which threatened to be the rear main seal however it seems to have self resolved *touch wood* Also had an oil pressure sensor issue which luckily has just turned out to be a sensor so again an easy fix!

So nearly sorted. I'm waiting for a few goodies from rockauto to get ahead on some routine maintenance and fix the oil px issue and i'll also be chucking in an oil cooler and doing a bit of work on the undertrays to try and help encourage a pressure difference over the radiator to help keep the jeep cool!

I've decided.... going through big mud holes is just too much work haha, i'll stick to fresh water crossings from now on ;)

Yeh mate I'm happy to help wherever possible. I've done a fair few engine transplants and everything else over the years so am happy to pitch in. Time is the biggest killer as work is commanding most of my attention at the moment however if you throw together a working bee on a weekend with a bit of notice I'm sure you'll be able to get a few hands! An engine swap if all goes to plan and with the right tools can generally be done in a day with enough hands and I can't imagine a jeep being as bad as a jap car! Where about's are you located?

Good to hear everyone's sorting it all out, I'm still waiting for my TPS to rock up

On a side note I have been obsessing about front and rear bars for my car and have seen a fair few of these bars completed on the WG Cherokees. http://flatland4x4.com/product/99-04-jeep-grand-cherokee-front-non-winch-bumper/
Just wondering if anyone knows a place here in Adelaide that will do a cheap job of whacking the plans in their CNC to cut the pieces out and I'll have a crack at welding it together (at least all the welds get ground flat) :)

If anyone knows someone with a CNC machine I'd also be interested in getting some work done.

Steel or alloy work?

Speak to Adam from AT performance http://atperformance.com.au/ He can do alloy CNC work, not sure about steel though.

Surely if he does alloy he can do a simple steel plate. Most blokes I've seen that have made them have made them out of scrap pieces.
I really love the rear WJ bumper with wheel carrier, I reckon thats the first one I'll do, maybe Ill tack it together with my dodgy welding skills and run it down to Adam to run some proper beads over it with carton in hand for his skills :), just keen to find out how much the materials and cutting would be.
I've read that some have bought the plans, tranferred them to cardboard and cut the whole lot out at home with an angle grinder :( seems like it would be a shite load of discs, time and work doing it that way though. $30 per plan is a bloody bargain though.

As far as getting steel plate cut there are definitely places that can plasma / laser cut if you give them the plans. Bugger doing it all with an angle grinder! It'd almost be worth buying a cheap plasma cutter off ebay or the likes!

Yeah I would get it all cut professionally. By the time you buy the steel and cuttings discs and spend hours truing to make it perfect you are better to get it supplied and cut. Then you are starting with perfect shapes and haven't wasted all your time and effort grinding steel.

So. I am planning on doing the big swap on 17th sept. Is anyone able to help out that weekend? I am in flagstaff hill. Fingers crossed!!

Also I am in the process of organising a robe to beach port trip for the long weekend in October and hoping you all can make it. I'll make a new thread for that over the next few days :)

That's the Saturday isn't it? I have a school thing in town that day, I have to go as half my class are in it. I can come after though, should be done by late arvo.

Ok also just have to find a place to cnc my steel, I have found a heap of 3 and 5mm steel plate for free :D then I can weld it all up and I'll have 2 new steel bumpers, not sure if I want the winch or non winch bumper.

Id def go winch then later down the track if you want one you can easily mount it

I reckon if you have already pulled as much of the ancillaries out and swapped them over then it shouldn't take too long, few hours, allowing for fuck ups and the inevitable breaking of things that happens😆
Is yours an auto or manual? Might wanna do the clutch while it's out if manual

Yeah it's awesome, you start off on the Border Track, only just, then chuck a left onto Firebreak Track which heads into Big Desert Park in Victoria. Heaps of little tracks in there, some huge sandhills.
