View Full Version : Onboard Air - Show us what you have?

So, my imaginations are running wild at the moment and one thing I hate carrying is the air compressor.

Show us what you have for onboard Air. Ideally, I'd like to mount one in the engine bay or squeeze one behind bull bar if possible. Otherwise under the spare wheel area(outer), where the auxiliary tank would go. I would also look at a 4L-10L tank.

I am all about this as I love solutions to make a day on trails/beach easier/quicker/lazier but I genuinely haven't found a way without significant downsides.

Any decent compressor is too loud to run inside the cabin if you have passengers, they get super hot if you run them in the engine bay and you'd have to raise the bonnet like a pilgrim to use it.

Best solution I have so far is having an externally accessible anderson connector and using that to power a portable compressor.

Best ones ive seen are internally mounted compressors with an air outlet /quick disconnect in a useful spot, however quite loud in the car.

If you have the ARB onboard, either single or twin, you can mount it near the upper left front strut - I believe Murchinson also sell the bracket for this. You would forgo the plastic trim area. My only problem would be, how do you route that snorkel in future if you occupy this space?

Running inside the cabin would be too loud. I have seen one video of someone mounting the air compressor under the passenger seat - That would be awfully loud I would think. I have a battery fitted there so no go.

Mounting it under the auxiliary tank area, just wondering how much dust/dirt or water can a air compressor withstand?

I had 2 ARB Compressors fail from being under the bonnet and getting too hot, albeit in a Patrol. The supply hose used to pop off as well regularly from getting too hot so I wouldn’t mount one under the bonnet anymore. Plenty of others do though so perhaps it was unique to the location I had it or something, but ARB replaced under warranty both times which suggests it was a installation issue, then it failed again and I bought a different unit.

I would strongly recommend not having it under the bonnet, I’ve heard plenty of stories and some mates of mine as well, have all had issues with their ARB compressors, and all were under the bonnet. I’ve had my VIAIR 480c unit for over 5 years, and it looks brand new still, pumped up 5 cars in a row without stopping (albeit slower than an ARB).

I installed mine in the back under the floor, with a small 1lt air tank as well, any bigger would be pretty hard to fit inside. Being non ARB, it’s actually pretty quiet and also being under the floor helped a lot. Being inside means no water or dust to worry about. I lined the plastic parts nearby with insulated foil to protect it from heat, haven’t had an issue when using it

Do you leave the spare well open when its running?

I noted you have a custom frame, please share more photos!!

Im going to build something similar.

I've been thinking about trying to mount dual battery and compressor in the GC. I think the best option would be to use a tyre carrier for the spare and then use the spare wheel well for a battery and compressor.

But I don't really want my spare on the back, so I've given up on the idea.

Here's some great drawer set ups for inspiration:

what do you find is a negative for the spare on the rear . I've found it makes changing a tyre a million times easier . It doesn't impeed my rear view and gives me a buffer from morons at the rear :)

plus my recovery gear and battery is in the spare wheel area .

I've never had to change a tyre on the Jeep, so having it easily accessible isn't really a plus. And I like being able to remotely open the boot, then hit the button to close it and walk away, it's convenient with full hands, rather than having to swing the tyre holder out.

I'm waiting to see what new fourbies come out in the next couple years, we need something bigger....

There was no need to have the wheel well open, theres plenty of space underneath for it to draw air (between the wheel well and the back seats is open)

I didn't end up taking many photos when I was making it but this should give you an idea. I made my own frame out of scrap metal I had laying around and did my first weld :). I kept it cheap and basic as I wasn't sure what I really wanted in the end, but I was happy with the result. Very sturdy and takes as much weight as I could put on it.

Sorry it might be a little hard to see, the frame bends around the air tank at the back. I then had some spare brackets that miraculously were the perfect size and fit to secure it over the air tank and use the existing bolts in the floor.

I ended up hinging the wooden floor to the frame so I could get to the spare tire if I ever needed to. I even got an actuator to help lift it (it would be heavy with everything on top). I installed it but never got around to wiring it up.

Anyway, here are the pics:

Great idea Sandez - I'm inspired to do something similar.

What have you done with the air line? Do you have to lift the floor to access the compressor or have you mounted a quick disconnect outside of the wheel well?

Cheers,

Sorry for the amateur drawing . The red was the line under the floor, the blue the line above floor but under the drawer. The gold circle is where I had the outlet. Had to do it that way because the floor was hinged.

http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/imagehosting/289425adc6a191f2bb.jpg

You could route the hose under the floor in front of the spare tyre so it pops up where the hole is near the green X. Then make a plate for the outlet there so it's tucked away but still accessible.

I haven't got a complete photo because before I finished everything, I pulled it all out as my circumstances changed and I was about to sell the car. But things have changed again, so I might put it all back it (oh the fun!)

I deliberately had the gap under the drawer so I could run the air line, install a water pump, install relays, CB radio body (remote unit) and any other gadget I wanted to hide. That way, I could get to it fairly easy just by removing the drawer. I also had all my switches up the front (other than the water pump) in the centre console as pictured below.

what size tank is that?

its about a 12.5lt tank, 20cm d x 40cm h, so it doesn't hang lower than the back diff
