Did the High Country in mid-November, using Dargo as base. Hope the town is OK. Fire is perilously close to Bright, which is where we kicked off.

The area is brilliant but it may be a year or two before it looks scenic again.

Doesn't look good for our club trip down to the High Country in March. From what I have seen most of the areas we were thinking about to or near are now burnt out - not good for the scenery....

We had a great spot to camp just out of Dargo right on river and only 2 k's from Pub
There is still or will still be plentyof country to see and drive even after fires can scan map and send it to you of the areas that we covered
on our 12 day journey (might give you some ideas)

Would be excellent if you could do that Grant - as you said it may give us some more ideas of where to go.

Thanks.

After talking to Parks Victoria today it looks like out major trip for the year will not be to Victoria. It sounds really bad and most of the National Parks are all closed and most tracks inaccessable. Parks Victoria could not give any timeframes as to when the affected areas would be reopened but doesn't sound like it will be anytime soon.

Any other ideas for major treks to do. We have 16 days and leaving from the Gosford Area (1 hour north of Sydney). We might even go up to visit the Jimmyb National Park.....

I heard it is unlikely to open again this year.

for the latest upto date info on the HighCountry in vic look at their web site at
www.nre.vic.gov.au (http://www.nre.vic.gov.au)
but seems like the high country tracks will be shut all year this year

As a follow up - I was up at Stirling and Craigs Hut on Mon. That area is open and while it provides some awesome views, the driving is pretty tame. We did drive a few tracks NW of Stirling, incl Mine Ck, Westons, Mt NO.3, Buttercup Jeep and Kings. You are not permitted anywhere in the Alpine National park which cuts out most of the driving.

The police have set up a 1800 number which has a recorded message (1800 444 343). If your tck is not mentioned - you are allowed to drive it.

Does anyone have any good maps of this area? I have a friend who wants to do this track.
