Your only options are Opposite lock, Kaymar anf TJM have a nice one.
Most of these wont fit if you have a 97 on XJ though!
I used to make them and sell them to the local Jeep dealer and you can see some of the customers cars on my site in the Exterior ideas page.
Yeah i have a 1999 model
The rear tyre carrier I have is the Kaymar one which has to be used with their rear bumper. Hickey has the same one as well.
The only problem is the Kaymar is only for the pre-97 XJs.
I believe there are rear tyre carriers out there that are attached to the Hayman-Reese hitch-style towbar, don't know who makes them though.
I know Suburban 4WD can make a post-97 rear bumper + tyre carrier, similar to Kaymar, but they need your XJ for a few days to make and fit it.

HI
if you don't mind me asking how much was the mopar one? BRIZXJ
kyro, we just bought a couple in from japan, there upto 7/97 units, they couldnt be that hard to make fit on a 99.
$480 inc tax a kit second hand.

Kyro, the MOPAR (Canada) spare wheel carrier cost me $700, I didnt notice that yours is a '99. Mine is a '96 with a 'glass rear door, the carrier requires that an internal re-inforcing plate is installed, yours would have to be different but possibly could be modified. The biggest fitting issue I had was with the bracket fittings on the bumper....skinned knuckles, a few swear words and it took about 13 stubbies to finish the job.

Why the change Jimmy? Is it just to bring the C.O.G down a bit?

I Did some measuring last weekend with regards to how much interior space I would gain by moving the spare to the outside and here is what I found
by taking out the spare I gain approximately 7 inches withwise not a lot when you think about it.
have a shelf made up that still allows the spare to be easily removed also fridge slide sits on top of shelf pull fridge forward to access spare very easy to remove still.
With tyre hung on rear EVERY Time I want to get into the rear I have unlatch and swing spare out of way before I can access rear (real pain in ass)
so my spare can stay where it is
If I put it on roof cannot get into carport or underground parking at work (even bigger bummer as parking at work is free, "pay to have a handicap sometimes"
But in the end it all boils down to individual choice)
JJ, over nite freight to most places would run at $33 max I would think but I dont know where you are exactly. e-mail me direct if you are keen still, i've got a couple left..

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">The main reason I want to get it out of the back is the 30x9.5 won't fit in the standard spot easily and my touring tent folds into a rectangular shape which is a touch too long to fit with the spare tyre in place. In the meantime I plan to take the spare out, build a false floor to slide the tent under and lay the spare down on top of the floor. If I was running standard tyres and had the 9ftx9ft tent I wouldn't bother taking the tyre out eithier.
Cheers

I have a spare wheel roof rack now
(it fits to the factory rails), it is placed at the back of the roof.
I only have the standard size wheels and tyres on my XJ.
I wanted to put a smallish basket infront of that. So I could put roof-mounted spotties infront.
And put 2 reverse spot lights off the back.
I dont want much weight on the roof.
Its good to get the spare wheel out of the car.
But the extra lights would help.
