It's my 5th wedding anniversary coming up - my wife gets jewelry - I get Jeep bits! tongue.gif

I looking at the TJ Safari Snorkel and their website says it interferes with softtop operation... can anyone with one elaborate?

Thanks.

what they mean is that it is a bitch to get the drivers side soft door off. it can be done but it takes about 10 minutes of fiddling around. not a big deal but a bit of a pain.

Thanks Ando. I have full steel doors so cool.

me too. remember though if you are in the habit of removing the doors you won't be able to get them off unless you undo the bolts that attaches the snorkel to the window piller to give you room to lift the door up and off.

You can fix the problem with the half door windows by shortening the front locating bar - then you dont have to lift the window as high to get it out and it doesn't hit the snorkel.

crikey. why didn't i think of that!!

Matt,

I got my snorkel slightly modified on installation, although I am not overly sure what exactly happened - think mounting brackets were moved slightly. As such, I have had no difficulties with putting windows in or out and the window strut remains uncut. Cutting front window strut can result in flex and instability in the window and is not recommended by ARB (I personally don't believe this but that is what is officially said.) For details on snorkel modifications you can talk to ARB northside (Traction4) about what is involved. Cost was about $70 (1 hr labour). I think cutting would be cheaper and perhaps easier.

I've had my snorkel for a couple of years now with a cut front strut and no probs.Just have to have the door open at no more than 45 deg to get it in and out..now if I can just figure out a mounting system that supports the snorkel with the screen down I'd be really happy.. :D

Thanks guys,

Ordered one today from one of the local ARB outlets for $385 unfitted. I still think they are one of the ugliest safari snorkles designed cos of avoiding the US battery tray position but my TJ has taken a dunking once already.

I'm surprised any air can get through that plethora of pipe in the 'stock' safari setup.
I've got one on my TJ, and I always thought about running the pipe up from under the spare battery tray and via some kind of custom cone type air box and directly into the engine that way...
I thought about it, but that's unfortunately about as far as I got... smile.gif

i was going to buy one but noticed that they only use a 50mm pipe, stuff that i want my engine sucking in some air not some little pissy shit. i understand that it uses cold air induction but in the mud etc you have to turn the bugger around, impossible on the tj snorkel - shocking design
and once turned around and not going a high speed cold air induction is not existant.
50mm pipe is thinner that what is run from the air filter box to the engine (or air flow metre) which i think off hand is an 75mm pipe.

want i did instead was convert the standard air filter box to suck air from the rear of the engine bay using an 80mm pipe that runs to above the spare battery plate - this is only used 4wding so at low speeds the reducion of air not coming from the fan is compromised by the size of the pipe.

since then i havn't sucked up one bit of mud or water - previously i had done it 3 times. the spare battery plate stops splash coming up and the pipe is at a higher level that the original. - runs better than the standard air filter system in terms of performance.

i believe this method is better that the safari snorkel and much cheaper - i will post instrauctions and photo's within the coming days cause a few ppl have asked me for photo's by email i havn't sent them.

the only other alternative i ahve considered is to have a custom made one done by an exhurst specialist - would cost a bit more but heaps better - maybe the same a a safari fitted.

do about a 3inch pipe, as you can get 3inch snorkel tops and cold air induction here i come - combined with a k&N and your in business

mmm old thread :)

Does anyone know if the US or 'secondary' battery tray (on aussie models) needs to be removed to fit the safari snorkel? The reason i ask is because i've got 2 compressors and an array of circut breakers fitted to my spare battery tray.

cheers

Dont have to remove it but you need to trim it a bit. I did anyway.
If you need pics I can dig them up.
This is an award winning dig up though:wink:

LOL at EJ....

Does TJM make them - forget the brand they market (Air...) but their snorkels look "nicer" than the Safari IMO.

Had a Safari Snorkel fitted to my TJ a week & a half ago. It was fitted by TJM here in Newy. Apparently the Safari is the only one available for the TJ (so they told me).

From what I can tell, no removal/trimming was required. The siren for my alarm is mounted there and didn't need to be moved.

A question for others with this snorkel - is the tubing from the snorkel to the airbox zip-tied to your dipstick ? Just curious as this is how mine has been done.
