View Full Version : 231 to 242 trasfer case conversion
Hi,
Just had a good offer on full time (NV242) tcase. Thinking of converting over my cherokee 5spd from part time to f/t system.
Seen the US sites with conversion details, just curious anyone done it here on a AX15 5 spd manual? Did you get too much backlash in the driveline?
Cheers

i thought all XJ's comes with a 242
well i learn something new everyday :D
maybe give Mick a call?
he fitted the 242 in my jeep..
Thanks Billsta,
I knew submick had done a 242 into yours, I spoke to him briefly about it back when he was doing it.
Only XJ autos have '242 tcase. In Aus... that means most, in the US '242 was optional on autos only. I have diesel, which only comes with 5spd and '231. Not sure why '242 never fitted to 5spd man, thinking maybe three diffs means lots of gear backlash, must be three times worse than 1... ie clunks on clutch and gearchanges.

DXJ,
Are you 100% that you've got the AX-15 and not the AX-5??
Like Billsta I'm not way up on the XJ's, but I'll see what help we can track down....

Hi Wooders,
Yes definately ax15, fill plugs are on opposite sides.
The conversion to F/T 4wd has been a side issue for me for a while. From what I can teell from US sites all i need to change is the tcase input gears from 231 to the 242 and it will bolt up to the ax15. Will need changes to driveshafts, and mountings.
I am just nervous that I will find i get real big clunks on each gear change as three differentials worth of gear backlash is taken up. Not a problem with auto trans as torque conv always maintains pressure against gears. Then again Prado etc don't seem to have a problem. Curious why Jeep never fit 242 to manual trans.
I think I have convinced myself that I shouldn't convert :(
