On the secondhand set of Swampers I got there is a small chunk out of the sidewall. Between where the tread ends and the rim. It's probably into about 2 of the 6 plys. Can this be filled in and repaired by the tire shop?

Hi,

My opinion is that you should chuck out a tyre with nicks into the sidewall plys.

Too easy to have a tyre blow out and get you an appointment with the insurance company write-off loss assessor graemlins/crying.gif

If the cuts are superficial into the rubber but definately NOT into the plys maybe I would think it okay, but have it checked at a tyre place first.

The tyre guy actually said the tyre was ok. No cords showing in the chunk. So it hasn't gotten through the first ply.

Trouble is - if your not sure of the rubber bits keeping you off the ground then U should piff 'em.

At 100 km/h the tyre is destined to de-laminate in the sidewall under pressure and temperature.

Most guys think it will be OK when off road but don't consider the time getting to and from the venue - so to speak.

"If in doubt - don't!!!"

Steve,

What made you say it had been through the first two chords?
Can you see the chords?
Generally it's better to be safe than sorry, so it's extremely hard to give a suggested jugdement call from a keyboard...
Did the Tyre dude say yup it's safe to use, or just a casual glance and "It's ok"
If you know what I mean....

Wooders,

My initial post was done from work. And the chunk was slightly bigger in my mind from a distance than it is in reality. No you cannot see any cords. The small piece that's out of the sidewall is about the size of a 5 cent coin. The tyre guy I went to is pretty good. He had a very close look at it. I told him about runs on the highway and all. But I'm still thinking it over.

FYI

Kumho no longer imports Mud terrains to Oz. AT's only. How $260 for a BFG MT KM? The STT was $280. Oh yeah that's for a 33X12.5X15

AY,

33x10.5 BFG KM mudders here in CBR are $256 - $265, so the $260 would seem to be a reasonable price, even accounting for the fact that the 33x12.5 are the more popular size and therefore volume sell is a bit better causing better prices.

I think they are a good tyre (tire), they seem soft enough to lay some rubber one a rock (and therefore cut a bit too) but ard enough to last awhile on road.

Noted in another post though by MattC is his long life out of the Coopers (and Gordo too). Mine are too new to give a good impression of life span as they are only 3000k's old.
