Here a C&P from what I'd typed up on the old Extreme Jeep Board - Hope that helps...

OK most 12volt compressors, either carry or mounted quote a nice high looking pressure (PSI), however this belies the actual rate(CFM) to reach the quoted pressure. A litle kmart cigarette plug compressor might say 200PSI in the box - but it would have fried itself before getting it's first tyre to 50PSI.

Also as the pressure increases the rate decreases. Eg from the 4wd warehouse site (http://www.4wdwarehouse.com.au/bigred.html):

Brand...BigRed.....BlueTongue...ARB........System1
0psi.....1.38cfm..1.07cfm........0.85cfm....1.31cf m
30psi....095cfm...0.65cfm........0.35cfm...0.83cfm

Now if you look at Yorks, there are three different models 6cfm, 8 cfm & 10 cfm....Now as the psi raises, becuase they are ENGINE driven they basically maintain that cfm rate MUCH more...By the time you hit 30psi, the 6cfm pump is probably still putting our 5cfm and the 10cfm pump probably about 8.5cfm.....WAY WAY more than the puny 12volters.

Now for those interested in the york here's any easy way to identify the various compressors:
http://www.onboardair.com/york_id/shaft_id.gif

Next the supply/cost. Yorks were widely used in 1980's vintage Volvos as A/C compressors. After a 30minute ring around I was about to find a compressor for $50 (with no warranty), through to $100 for a rebuilt with 6 months warranty unit....Given that the average 12volt compressor is going to cost $300-$400 and some even twice that....The York obviously leaves a LOT of money left to pay for the mounts etc required.

Anywasy attached is a link to so further reading for those interested in a more serious OBA Setup. (http://members.home.com/rough-riders2/tech_page/york/york.html)

Hope that helps inspire you a bit tongue.gif

on the subject of the york compressor a mate picked one up for me the other day at a sale. Works perfectly. Not to sure what size it is yet as I havn't seen it yet. But my question being where do i find a air pressure switch to put in the system. I have a tank ready to go but havn't been able to find the pressure switch.
Oh and wooder hurry up and mount yours will you so i Don't have to do all the thinking for myself as I'm really not good at that.

Speaking of Yorks... I found a copy of the York Service Manual on the web and other stuff - may be of use.

Deane, york is only a brand and chances are you wont be doin much more than pumpin up tyres and li-los right?
Find your nearest Auto A/C shop and go lookin in their bin. An A/C compressor with stuffed seals will still work pretty well for pumping air. Gotta keep it lubed, and run metal plumbing outta the comp, it will comeout fairly hot and rubber hoses will melt pretty quick.

How would you keep an A/C compressor lubed? don't you need an inline oiler? what's involved in making such things? I'll follw the other links later, don't have time now.

In Aus 4Wd monthly, there's an ad for "endless Air" same sort of thing $350

the endless air sounds good  , but thats just the compressor itself  ...add to that the mounting brackets :( (if it would even be able to fit in a jeep) graemlins/crying.gif ,labour to cover warranty graemlins/headspin.gif ,hoses ,fittings etc and you are already over double the list price graemlins/crazy.gif ...

If you phone a few wreckers you'll quickly find a good quality york at a fair price....as I said I found 'em for $50....

The Yorks are the one to go for because they are self oiling.

I've seen a few ppl drill and tap a grease nipple into the housing of SANDEN style compressors. I don't see how it could be hard to rig up. I'm looking into this soon as a new project. Will keep you informed!
