View Full Version : heard on the grapevine....
Had a good chat to Paul Vanderhorst at Wandin on Sunday - he really is a top bloke to talk to.
He was saying that GQ upper control arms are the exact length for Wrangler front and back, also that he has heard that Ford Explorer disc brakes fit straight on to rear Wrangler - anyone done the same?

But do you really want Nissan parts on your Jeep? Are the arms on a GQ adjustable?

Interesting....
Explorer discs would fit - but not any easier than the falcon's - which would be easier (read cheaper) to source.
As for the GQ uppers - same length as what the TJ uppers or lowers? what benefit??
Steve you checked out the Nippon denso (sound so american  ) alternator on your jeep

That is interesting about the GQ arms, I didn't know that. I wonder though would there be a cost saving and benefit? The fabrication required to mount them may, (and I say this with respect because I have not personally swapped in GQ arms) may not be worth the trouble.
Did you know however, that ZJ arms are actually a little longer than TJ arms, and will fit up to the factory TJ mounting points without modification? This lets you stretch that little TJ wheelbase a tad without major fabrication and guard cutting.
As for the Explorer brakes; did you mean the rotors, calipers and pads as a direct bolt on to the rear TJ axle tubes, at the tube flanges? This is also interesting and I am sure TJers will be interested in that for sure. However, there will still be fabrication but I have no hands on with an Explorer swap in so I will glady listen.
I do have experience first hand on the front the TJ DANA 30 tubes however. On my first TJ I converted these to Warn outer axles and FWH's (off the shelf from Warn in those days) and swapped in local Ford rotors which I had to machine down 250 thou. The rotors were cheap by comparison to anything I could have imported at the time.
It is great to hear some different approaches to parts swapping on local TJ's and ZJ's but geez bloke, don't let any of my Rice Boy mates know I was talking about saki bits for a Jeep. ;)
All the best bloke.
Thanks for the feedback TJPete - according to Paul, the control arms bolt straight in.
He didn't know anyone who had done the Explorer brake conbversion, but did know someone who was going to give it a go. From what I gathered, the brakes bolt up at the flanges, although I could be wrong.........

I would have thought that the GQ arms would be a little to stiff for the lighter TJ and probably hinder flex. Just guessing as I haven't seen them.

Pete, do you know how much longer ZJ control arms are? Sounds like a good idea for those going for >3" lift.
the REAR ZJ arms are about 25mm longer, the fronts are all the same as TJ/XJ etc. its a bit much for a 3" kit really, it will give you a mammoth caster angle and low pinion plus there no cheaper than TJ arms.
someone needs to measure the nissan arm, 400 C to C is a stock arm, for 3" anoher 10 to 15mm is nice, over that can cause other issues.

GQ are 410mm....but I really cant see what the big benefit is....cheap arms for a lift...maybe...

I like this idea - extra 10mm sounds good and shouldn't be hard to get second hand ones. Maybe I will look at taller coils now.....
