Steve

I thought CSC looked after all the IT for where you worked.. (Im guessing where you work!).. or is that just in the US they do?

Dave Netware Rocks as far as I'm concerned. Have a NW 4.11 Server that we haven't rebooted in nearly 3 years mate! Only getting rid of our NW servers under sufferance! No Dave me and few other blokes look after all our IT work!

Zach do you reckon that your industry will ever become pro-active rather than re-active? Not having a go at you or anything. But that's what it's gonna take. I guess as soon as MS stops Beta testing their OS's by releasing them to the public to troubleshoot you might be out of a job. But I can't see that happening!

just got a CS degree and looking for an IT job but they all require this thing called EXPERIENCE............ bugger

TJB
22-03-2004, 12:37 PM
Yeah, that's the thing. A few years ago you only needed 2-3yrs experience to land a "good" job. Now since the market has gotten so tight in many areas, I've seen employers asking for 10-15yrs experience. Depending on what IT you do, it tends to make it very hard to get into and to move around...

Sucks to that... bring back the good old days! :)

Deane

Tell me about it, I send out about 20 resumes a week but employers can get someone with a degree and a few years experience very easily.

Or maybe I am just looking in the wrong places...

How did you guys start in the industry????

DIRK

Yeah, I'm in IT. In fact, no matter what I do I'm always in IT. IT's just the depth that varies.

How did you guys start in the industry????

I was obscenely lucky… :)

Dunno how it works these days, but have you tried putting your name down with a few IT agencies…? I've heard they have jobs on their books that you'd never hear about via normal means...
Just a thought...??

Dave

I was lucky too and got a job as the good ol days where ending :).. In fact I got to choose between two I got offered in the one day and took the one I am in now. Im with TJB, send your resume to the recruitment agencies and hopefully they will find something for you.

Take anything you can get, even if it is a 2-3month rollout. Any charities / schools need IT help? It could be the difference between you and the 100's of other IT graduates out there at the moment.

I got my first IT job after doing work experience and then being offered a job, after 6 months there I got my current job and tripled my pay.. (not that it was much to begin with)..

Where are you located? What kind of IT work are you after.. I work for a pretty big IT outsourcing company I could have a look in the Intranet and see whats out there..

Based in sydney although I would not mind a job in newcastle or on the central coast, I dont mind what I do but would like to get into security or networks.

All of the recruitment agencies to date have told me they do very minimal graduate work because no one wants to pay them for a graduate.

Deane,

Try and get your hands on a Commonwealth Gazette. They list every job in the Public service Australia wide. Now granted the PS isn't the highest paying job in the world, but the Public Service often has many many entry level positions available. Great place to get experience and the training is good! When I moved to Oz 10 years ago that's how I got my start, and as a matter of fact I'm still with the Commonwealth.

At the moment I'm an IT/Development manager in a Unix (Solaris/Linux) eCommerce/Graphics/Publishing environment.

My history started as a CE for IBM back in 1980 and progressed through all sorts of hardware-related CE jobs for 10 years. I then became interested in Pick/Universe database support and design. This led to about 5 years in the Credit Union sector who at that time all relied on the Pick OS.

In about 1992 I started with a new company (Quickcut) designing publishing distribution networks and tools - culminating in a product for Quickcut called QuickPrint/PageStore which has now gone multi-national.

I now operate the development arm of a small web-based company designing ecommerce-based version of PageStore called DigitalAds.

I really want to mow lawns too ;)

Ditto I have a degree in Year 12! Hands on means more than paper, to me anyways!

ACJ7,
Have a mate in the US that sells the US based IT Giant stuff you mentioned. Sold so much of it 2 years ago that he got a free set of Calloway Golf Clubs from them. Including the $700 bag to go with the clubs! Granted his contract was with the US Navy.
