OK.

Went to our new property this weekend. 380km bitumen followed by 15km dirt road - and back. BIG grinding noise again, didn't stop us driving, but hellishly loud.

22,000km on the clock.

Done last week: Front diff replaced.

Done last week: Rear diff replaced.

NOW

Front right CV has gone.

Back to the shop she goes.

This will make it around 9 days in the shop this month..... not bad huh?

I feel like a Lamborghini driver now..... more shop than road use.

I'm now getting the feeling that the guys at the dealership are embarrassed. I also get the feeling that they think I'm abusing the car.

I'm not.

Sydney Jeep Club guys that have been along on trips with Jenny and myself will attest to the fact that I'll go around obstacles that are beyond the Grand's current capabilities. I'm not one to belt the car, and i certainly look after it because I paid so damn much for a new car that just isn't suited to the real hard work yet.... if it ever is. I bought it for distance touring, and am even tossing up whether or not I need it lifted any more at all. It's already high enough to tackle nearly everything you'll come across on the Gunbarrel, Stezlecki or any other long trip.

I'm rapidly losing faith here....

Sorry for my moaning, but this is really starting to give me the irrits big time.

Welcome to owning a jeep.

Have a feeling my CV's a roooted too.

All things aside, how was the trip, sounded very pieceful when you guy's called  . Nice way to rub it in :-x >:)

Maybe the earlyer prob is a factor and has helped the cv go or they screwed it when they done the diff
I hope this is the last of your problems
you know what they say Just Expect Every Problem

ACJ...
why woudl you think that?
if they were remving the axle from the diff housing, in theory the CV stub & shaft are connected when you pull apart ya diff... i cant see how they can screwed it up, unless you are thinking different to me...
not saying you're wrong, just wondering, you do know lotsa things that i dont know...

Mate they got to prove that you abuse your Jeep. Its good they are feeling embarrassed, it may move then to get it sorted for you. Hey it would be funny if they replaced it with a new one. Keep making noise.

UPDATE:

The steering has serious problems. It doesn't return to center as the damper was probably damaged upon mis-aligned re-installation during the last front diff fix. It wanders all over the road to the extent that it is unsafe. You turn a corner and let go of the wheel, and it continues to turn. The damper was found to have no oil in it. A new one is on order.

The front right CV looks stuffed. Still to remove and inspect fully.

The front diff (that was extensively re-worked last week) also has problems again. The terrible grinding noise sounds possibly like a careless job at the diff repair place (but I'm not saying that...).

A few more days yet in the kennel for the Grand. Meanwhile, they gave me a 5-litre Holden ute to drive around in. Nice fuel bill ;)

Sheesh!

Billsta it just seems funny that the cv was fine until they pulled it apart and now its not :| Also it dosen't seem to handle properly after the job was done not a good sign that the workshop has done a good job :|
but don't mind me im just thinking allowed

I'll ask Billsta.......

Allan (ACJ) came up with a great idea for me. I'll ask the question tomorrow if they will consider replacing the entire front diff centre with an ARB locker, and I'll pay the difference....if any. A new genuine Jeep centre has to worth a fair whack... even to the dealer.

I'm hopin'

Righto .... I got it back this morning.

New front crown & pinion. 8 days in the shop. that's 15 days in the shop this month.

I'm driving it like it's going to break again. I'm going to do a few hundred kays at varying sppeds, just like the run-in period suggests....

Billsta - Can't get the original parts back mate. They have to go to D/C's tech division so that they can see what went so wrong. I saw them in a box, and they looked OK to me at first visual inspection. No scoring to speak of, but the surface of the teeth was still dull, like they hadn't been lapped in yet.

Lets see.....

you do need to "run in" new R&P anyway.. (if they are new ones that they installed)

not to worry about the parts...
always good to hope...

better luck this time eh..

I would'nt be too worried Chris, I mean it'll take you 3 years to get to 20,000k won't it  8)

Anyway I've got abt 17.5k up and no noises (yet).

Here's hoping things go well for you from here on in Chris.

I broke 6,000k yesterday...

I hate that damn instrument..... the odometer.

I used look at the numbers and see them as the number of dollars I'm losing on the trade-in. The more you do... the less its worth.

These days I see them differently. I have a diesel, so it should go forever. I just see the odo numbers now as a figure of the number of "fun" kilometres we've travelled.

Yeah i know what you mean. Something that was a concern to me with the amount i do but then i looked at it from a different perspective. I won't keep the car beyone 100K and if i have to cop a 5-10K loss in difference between payout and trade in then so be it. I saved 14K by buying a demo at the time (no luxo tax, onroad costs, depreciation etc).

Also if i have to cop a loss then so be it, i will piss more money up against a wall through the course of vehicle ownership and have a good time doing it. I have a good time in the Jeep so kinda the same logic applies in my (wierd) way of thinking :?

does the apparent "locking" mean your diff was stuffed from the outset?
