Bouncing speedo - help needed.

Hi Guys.

Trying to track down a problem with the speedo in the CJ10. The speedo had a small needle bounce from when I purchased it. Cable broke and I re-welded it nice and firm. No binding in the outer case AFAIK.
Changed speedo gear last night and it now "bounces" over 20km/ph range until it gets to over 60 kmph and then settles down - steady needle - and then starts again when I slow down.

Anyone had a similar thing happen? Like to fix this if possible....

I think mine is one of the few CJ ones I have seen that stays steady If everything is tight in the cable and not binding then it could be the dampner in the speedo they have little springs that apply the right amount of resistance to stop then from swinging wildy over bumps etc If you know a watch maker or someone from the aeronautical trades they should be able to help you find someone who can look at it if not maybe time for a new speedo cluster

Dont forget to check the speedo gears are seated right and no play in them

Mine does this as well! But not so bad :? But It does not worry me to much :wink:

Yep Aussie - had that thought about gear seating as well but I'm confident thats not the problem after changing the gear.
Springs in the back of the speedo itself? Might give that a look-see. Always wondered if my Jeep was clockwork powered. :mrgreen:

It's a bit annoying when you need to drive at 50kmph and the needle swings between 40 and 60. Just pick the middle ground.... :cry:

just be very careful they are fine fidley little bastards one wrong move with teh plyers and they can get damaged


I have never had a jeep one apart but seen others apart and they are very fiddley

I had a similar problem on one of my Chero's.
Turned out that the square edges od the speedo cable, where it enters the back of the speedo, had rounded and was causing it to slip. I ended up replacing the cable and it was good as new.

those speedo heads have a rotating bar magnet that spins from the rotating cable, the gauge needle is connected to a wire loop that the magnetic field "grabs" in pulses and as it runs faster it drags the needle further around and if the needle pivot is happy it smoothes out the pulses to offr a steady gauge, if you pull those speedo heads apart and clean the dusty crust from that mechanism and lube it up making sure its free to float nicely and rebuild it you will get it better, you'll never eliminate it completly espessially @ low speeds, thats how those CJ and FSJ speedos work. I've got a few old heads here if yours seems to not respod to that ross.

How different is that to the TJ speedos?
I noticed yesterday that my Speedo needle is enjoying the inflated castle.....

ones a cable and a magnetic coiled needle, the other is fully electronic, I havent had a TJ spedo head apart, I'd assume it was lot different in its operation though wooders. if your getting odd readings pull speedo gear an inspect it, they can chew the tops of the teeth off from not beingset up dead rite, you have to dial the speedo transducer in to contact the oupt put shaft. and on some SYE kits havea plastic spiral gear on the o/p shaft that can let go too, they chop out basically. you can see and feel it thru the hole.

Only started yesterday :-x At about 110-120 km/h it would suddenly gain/lose 10km/h if I moved my throttle position :? Not to worry guess I'll leave it for the time being - I'll probably have the darn t/case appart again soon :oops:

mine was just doing that a little while back, i bought a new cable from Jeep City in Rainbow beach somewhere in QLD and it fixed it quick smart, its Purrfect now.

Mine had a small kink in it on the transfer case end, and on the other end the square bit became rounded and was spinning around a bit not quite grasping.. but a new cable which cost me $81 delivered from QLD fixed it.
