This is sort of on topic... you need maps to get to the spots to drive, right?
I use oziexplorer, and have all of australia in 1:250k on CD (the auslig series) which interfaces more or less directly. That means I can drive anywhere in the country and have a moving map on my laptop at that scale - and I've done it a lot. It's good, but I want a better scale.
I also have in PDF format, the entire state of vic, in 1:25k and in 1:50k. (Vicmap, created for fire management purposes, not commercially available that I know of) Much better scale. Problem is, oziexplorer don't work with PDF, and the conversion is difficult, as far as I can tell. So I have to look at them with acrobat, which is worse than having them on paper!
Anyone know how I can turn a PDF into... a JPG, for example?
Anyone run a different mapping software which will use PDF maps?

Don't know what froop told you in his PM, but it is possible.
Have a look at the Oziexplorer group on Yahoo and do a search, it has come up a number of times...

The 250k Auslig has many tracks... but the 25k Vicmap has 'em all.
(as many as you're gonna get unless you get a map hand made, like the Adventurer series - the best 4WD maps around for the hills in Vic - but not complete coverage.)

where did you get the maps and how do i get a copy :)
to convert pdf to jpg there are a few utilities that will do it. Eprint is one. You can find it @ http://www.eprintdriver.com/to_jpeg/PDF-to-JPEG-ex.html

Without giving too much away here, try playing around with this link for some raster maps:
www . street-directory . com . au/aus_new/genmap.cgi?sizex=1000&sizey=1000&x=144.9764330000&y=-37.8097570000&level=3&star=0&circle=1&xyfile=
(URL bastardised so ausjeep does get into street-directory's log file as being a refer
A 4500x2500 map at zoom level 6 is just the right size for a double Melways page, with a bit of overlap. Bring the zoom out to 4, and the Vic major roads fit onto four images. splice them together and put the four corners into OziExplorer, and voila!
These maps tend to be good for touring, but rather lacking in detail for offroading, in which case if you look hard enough, there are maps out there, like the CFA 1:25k ones

For the maps, I like the NASA's Landsate 7's Y2K picutures better, MrSid format, support OziExplorer, free to download from the Internet, bigger scale than 250K (about 150K I reckon)
File size is a bit big though, about 200MB each, 33-34 pictures to cover whole AUS, so around 7G in total

Not bad. Not as much usable detail as 250k Auslig maps, but they do look pretty cool.

Yep. I use them for kicks on oziexplorer. Not a lot of good for navigation purposes, but they look nice.
