Does anyone run one of these? Are there any tricks to using them? How long do they run on a tank and how hot do they get?

Cheers

I have been using the standard size 2 burner duel fuel for a few years now, it takes a minute or so to get the flame just right before cooking, there are a few little balences and checks you need to go through, (these are included in the operating manual and on the lid) but for the convience of not having to carry a large gas bottle around it is well and truely worth it. Square coleman fuel carrier is eassier to pack.

It heats as well if not better than any gas stove I have used and runs for well over an hour before requiring refuelling, manufactorer says 2+ hours. I have used both unleaded and shellite, preferring the shellite (coleman fuel) as it is a cleaner burning.

I would also recommend using the coleman griddle with it as it is slightly larger than some of the other plates and covers both burners well, giving a more even heat.

We have the three, two and single burner models. They are all our "friends", and would never part with any of them. My fave is the two-burner as the generator only has to supply the two burners, whereas the three burner tends to lose a bit of heat on the two outside burners. The single burner is a little ripper too. Great to throw into our drawers and pull out for a billy on the run. They have all been ultra-reliable - and that's because we look after them and replace generators at least one a year. Pressurising them is easy - you remove the tank and pump it up for about 40 pumps - takes a few seconds. Re-mount it to light and then pump a few times every 5 minutes or so to keep the pressure up.

We also have the dual-fuel Northstar lantern - which is the brightest lantern we have ever had. It's also ultra-reliable and has never flamed up or let us down in any way. The mantles last forever too. We've had ours for over four years now, and we're still on our first packet of mantles.

Now that we run diesel it's not so easy as we had it before. In the Patrol we used to just syphon off a litre or two of unleaded in an emergency. We normally ran Coleman fuel or Shellite which does run cleaner as stated above. I'd much rather take a can of Shellite with me (stored in an MSR 1-litre hiking canister) than an LPG tank any day.

All good food for thought. I'm keen to remove the LPG tanks from the gear so they sound ideal. Cheers!

I have a 2 burner, which I swear by. Never go back to gas. Can't do a 3 week trip on a gas bottle...

It's hot as all hell, efficient on fuel, you can run it on petrol if you want to (shellite is better, or try a tank of shellite every second fill to keep it cleaned out), easy to light, runs in sub-zero temperatures (I tested it at -8 and it worked ok, just took longer to run up ready for cooking).

Can't beat em I say. Most people I go away with who see them running change over. Dad got a big 3 burner when he saw mine going. Other mates have picked up 2 burner standard and 2-burner-compact like mine.

But unless you're base-camping, forget the dual fuel light, I reckon. I have one which I hardly use. I don't base camp enough these days. Just get a versa light and a little 12v gel cell lead acid 7AH to run it. It only uses about 1A.

I have been useing one for years with no troubles. If you get 1 it is a good idea to buy a spare generator tube for it and carry it with it as these can play up with little notice. But i'm still on my orriginal 1.

I use a Coleman Feather dual fuel stove. easy to use and heaps better than using gas bottles etc. dual fuel means shellite (coleman fuel) or petrol. a 1 liter bottle lasts ages.
have also just bought an Optimus hiker stove. this is indestructible and compact. folds up in a metal container. runs on anything. petrol, diesel, shellite, kero. apparently they use them in the antartic. bit pricey but has been a good investment for me
