I thought I'd ask on here so people that don't mind answering can do so.. I know how much IT people hate people putting them in a corner with their crappy questions :D

I've recently moved to China and as I knew from my last trip unless your tastes in music are 4 year old backstreet boys or aqua albums your choice is somewhat limited. Being in Australia/China also means getting an account with itunes is out of the question as far as I understand.

My brother/friends back home are happy to buy cds that I want but what I want to know is what's the best way to get the music onto my computer. Ripping to mp3 etc is no problem, but how do I go about getting it? Obviously sending it in an email is not the way to do it.

I realise it might sound stupid asking how to get music when it's so dam easy to download for free, but a. I often can't find what I want to download/buy and b. I've always find I spend more time trying to download the proper file (fake files, radio editions, shorter tracks etc) that I'd rather just buy it.

Help appreciated, and plenty of beers offered in return if you're willing to come over here to get them :D

One of a few ways.

You can use one of the standard chat programs; MSN messenger, Yahoo messenger, etc. They have a file transfer capability. But you'd both have to be online at once, and send the files one at a time.

You could use something like yahoo briefcase, which allows online storage of about 30MB, which you can then access from elsewhere. You just need a yahoo email address set up to use it. The files can be accessible to selected users, or anyone, or just you. You get an address like http://au.briefcase.yahoo.com/thetsf.

You could run your own webserver, if you have a bit of computer knowledge, or know someone who can set it up for you. I run my home computer at http://thetsf.org.au:81/ for example.

Or just post the damn CD.

Try using DC++, eMule, eDonkey or Limewire, use any of these applications to download the music you want directly from the Internet. search them in Google you will find sites to download, for mp3s I will recommend Limewire.

That would be illegal.
We can't have illegal suggestions on the board...

My suggested methods were illegal too, but breach fewer copyright owners' rights.

Try "dropload", it's pretty cool, I use to use it for sending promo mixes from DJ's I represented to promoters all over the world without a drama.

http://dropload.com/

From the site:

Dropload is a place for you to drop your files off and have them picked up by someone else at a later time. Recipients you specify are sent an email with instructions on how to download the file. Files are removed from the system after 7 days, regardless if they have been picked up or not. You can upload any type of file, mp3, movies, docs, pdfs, up to 100MB each! Recipients can be anyone with an email address

Cheers,

Thad
