I kinda thought it might be something to do with interior vision..
although I didnt know why that particular colour..I thought maybe he had picked up too many junky hitchhikers in his time..

well look at it this way, if you had a red light in the cockpit, think how angry and hot you would feel. Blue....... hmmm calming.

actually there is far more science behind it, not sure that was the reason behind his choice but is the reason for a lot of cars now going red/orange or blues

Night vision is controled by the rods in your eyes. These rods are optimised around the purple frequency of the light spectrum. Giving Red blue and green as acceptable ranges either side White light will react and close these rods killing your night vison

If you rub your eyes hard and you see a black/purlple almost cork board effect that the rods your seeing

sitting behind lights will not impact your night vision as much as looking straight at it (still reduces it)

This is the real reason your will see defence forces use red filters on their torches and most miltary equpment is red back lite

given the intesity of the lights in that pic I would say it is all bling but there is a still the science behind the choice by auto manufactures in modern cars

Hmm so if I was to change my interior lights to red it would make night driving a little easier on the eyes?
but prolly look like a total tool.

No, it's all very true - but I don't think blue is the best colour. To retain night vision you need red light as it is the lowest frequency in the visible spectrum and has least effect on your eyes. When on board ship at night all cabin lights in the bridge / nav areas will be red so that night vision is no so baddly affected. That is also why you can sneak up on a lot of animals in the dark using a red torch, as many animals see using the higher blue/violet end of the spectrum. People like National Geographic used to use red light for night filming.

(Gordo - please do not do anything evil with this information).
