View Full Version : Plasma TV Pros and Cons Steve 24-06-2005, 12:35 PM Anyone have real world experience with Plasma TV's? I went to buy a new 100Hz 76cm Widescreen the other day and got to looking at a 106cm Plasma TV. Man they look nice. Does anyone know the pros and cons of them? Dead Pixels, Life Span etc etc.... Jeff 24-06-2005, 01:04 PM Life span, not really an issue nowadays. Dead pixels are pretty rare too. The biggest issues are around picture quality. It's hard for plasma's to show black, so you often get a lot of grey instead of black. If you're going to have a decent look at one, make sure you see a demo of a fairly dark movie. When I used to sell plasmas I always tested with the brightest demo I could find. btw they heat up a fair bit, and use 500w or so of power. Make sure it's well ventilated, or it'll die. High def v standard definition: If you can get a good digital TV signal, you might want to make sure the plasma has 1024x1024 or higher res. Then buy yourself a Hi def digital Tv box, and it'll look a hell of a lot nicer. They're getting pretty cheap in the 42" size. Standard TVs really dont look good above 76cm, so it's the best option for a 90cm screen. Hope this helps mate. Steve 24-06-2005, 02:14 PM Thanks Jeff. Good tip on the black! Cpage66 26-06-2005, 03:04 PM I used to repair and test them and while they are getting cheaper, save your dough on the plasma and save up for an LCD. Plasma, while improving, still fail at a high rate and still drop pixels regularly. (But like Jeff says, they aren't as bad as even a couple of years ago). Go the LCD... The new Sharps are doing really well on the refresh...I've even gamed on the new ones and the blur is gone...And we're talking Halo 2 and such and it looks awesome. Barefoot 26-06-2005, 04:10 PM LCD's are cheap as for smaller screens that you would use with a PC,say 17/19" but are still a fair bit more for larger screens (loungeroom tv size).They are gradually dropping in price though as larger LCD's become more common.
