Just wanted to put a thread up to see what broadband ISPs you guys are using and how you are finding it ie. Speed/Service/Price

I haven't looked around lately as i have been on an Optus Cable plan since day 1 they released it which was... True Unlimited downloads up until next month. They have cancelled my plan and are only offering me with 12gb so i am looking at changing.

Due to my contract I can't say much (whispering... come closer...shhhs! ) "We are all getting JaCkED."

Optus could be run out of a Garage and Telstra will tell you whatever takes you away from other ISP's...

The Customer Service you get in Telecommunications Industry here is really a joke! The left hand has no idea what the fnkinu fingers are doing... :hammer:

all ************ cept for the node. Our work use em for out of hours support and execs net connections.

Have installed and supported plenty of different ones over the years.

Worst - dodo (surprise ! laughable support - rang back the day after for a problem)
Best - Internode

The node dont have the cheapest price (noe the most exxy) but support and quality of service is EXCELLENT and I have NEVER experienced an outage. Hard to believe but true !

They keep upgrading their service (eg more download) for no more $$ - which is cool.

they also have a shyteload of gaming servers with free stats.

btw - I have no affiliation with the node - just promoting a top service !

thanks for feedback guys, i am looking at making the move to ADSL from cable even though its kinda backwards but i have seen various plan stating to be "true" unlimited for under 100 bucks a months. Only thing that worrys me is there bullshit acceptable use policys....

I use Iinet for work, and they've been faultless in everyway. Definitely recommend them.

Just wish someone would come up with pre-paid ADSL. Only use the net on the odd occasion at home (why waste free time when I can surf for free at work!)...but I HATE dial-up speed at home, and I've love ADSL at least, just can't justify $30 a month for it.

After two years of Big Pond's poor service......(shouldn't be surprised, it's the same as Telstra's service)......I've gone to Westnet. My 1.5g is noticable faster than the 512 I was using previously, and it's cheaper. The few contacts I've had so far have been friendly & professional......unlike my previous ISP.

I second, Internode, very reliable, great customer service, no dramas. Been with them 2yrs and no intention of changing. Check whirlpool.

I've been with westnet for just about a year and have found them very good.
I have the 512,256 15gig plan.

I'm with Arachnet (WA Dial up) but for tha fact that somehow telstra screws up the connections for them in the eastern states, I'd stay Dial up. I'm looking to Change to one of these wireless broadband companys (Iburst or UnWired and so on) but the're not in the west yet. but then neither am I (ask me where i'll be in 2 months  )

Just trying to decide where to go.... I have been with Optusnet for about 3 years now and I am absolutely fedup with it......THE most inefficient company I have EVER dealt with bar NONE.

So I'm looking for cable speed, 12-20Gig download (based on current demand), Preferably some sort of webhosting, and webmail service (I don't want to use Yahoo etc - too many adds & crap). I;m currently paying about $70/month so anything less than that is a bargin.....

So suggestions?? (ok I haven't followed the link above yet but it's my next stop ;)).

Go get some VOIP action and make 2 hour phone calls to the US for $2.50 and 17c phone calls anywhere in Aus !! just as examples...

Just installed my second adsl2+ router (voip, 802.11g wireless, etc). 1st one was an ebay beige yumcha that bit the dust after 6 months.

New one is a Billion 7401vgp $169.00+ p&h from warcom in Vic. Arrived two days after.

They have ADSL deals too if oyu need connection - get new ADSL service (internode, iinet, etc) and a bundled 7401VGP router for only $150 extra. Kickass !

checkout the whirlpool aussie dsl forums for plenty of info.

Mines through OzEmail, which is owned by Iinet. I need it for mission critical support for my employer and Ozemail/Iinet have been great resolving the couple of problems I've had over the years at any time during the night.

I have TPG, in 24months only had about 6hrs of outage, so I'm happy with them and would recommend.

They do take their pretty time for the initial setup, but have had nothing but good support.

Wish I could get their ADSL2 plan, stuck on ADSL1 cause of Darwin :-(

A vote for TPG, support is not great, but have only needed it once when first setting up. Great speed no outages.

Stay as far away from WildIT as you can. Their MD, Tim B :hammer: , is the biggest prat I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with.

Jeff

Got TPG ADSL2, speed is good, outages rare, price is good.

but.... Customer Service sucks ass, their billing system is questionable and they seem to have a 5 second memory when it comes to changing any details on your account.

The problem with optus cable is that it is not point to point. You connect to a network segment (in your suburb) that connects back to the optus core, so each segment of the network has a choke point. With cable being as fast as it is, when the kiddies come home from school or on weekends, the amount of traffic they download (music and warez) slows your local segment down. With ADSL this problem is avoided because it is point to point, when the connection is established it is straight into the providers network without the choke points.

1.5m is the best you will get with internode but that is still 150 - 160kbps which will be fine. If you are happy with that limited speed, until they get around to your exchange then the HOME-1500-Value plan @ $69.95 with 20gb is just the ticket for you.

PM me your landline number and i will look into the best connectivity options for you.

Ordered TPG ADSL/2 today.

Speed - 24mb/s down, 1mb up
30gb data limit, throttled down to 128/128k if you go over
$60 per month :)

Which is fine if you NEVER require technical support. I wish you all the best if you ever do, i would put TPG on the same list as OPTUS and Westnet.

oh and adsl2+ is no where near 24mbps unless you live next door to the exchange. I look after about 15 adsl2+ connections all over sydney and the fastest of them gets 11mbps.

900m via streets, or about 750m as the crow flies.

That is supposed to be good for 21mb according to the estimates :D

Also got TPG ADSL2, support is carp but then I know what I'm doing so dont really care. I get about 8mbps as I'm a loooong way from the exchange (two suburbs) but then it was a free upgrade from ADSL. I pay $49.95 for 18GB a month and then capped at 128/128. Fine for getting my email and surfing forums.

Another vote for Iinet, I've used them for work for years and they've been brilliant, recently signed up for phone/net bundle at home.

Great service when need it (which is very rare).

We use Westnet at work, and I have found their support to be brilliant. We had a few switch over teething problems, they answered the phones relatively quickly and rang me back when the problem was fixed, even if that meant ringing my mobile after I have left the office. No outage ever in the 22 months since.

We are on a business grade service, but a mate's business is with them just using a standard grade and he reports similar service quality.

Would be great if I could get ADSL. Currently investigating Wireless (Telstra NextG or Cirrus) or Satellite. Not really happy having to go either way but no other choice unfortunately.
Used to be with NetSpace in previous house and happy with connection and service. Both excellent.

Love the ADSL2. I'm working from home today via VPN to the office. I forgot to grab some software so just installed it straight from one of our servers, not really much slower than being onthe LAN :)

Well i been with telstra for about 8 months and i was VERY suprised with their service, they have been great as far as im concerned and even when it looked like i had too move to somewhere that didn't have DSL the supervisor i talked too said he would suspend my plan till i got back too somewhere with DSL available at no charge and no monthly charge and i only pay $29 a month for 256/64k connection unlimited (well basically, shaped at 20GB)

Now beyond pissed off - all night wasted on bloody Optus......:toilet:

Taken me about 30 minutes to get to this page and it's still not loaded... and an entire night od lost messages and drop outs.....

I WILL be getting a new ISP tomorrow.....but I specifically want one that will support a hub as optus constantly wash their hands as soon as they detect we are running 2 machines on the one connection......

So is iinet still good if you run a hub?

I have three machines running of my broadband connection, in fact there is no limit, I have a modem/router/switch with 5 wired ports and wireless, all supported from the ISP (TPG). Right now I'm on the laptop via wireless in the lounge room, the desktop is downloading a 3gb torrent over it's wireless connection upstairs and my PDA is sitting there connected to the wireless as well occasionally syncing my email via a VPN connection to work :) I don't notice any difference in speed with the ADSL2 regardless of number of machines and it costs me $49.95 a month for 18GB.

I run 2 machines through the standard modem I got with iinet. One through the USB port and one through the standard network connection. Last time I reported a problem (which turned out to be a problem with Telstra) the guy said this was fine to do and fully supported.

Is it the internet connection that isn't working or is it saying the network cable is unplugged? If it's the internet connection that isn't working go to control panel > network connections, select the connection that the xbox is plugged into (or is it the one connected to the modem, not sure now it's late) and then go to properties, under advanced tick the box to allow other users to connect to the internet connection.

If it isn't detecting the network connection it could be a firewall issue, hard to tell really, hopefully someone who has an xbox and has done it can help :)

Theres some good deals on adsl2 out now, i have stayed with adsl1 as it now go's up to 9mbs which seems to be plenty even on torrents, which i dont use of course;).
Have been with westnet for a while know and can not fault the product and the technical support is great.
They are a little on the higher end of the price range but worth it!
Check this site out as it gives you idea of whats out there, make sure when you find a plan you like the you check the comments linked to that company.

We recently went with ADSL2 with iinet - bought their wireless router and was up and running in 5 min, very happy.

I've also bundled their VOIP phone services with this and I'm shocked at how much we're saving on calls, its very worthwhile looking into.
