Intro

I thought a thread was needed in the fab section for those that have started/finished their trek down the road to Jeep I6 Stroker Nirvana.

I've just taken a few baby steps but thought I would share with others who are keen to follow the path to stroker enlightenment also.

The desire for a stroker was to get some more HP out of the 4.0L and a LOT more torque whilst not requiring any engineering or and running on ULP fuel. The should aid short sprints in winch comps and the extra torque will make general offroad crawling easier.

Risks involved are the increased grunt will chew through drivetrain components more easily and will make fuel economy an even DIRTIER word under heavy right foot. For normal onroad driving without extra right boot economy is expected (hoped) to be same or better than stock.

Rear wheel Dyno figures will be obtained before and after the stroker is installed.

Only current engine mods are 2.5" exhaust + extractors, TB spacer, Reusuable Pod filter on snorkel.

Project budget : $2500

*plenty* of labour costs will be saved by using forced labour (conned mates lured by the promise of free beer and pizza) to remove motor, tear down, port block, install engine internals, reassemble and reinstall motor in the Jeep.

Parts to get

6x Ross forged custom pistons and rings ( www.rosspistons.com, $1000) specs : rod length : 6.125, bore size : 3.935, stroke : 3.895, head cc : 56.7, block height : 9.453
http://www.angelfire.com/my/fan/677P_pistons.jpg

12x hydraulic tappets (ebay, $40)

1x kit engine bearings (source locally - cam, crank, etc - $40)

1x adjustable MAP sensor mod ($15 is parts as per gojeep's site)
http://go.jeep-xj.info/MAP%20024.jpg

1x 62mm bored stock Throttle body (TB). As per gojeep's site. Got the flap wheels just gotta get into it ! Will save $$ on a billet 68mm one.

Considerations

May require a custom ECU (eg Wolf 3D). No mention found during research as a requirment but may be desirable to get a happier running stroker motor. Hopefully the adjustable MAP sensor with be sufficient for the early stages.

May also require hi-vol oil pump if stock one can't cope. Should be ok as very little hi-rpm (+5500) work forseen. Same reason for reusing the stock valve springs and retainers.

Possibly get a baffle welded into stock sump to avoid lost HP from splash. May require larger vol sump if cooling bnecomes an issue.

Possible require bigger radiator if cooling still an issue (Aussie desert cooler 3 flow unit $400).

Will be hitting an old 265 and a 245 Valiant crank at home with the vernier soon to see if either can be used in leu of the 258 one. Long shot that it will fit but it would push capacity up somewhere near 5.0L. Compression may become too high >9.7:1 and would require a thicker head gasket and different pistons and would also be unchartered ground. Nothings impossible though ! But the end result must still run on ULP and be within the budget.

Pics to come as the work begins. (as well as ones pilfered from Dino and GoJeep's sites amongst others)

Gordo, I thought you allready picked my brain about my motor 6 mths ago. All work was done by local engineering shop (Cowie Engineering Performance)
258 crank
258 rods
oversize pistons to suit bored block
cam= 240 inlet/260 outlet
stock injectors, throttle body, exhaust and a crook o2 senser is why the dyno wasn't all to inspiring with 120bhp and 600ft torque.
Sorry no photo's or complete break down of what and how! I'm to busy organising my next bank job so I can pay for stage2, Injectors, throttle body, exhaust, o2 senser, supercharger (oops that's stage7).

MB, Hardly a full picking 6 mths ago..twas but a mere insignificant teasing of info I pryed out :) re: your new beast

Re: your specs - 120hp and 600ft of torque :o this *must* be a slip of the finger as I read this as 600lbft or 812nm - ******** ! Sounds more like a tug boat motor than a stroker ;)

Any hints from dyno man as to the low power ? How many kms on it now ?

*pad* nothing like a stroker thread to bring out the JEEP owners haha..

this thread is brilliant.. a break down of whats needed is all Ive ever wanted ..

I started a thread and asked the Q. about 600ft of toque, no slip of the finger but I sure as hell dont have 812nm.
Mr dyno man was impressed with the torque curve ( more of a flat line all the way to 4200rpm) when I asked how much torque all he said is "shit loads".
33" muddies and I can blow a VT commodore off up to 100klms, so I can't wait till stage two ( that is if I dont spin an axle or some thing)

Gordo have you checked out the abridged version on JU speed freaks ???

If the 4.0l oil pump is anything like the 258 one then go the mopar hi-vol straight away cheap insurance and without a real downside besides a few $$

awesome to hear gordo, great project!
how long is the sack going to be off the road?
i've been thinking twice about ever doing it myself after reading the recent dilemmas the 'rockskullz' dude has been having on the strokers yahoo group.
all the best to ya!

Davus, nice info - ta dude - any linky for him ?

Google reports (http://www.jeepconnection.com/parts/)
part # 4529241 4.0 6 cyl. Hi vol oil pump $69.95US -
pretty good. Meant to flow 25% more oil than stock 4.0L oil pump part no. 4529227

MB, curiouser and curiouser. Glad it's a torque monster....hp is for dyno poseurs at Summernats ;) Wonder what figure he quoted as 600lbft is 812nm :O

Hey TJ, cheers man. Was sick of just talking about it so decided to do it. Will prob do 1 more winch challenge next month then rip the Sack's heart out for the job. If I plan it right and have everything ready it'll only be sleeping about a month max.

Yeah saw Rockskullz dramas on yahoo but realistically stroker calculations should be pretty simple for any good engine builder to sort out BEFORE the build. IMHO it's not a black art like forced induction & not much removed just a standard rebuild/rebore. I suggested for him to get some LPG going to avoid stock carby pain offroad but LPG in cars doesn't seem as common in US as in Aus - could be wrong...just the feeling I got

Gonna get advice from a good mate who helped me do the Charger's 0.090" 265 donk build at home which went really well and also get the once-over before assembly by Graham Silk a top engine builder and stroker specialist down this way.

I 've been surprised how easy all the bits have been to source so far. Could imagine importing a 258 crank would be pretty exxy if u couldn't source one locally though.

My advice (for what it's worth) is start collecting the bits and prowling ebay regularily and then down the track the pricetag doesn't hurt so much and you also don't have a donkless Jeep sitting in your driveway waiting for that elusive/backordered part.

Hey Gordo....any progress on this project?

Gordo
03-09-2005, 10:32 PM
Nah dude - have been busy on some other "minor" life-altering stuff :o

Also got the rear diff to go back in next week (after getting the fresh gears installed)so I may even be able to make it into the swathe of comps coming up I've put my hand up for...

Cam and head gasket for Project GoatStroker haven't landed yet as they were sent turtle freight from US.

Time frame is to get the custom slugs ordered next month and after the last comp I'm keen for this year (two months away) the GoatHeart comes out for the evilness to begin.

Promise to blog all the gory details when it gets underway in earnest. Will see if the JAA boys need some space fillers for a few mags too...

Gordo,
as for your fuel injectors I have been told that magna injectors are some of the biggest you can get and that they will suit our motors. I'm not ready to go there yet but I thought I'd throw that at ya!

Cool MB,

Already got my 26 lb jobs for not too much 2nd hand so am right (including two spares!) but will help other Aussie stroker enthusiasts.

Any idea what model 4 cyl/v6 etc ? will try googling and see what I find. s'long as they're Bosch type 3 as per OEM they should be the go...

Ford 24lb for <4.7L projects seem to be the go too. They can be had on US ebay pretty readily for not much but a local alternative would be way cool.

No progress to report dude - too busy drinking and fattening myself over the hols to touch the goatsack. It sits despondantly in the driveway leaking fluids begging for attention but freshly gurnied and awaiting some flare reaffixing.

Hope yours is just the same "bearing mine" was..
