xj rock rails

am able to get some 50mm x 75mm box tube from work bout a 3mm wall thickness
was thinking of makin some rock rails out of it, guys at work think is way to heavy duty what do you all think. was only going to use it for the long rail (parallel to the sill)
probly 50mm x 50mm for the rails bak to the unibody maybe 4 per side.
does this sound over the top or wot?

That thickness is the lightest you will find and not over kill at all. I have seen 6 mm used with 5 the most common. You wont need 4 supports per side with 2 being the most common and using the pinch seem as a support as well. Grant on this forum has got a write up on making them some where using smaller main tube though and will chime in if he sees this post.

had planned on using the pinch seam/weld like u say, thought minimum of 3 supports as i would like to be able to use a highlift ofa them
the ones you were making jimmyB did they only bolt through one side of the "chassis rail"
why did u use the spring perch though that removing any strength from there wouldn't be such a good idea
was planning on bolting right through the "rail" and using plate on the other side, maybe even crush tubes through the rail also

Mounted them on the pich seam and also the chassis at the front and as mentioned the spring mount, mounting on the spring mount did nothing for removing strength, 8mm bolt going through, no big issues raised, and we had high lifted off them.

yeah have seen a few mounted this way and wasnt being criticle or anything
what sort of supports bolted to the chassis and spring mount tube or angle
were they bolted straight through the chassis and did u use crush tubes
