View Full Version : Rear carrier with dual Jerry Cans
I made this for a mate who took it across the Nulaboar and into Nt. Just after thoughts, suggestions etc.
Still a bit of refinement but it took the load well and held better than expected to the continues corragted roads.
Will be putting it into commercail fabrication with the week.

Love it! Wondering how much room obove the tow ball there? - but it looks a fairly large Tyre! Plastic Jerry's are the go! Metal ones keep splitting/ bending! Probably would not make any difference to the rack.
Potential price?

Yeah GC ! You're rite about the metal JerryCans..Shudder to think how many I have tossed out..Split where the indents join like a "V" at the sharp point..Rheem plastic ones I got in 1989 for our Cape York still work like new,all four of them..Expansion/Contraction kills metal ones (losing the juice hurts also)..Also note last time I checked only one brand of red colored plastic ones was certified to carry fuel INSIDE a lite plane..I understand no metal ones are legal..

Yuo guys at JBitz! Reckon I could do with a new RHS type rear bar with lugs etc(Not pretty.Jus stronng) and SATC as per your pix..The steel side steps/rails are great..Like the way you have "jigged" it all up so the bolts just slide in,no knock-ometer needed..Thanks..Jus keep inventin'..RockyOne

For the love of God - will someone just build one! Cheapest unit I have found for the XJ in the one from Formula Offroad - $1100 for a bar that does not include any other carriers other than the tyre, has no recovery points, no bumper, stuffs up your hard won departure angle and is the perfect height to belt your knee on! Yeah, like that's good value!
Make the bloody thing out of 150x100 RHS and weld a couple of fittings into it and you've got a built in air tank to! If anyone in Sydney is interested, I am trying to build this - but have come to the conclusion that I should stick to design and let someone else do the welding. Broke the handle on my chipping hammer when I threw it across the yard. The dogs ran and hid and the wife suddenly remembered that she had to go to see her Mum. I chain smoked a whole packet and my neibours wanted to complain about the language I was using - but weren't game to stick their heads over the fence. Bar is now sitting in the back corner of the yard, just under a large dent in the fence, slowly rusting. You guys that can just tack these things together are GODS!

I shall be exploring and playing around with ideas over the next couple of weeks, looking at different combinations, bar will be similar looking to what Jbitz made JimmyB but with Jerry can holder as well on drivers side spare on left side

Go for it Grant. Just be aware that any fabrication you make for the rear of the FamWag is subject to insurance.
If it fails or is involved in a prang then the bumper/carrier is subject to insurance scrutiny.
Not engineered? No specifactions on the carrier or swing away? No loading specs on the towbar?
Deep shite.....
Not a personel thing at all, believe me. Just a awareness post - thats all.
If you fabricate a "thing" for your vehicle, if it's not engineered then it's a liability for insurance. If you can't certify and plate the carrier/front bar/steps/rock rails/winch plate - and so on then you are on thin ice with insurance.
I draw an attention factor to all items that do not fall under current regs for fitment to vehicles.
It can cost you......

Thats is interesting OzJeeper. These things concern me more than other mods (for example lockers and gear ratios), since they are external bolt on things that are plain obvious to an assessor.
I must say however, when I listed my bullbar, snorkel etc, with Insurance co. they did not ask me to provide details about the manufacterer or eng certification with installment etc. In fact they they didnt attempt to make me aware of these issues. Im not sure if I should be alarmed by this or "forget about it" so to speak.
