Have been looking at CAI systems for a while now but I didnt really want a pod system that still sucks hot air in from under the bonnet plus I thought a snorkel was a better option. After a bit of procrastination I liked the idea of using the cold air vent to pump cold air into the air box. So here it is.
Made up the steel joiners using exhaust pipe and mig welded.
Bought some flexi hose from and auto shop and voila. One CAI system.
All I need now is a bonnet scoop to force cold air in at high speed.
Been running it for a week now, havent noticed any fuel improvement but have noticed an improvement in the high torque range. Lot more responsive at 80kph.

why don't you connect the cold air intake to the front? or connect it to a snorkel?
I'm doing the same mod. on my cj7 6cyl. fuel injected using a tj air box..

well I am not sure where I would have connected to the front, didnt seem like any room to me and certain not above bonnet height.

or connect it to a snorkel?

yeah, snorkel would have been ok. I like the look of a snorket but I weighed it against would I use snorkel - nope
and plus I have a custom mod for a light bar I am working on and that would have gotton in the way.

I have my bonnet scoop now

mm TJ's are allready interesting... in the rain with water making it's way into the cabin - how will you stop it form filling your airbox?

I dont know about other TJ's but my model you are able to put the hose directly over the air vent and no water gets inside the cab. The vent intake is raised above the base of the vent. Same as my CAI mod, the air intake is high and left of the vent intake. Also when I open my air box thier is a water hole at the bottom. Unless I plan on going duck diving with my Jeep no water is getting in.

I have one of those bonnet vent things.. works a treat for your airflow into your interior vents, blows the hair off your toes

Someone else who has done the same sort of thing, but they have removed the stock air box and placed a pod in the cowl there (apparently he has some pre filter or seomthing along those lines that stops the water from getting into the filter).....

well that is one tight fit. I have also seen a mod where the rectangle air filter was used in the cowl area.
If one is concered about water I would argue that placing the air filter/pod directly in the vent cowl is inviting water to be sucked in.
But if you never drive ya Jeep in the rain shouldnt be a problem :)

the amount of rain that gets in there.. even with a downpour is hardly enough to do anything more than turn to steam by the time it hits your engine.. the steam would then clean the carbon.. give you a cleaner burn etc.. much like water injection

Try that one...I think that completes the list.... every make of car on earth has now had a wrx scoop fitted to it!

Just kidding, i actaully like the look of that. Doesn't look like an afterthought 8-)

Great idea. Soon as car is out of warranty I will add this to my list..Excluding claims realated to sucking in water, providing you maintained the filter properly there's nothing this mod could cause to void your engine warranty. It's no different to fitting a snorkel or pod in the usual location when you think about it & no one running those has had issues.

The only time i've read where a pod has caused warranty issues is on a car running an air flow meter. Too much oil on the filter stuffed the sensor and engine tune. But you don't have this concern.

I'd say just do it. But if you're still worried about it, it wouldn't take you long to remove and put the standard stuff back in before services.
