Getting some ideas together to start rebuilding my 1980 Renegade. Am half thinking about a diesel. Its currently in a million bits with a very tired 258, t18a and dana 20. any suggestions about a diesel swap. sd33 turbo or a modern 2.5-3litre.

yes they came with a izuzu but the CJ10 came with the nissan sd33, JAA recently swaped a sd33 into their CJ7 seems to be a better option to me

yeah the sd33 is the best bet, the cj10's had these OEM, the bellhousings match the t176 tranny so you'll have to compare the t176 input to your t18 to see if it's compatible, get a turbo like the JAA article, I have this bellhousing and parts so if you need info pm me, if you want to go modern diesel check out www.motoresdiesel.com.au, but it wont be cheap, $15k, i've just got drawings off these guys for the 4 & 6

Of course these days diesel swaps are looking to be more and more common. Best question to yourself is are you looking for wow factor or are you looking for economy. GM diesels are looking to be a common swap in the states, big wow factor and lotsa grunt etc. The engine would never really work hard in its life in the rig. Just my two cents, but I'm a seppo so bigger is better. For swap ideas take a look at JP magazine's website also, they have archived buildup articles that have helped me in my reasearch in the past and could definately have bearing on where you will be going with yours as well. Also another thing to look at is Novak Adaptors website for info on your tranny and trans case. This place is invaluable for the information that they have. You could be able to increase the economy of the engine by adding an overdrive adaptor to the trans. Not sure if it is for you but an idea nontheless.

IMHO if you go the sd33 - get the turbo - the nonturbo version is a dog performance wise.

Lots of information here:

The SD 33 would be a good swap since "factory" parts should be locatable...including bellhousings to fit the T176.

I guess I should add that I am looking to do a diesel swap into a CJ8 and I am leaning towards the 4BT (lil brother to the Cummins 6BT found in Dodge trucks) ideally...but may end up going with the 6.2L because it's easier (cheaper too) to come by...and uses the same motor mounts as the small block Chevy...which are readily available from Novak or Advance Adapters.
