The top piccy is Mrs Kayjay navigating her way out of the bottom of Claw Gorge at Landcruiser Mountain Park and let me assure you that exit is a lot steeper and rougher than it looks in the pic. The other is all packed up and ready to head home with our palace on wheels behind the KJ. Both pics were taken on the AusJeep/SCJC weekend on 14th/15th June this year.

245/70 BFG all terrains. Can't go any bigger at moment coz off-road they rub on the rear flares and pop the buttons out. Need to increase bump stops for bigger tyres. I know ARB have tech screwed their flares on but thats not for me. :?
Lightforce lights. 240XGTs. 100W xenon globes, but they are the brightest 100watters I've ever seen 8)
Filters that cover the lights give spread and spot and they come in a range of pretty colours...if you're into that sort of thing

Sorry if its a dumb question.? :roll:On a river like this - No because it is not flowing that fast. Saturday I was in fast flowing rivers which were almost to bottom of windscreen (had a blind on) and I did get a small amount of water in
Cool walker nice to know.. With a stock standard cherokee would i be able to drive thru a river bank like that you went through?
Walker
09-11-2003, 09:35 PM
I would not go anywhere offroad with a stock KJ. I am not very happy with jeep at the moment (see my post - Good, bad & ugly). There is not enough clearance and definately not enough underbody protection

Hey walker - where abouts was the King River crossing? Is that somewhere near Pinapple. We plan to cross up near Sandy Flat this weekend - rangers have said it is fine.... only door sill high??
Walker
11-11-2003, 07:12 PM
That crossing was between pineapple falt and Kings hut.
I'll put in a pic now of the Macalster River we went through last Friday. It was even higher. I put on a tarp after this crossing as the river level was still going up and the filter was wet after going through it.

13-11-2003, 06:27 AM
Gabe,
stock KJ should have no problems what so ever on Frazer Island. I've seen heaps of soft roaders over there (subaru, honda CRV, X-Trail etc)
remember tyre pressure is the key to great sand driving. For heavily packed car I'd go for about 23psi and for light take it down to about 17psi.
have fun
MARXY
13-11-2003, 06:46 AM
On the fraser issue, just remember the norhtern head (not often travelled by most) is very rocky. The thing on the inland tracks are the massive tree roots that just pop up.
ok cool thanks guys for your inputs. Im a little bit more confident now with the4wd capabilities that I'm thinking of doing..
What about cape york. Would i need to mod that up a little?
Thanks
Gabes
polly
14-11-2003, 08:29 AM
Gabe, theres been standard vehicles going to the cape for years mate.
I'm sure a standard KJ would have no problems what so ever mechanically. Ultimately its up to you though, theres plenty of touring mods that would make life a lot easier. from duel batteries to larger fuel tanks and water holders.
Its really horses for courses, and you would be able to get by with no mods at all.
cheers

Cheers. Use the roof rack heaps. It is an awsome rack, holds somethin like 500kg and i can lift it by myself!!
A little large though but it used to be on the *ducks* Maverick. Plus we chuck a mattress on top and have the best view at Sat Speedway.
Also for sleeping when camping, we have man eating lizards 'round here and they're sneaky buggers! :D

Hi Sir Camel
I've had the Jeep now for a grand total of 10 days. Very different to driving the Suzuki Swift GTi I can tell you. It came with the rims, they are the American Racing brand, they look great. Taking it for its first official off road trip tomorrow and sunday, cant wait.
*Girlfriend is already complaining about money I want to spend on it and her hot feet when sitting in the passengers seat, told her the solution was to sit in the back!*

How are you finding the 32's??
Walker
02-03-2004, 02:14 PM
32's are great. Been out wheelin twice in them and you don't hit anything (which is not normal for a KJ  ). There's is a little bit of rubbing on full flex, but I am not going to fix that till the new rims arrive as they have different bacspacing.
Dorzun
02-03-2004, 04:34 PM
Are you getting any rubbing on road at full lock?
My coopers seem to be biting at the springs in tight basement turns etc.
Know I just got to figure out how to wear out a new set of coopers so I too can 32.
Walker
02-03-2004, 09:39 PM
Yea, I did get a bit on full lock, but only the rear of the front gaurds.(on the plastic lining. I have adjusted bump stops on the sterring.
I now have to do a 32 point U turn but no rubbing
There is no way I would have got 32's on without the extra lift I got by doing the cervis lift, it gives almost an extra .75" up front

cost me about $1300 (i think)...twas a while ago............ and No way you fitten 32" tyres with that lift. I scrubbing a bit and need to go up a little as it is with 31's. I'm thinking of longer shackles on the rear and space up the front to match with either longer springs or spacers..

32's would be a tough fit in the later model xj.. I have 4.5 and 31 mtr's (Thanks Camel) and they rub on the lower arm and rear wheel well. Spacers sort that out, But 32's... thought about it,, but i think it's too tight. You'd have to trim a fair bit!

Just went to a touch over 3 inches in the back and spot on 3 in the front. Had to do it while my fiancee was out wedding dress shopping for the day as she didn't want it lifted anymore. Luckily she hasnt noticed although when the tail gate is open in the garage it clears the garage door by about 5mm, if it touched she'd notice so I think this is as high as it's going ;)

Still need to lengthen the rear bump stops a little and also the front as a spacer went in. Surprisingly the Standard shocks are not far off the length required so Gojeeps shock extension mod will be next until I get the cash for a new set.

Steve.. how do you find the spare carrier? Does it block the view? Can it handle the load without bending the mounts? How is it mounted? Where from etc...:D
Steve F
09-03-2004, 08:32 AM
Hi Bogged,
I'm real happy with the tyre carrier. The only thing you have to be carefull of is that it is open far enough before you open the tailgate. Doesn't block the view out the back, you can see the top of the tyre but doesn't have too much of an affect, I'll get a pic out of the rear window tonight if I remember. Mine will take up to a 31, it's got a 30 on at the moment. You do notice it moving a little but it's certainly solid. There is a plate inside the bumper bar that mounts to the chassis, it also has a support that goes down to the tow bar mount, if you have a towbar it still mounts apparently.
I've done the Flinders and the corrugations out to Cameron Corner with it and also Fraser Island with no problems or signs of fatigue. I even had a work light on a stand mounted on it for the Flinders/Cameron Corner, the stand for the worklight split from the continual vibration but the carrier was fine :)
I got it from Chris at Consoles and Carriers on 0407 319 784 or 03 9704 7673 http://www.consolesandcarriers.com.au A great guy to deal with and he will customize them for specific tyre sizes.
Cheers

I'd be really interested to check out one or two of the side trails down there, a friend who lives locally is a NPWS dude so he may be able to let us in. Also know of a good little articulation checking place in Hornsby Heights.
Crikes, come to think of it. If we still had our house I'd have about 800sqm's of rocks to play on and a pool to sit and drink beers in too watch it from. Wonder if the ownbers will sell it back to me?
I need to see mine from a distance, there's a new renegade in the building at work and each time I drive past or park near it (have not had the chance to park alongside yet) or even see another one. I don't feel mine's all that different.
But there's a brighter side to that. Got talking to Heather about sometrips we could do and she was all for it. I then had to say we did not have a vehicle set up for them so result was I have to spend what is left from my tax (which should be a fair amount) on more mods. What a shame huh.

hey terry, your back door is missing?!!!!
better go back and find it or cats might sleep is ya jeep...Thanks for seeing that, billsta. I thought it was kinda drafty in there.
Actually, it serves two purposes: flow-through ventilation and it's easier on the rear axle.
I took it off once and never put it back on, although it does have quick-pull pins.
Only drawback is the fumes. :)-(:

happened once. it took weeks for the smell to dissapate
I took it off once and never put it back on, although it does have quick-pull pins.
so how much does ya uni body flex??
i always thought the rear door do a bit "holding" the XJ in shape..
is that a factor that you like to ignor?
Okie Terry
06-05-2004, 03:54 AM
At the risk of getting into yet another debate on hinged panels providing structural integrity, I don't get any extra flex with it or my doors off.
True, sometimes you can get the XJ flexed up and not be able to close the rear hatch, however the hatch isn't keeping the body from flexing, it is merely flexing along with the unibody.
Yes, any one of these panels will help keep the top from crushing in a rollover, but that is a different dynamic at play.

The handling is great and no wobbles or bump steer at all, the only problem if you could call it one is that you seem to hit bumps harder... it may be due to the angle of the control arms???
I reckon its great and at this stage I'm real happy with it
cheers

u want pics Mark - i'll give u pics...!
no track bar adjustment yet so right front tyre still sticks out further and hits lower rear of guard when lifted less than 2 feet.. i'm getting the track bar sorted before i cut the guards i guess.
rear guards need some chopping too, at least lower corners before i can see what will happen on the top and inside...
