The Vic High Country is a great place with a few little gems like this hill.
The awning is made by Gunyah http://www.go4x4.com.au/ Its canvas and much heavier than say the ARB version. Very quick to setup and take down. A simple one person operation.... once you get the hang of it. My 4WD centre made up some custom brackets to hold it onto the rails. Important to get roof rack first! so that the rails are spaced correctly then mount the awning. As most KJ'ers do I've got a Rola Vortex roof rack for bigger trips.

Got some much better spots closer to home for lets say, real 4Wding but the High country has a few little side tracks that make it a bit more interesting/challenging. Still a beautiful place to go camping and driving though.

here are a couple of pics with the awning setup from my Cape York trip last year.... between thunderstorms at Virilya Point.
If its wet, I put the front of the 2sec tent under the awning and still gives me room to sit. With the front under, when I get in or out the rain doesn't come straight in!
http://www.stephenmeddings.com/photogallery/100_3928.JPG
If its really wet then out comes an extra tarp to cover the back over to get to fridge etc and give somewhere dry to cook. You can get smaller awnings to do the same thing but the KJ is a bit to narrow.

Yes, once you get the hang of it. Just like shower tents. They made me practice it before I left the shop.
The tent is fantastic for me. They says its two person... two very friendly people. Needs some more ventilation at the back for those hot nights. On those really cold nights it actually keeps your warmer than my larger tent. Overall I love it. Just wish they made a 3 person version.... then you could 2 people in.

Yes id say there would be a few groups going through this weekend. Nice & slippery & muddy. Now would be a good time to test out your STT's. Actually I gave the KJ & the snork a work out just this morning going up the road, lots of flooded drains, some of the roads were better than some of the creek crossings Ive done.

G'day everyone,
Stephenmeddings (and other KJ renegade people!) - what do you think of the load capacity of the Rola Vortex on the 2005 Renegade oversize bars?
I've got a set of Rhino cross bars (prob a couple kg), i want to get the Rola Vortex (17kg), but my manual tells me that there's a max load rating of 29kg? for the oversize renegade roof rails!
So, by rights i should only carry about 10kg of load on the roof (apart from the weight of the rails/basket)!!
Have you found any issues with this? - coz it looks like you put a bit more than 10kg on your roof.
Thanks,
Eric.

Eric,
I have a stock standard KJ 2006 CRD Renegade with the oversize rails. Jeep info with/on car states max load 68 kg (150 lbs). Recently fitted the Rola Vortex rack using an old pair of cross bars from an earlier vehicle - no problems.
Good luck.

08-04-2008, 03:50 PM
G'day stephenmeddings and nervous nellie,
Interestingly, both of you have 06 Renegades where the manual says 68kg weight limit... Stephen also mentioned that he'd loaded his to 68kg on the cape trip - so that's a pretty good indicator of the roof rail's capability!
Maybe my 2005 Renegade is different? I wouldn't think so as the roof rails look identical to the 06 ones... or maybe my manual is off!! Who knows.
I'm picking up my skidplates from the dealer tonight so i'll ask them...
Thanks!
loric

hehe. Dealer can't confirm either way. He reckoned that 30kg sounded right.
Also picked up some transmission and transfercase skid plates. They are a hellava lot beefier than i expected them to be. If anyone wants pics/measurements of these (before i install them) let me know and i'll take some pics/measurements...

Replaced my steel cable with some 8mmx40m Dynamica Rope and a bigger hook. Got an eyelet installed so the hook had somewhere to call home. Also replaced the standard roller fairlead with a Dynamica plastic hawse fairlead, so no chance of the rope getting caught in the rollers.

G'day,
Here are some pics (first pics of my KJ on Ausjeep!).:)
Went with the missus and two mates in the back. Crossed the Howqua, went up 16mile Jeep track to Bluff Hut, then across to King Billy where we set up camp in the saddle below the No1 peak.
The CRD KJ is awesome! (apart from being way too low - mine is unlifted as yet). The eng, trans and case bash plates copped a hiding (the eng one has to come off to get smashed back into shape)**) All the other cars up there were lifted and with muddies - but we went up OK in a stocker (apart from tyres and bashplates). Just had to go real slow and scratch the tummy every few metres.

Then it got real cold and snowed about 4-6". made for some awesome fun driving:D . Was hairy going down the steep, narrow, icy sections - couldn't see the big rocks coz of the snow drift and slipped, smacked, spun my way down. Lots of the icy slips sideways into ruts (and nearly off the track!!) I nearly packed my daks when the tail end was sliding round to the front on one steep icy bit. Too much fun to be legal!

Thanks fellas - i had an awesome time!:)
My bashplates also had an good time - i hope i can remove the front one easily coz it's bashed real good.
I was really impressed by the transmission skid too - it held up really well and i'm sure i woulda knocked the oil filter off otherwise.
What my KJ desperately needs is a lift - i'm planning on getting one in the next two weeks, but am worried that the standard 2" may not be enough. This is the first time that i've offroaded an IFS and noticed that you lose heaps of clearance purely from the front suspension compressing. And since the lowest part of the car is pretty much under the heavy CRD donk... The GQs SFA in comparison - I always had the frt diff as the lowest point and the clearance doesn't really vary that much. (i'm not intending to start a SFA debate here coz the KJ is a different beast altogether to the GQ...:) )
Gunna head back up there in a month or so - this time armed with a lift!

Top Piccys Eric.. Snow and tents funny stuff
Lift for a CRD, Contact CRDSTU, he'll sort you out with the best option, and he can supply a snorkel as well.
From what I have seen that front engine/suspension skid that comes on the CRD standard is not the same thickness as the one you buy as a separate skid, metal seems thinner
loric
29-04-2008, 11:18 AM
G'day Cmohr,
I reckon you're right about the CRD stock front skid. It's nowhere near as thick in gauge as the transmission and trans case skids. I'll take it off this week for some reverse bashing. :D
In fact, the bashplates were pretty much the only thing that got scarred on the trip (so i suppose they are doing their job well!). I did get the hitch receiver plastic trim bit ripped off - must have been one of the steeper drainage humps on the tracks.
The KJ is real good in tight twisty tracks - heaps smaller than the tank Toyos/Nissans, though the track ruts they make, were spaced a little too wide for me and i ended up straddling a lot ot the really rutted sections. That bit was really hard when under half a foot of snow - coz everything looks flat! And then the icyness makes it too easy to slip sideways into the ruts when you try to (guess) where to straddle them.
All in all, i'm pretty impresed by the KJ once the 'teething probs' have been sorted out (no more funny temp guage, provent is now catching oil etc) The other drivers were a bit surprised to see us up there. They were all in lifted GQs/toyos that were like monster trucks compared to the stock KJ. We camped up top of the range, (they all stayed halfway down) and the looks on their faces when we came down the mountain in the snow was gold!**)
This was our KJ hood ornament: (which was removed before we set off!)

Yes not all engine skids are created equal. I compared mine with a mate's who has an '03 KJ. The design / shape was identical but his was at least 1mm thicker and weighed about twice what mine did! They obviously decided to save a few bucks on this.
Cool pics & quite a trip for its maiden voyage, just watch out on those snow chains (do they go on the front tyres) as there is not much room between the upper ball joint & the tyre.
Chains can be an issue. You won't get them on the front, they have to go on the rears. I was running 245/70s on mine with OME shocks, and chains would actually rub on the rear shocks as they are fatter than standard shocks but there was no way I could have put them on the front.

Watched a TJ go through first and thought no worries, but turned the lockers on... just in case. I've got them so I use them. Didn't want to get stuck. Once it dropped in, kept the foot down to keep it moving forward and once the front got out.... slowly, the lockers help pull me fully out. That was my impression, but I slightly wrong there as I just got sent some stats from the weekend.
Patriot was 298, XH Commander was 375, my KJ was 495 and the winning CJ3 was 1152 (next closest TJ was 1102).
I think those numbers are inches and derived from a highly mathamatical combination of wheelbase & actual distance up ramp.

It would take a hellava lot of torque to do that!!
Do you reckon that the axle was damaged - and that became the stress riser? (Where the splined shaft inserts into the socket) The pic looks like it wasn't pure brittle fracture, and that there's a fair bit of plastic deformation.
I like the swirley shear pattern on the shaft too! - best set of pics in the forum i reckon. :D
I've heard of cases at work, where rubber seals on big mining mill shafts have worn a really shallow groove - and the shafts have failed as a result.
Or maybe you just have a killer donk unda da hood! LOL

Hope thats not the one on the Poly website. Looks like front end damage.
Anyway, got my baby back yesterday. Everything seems OK. Strange getting back into it after having a Suburu Outback as a loan car for nearly 2 weeks. Need to take it out into the local bush and give a workout before going away just to make sure lockers etc are working correctly.
They showed me the right front axle. Haven't got any pics but it wasn't far from breaking either. Had a very nice twist in it and thats why they replaced it as well.
Just waiting for the bill now
only 17 so haven't done much off-roading, hoping to join the adelaide jeep club when i turn 19 when i have time. I drive around the adelaide hills some weekends, where i took these photos. anyone know any trails around the adelaide area that would be good for going alone at? my friends are still on thir L's lol
is a 2.4 petrol manual, no modifications apart from most of the stereo - half the entertainment's inside the cabin. proper first car, so very happy with the kj. proven to be an absolute awesome car whatever i need it for

That's amazing Stephen. I cant believe the alloy diff casting didnt break before the axle. I guess with the torque of the CRD, the Lockers and tyres it was bound to happen - well something was.

Thanks Mr Greenjk, I try hard, Maybe it's the "Little Bit of Wrangler" it has in it that makes it so appealing :p
I do love my KJ, but, must be honest that if there had been a 4 door Wrangler available back in 2004, I would have bought it over the KJ, but, I do love my KJ.

Ed & I installed some of STU's front strut plates & rear coils over the weekend, I'm putting STU's extra long travel shocks in throught the week.
Here's some pics so you can see how ended up doing it. Pics for the front install are on my mobile so those will have to wait.
560mm (centre of hub to outside edge of flare) front and back (same each side :D ) Ground to bottom of side mirror 1260mm (or 52.5"). Remember no rear isolators (spacers)

G'day CD,
Nice lift...
Thanks for posting those pics. I've also put in an order for the stu long coils and shocks and i'll be doing the lift (front and back) when all the bits and pieces arrive in the mail.
Did you undo the rear swaybar with the flex-em-up trick?
Thanks,
Eric.

No mate rear swaybar was and still is connected, and I think you will find that leaving the front one on will help the rear flex out (if you do it like I did).

Here are some pics of the KJ after the crdstu lift kit install.
- There are some pics compared to a stock GQ. The KJ’s body is heaps higher, the diffs at same height (same wheel/tyre sizes);

http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=26675&d=1213794620
- The rear axle articulation is amazing! The brake line still has a bit of slack left, the LH coil dropped down about 1" off the top mount (but prob can't fall out), the RH side bumpstops are touching...

http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=26686&d=1213794766
- The front articulation not quite so good. That front swaybar does a good job of trying to keep things flat!
http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=26687&d=1213794821
- The stock size ATRs look too small! Now i want big muddies LOL...
- The ride and handling is great! Before the lift, the KJ felt all loose and sloppy and would lurch over speed humps etc. It feels like a new car now!

So tell us....... did your old man try it in the locked TJ? :D
He wanted to but I had to talk him out of it. It took him long enough to get me out so if he went down we would have been screwed. Might go back in the next few weeks with a few more TJ's, so he might give it a go then. I'll get some pics if he does.

31/10.5/15 Mickey Thompson MTZs on 15 x 7 steelies.
Custom lift. approx 4inches.
"The Belafonte" was first commissioned in May 2004, after an initial period of being a person Daily Driver, ferrying simple passenger folk around town, it then was intoduced to "dirt" at Landcrusier Mountain Park in late 2006. Upon failing to drive successfully in the carpark area, It was destined for greater things, so many discussions with Hammonds insued and a Old Man Emus lift was settled upon, (with a few magic ingredients) and the first incarnation of "The Belafonte" as an overland exploration vehicle was created. Mr ARB was then visited to procure a Bullbar, to protect against the Hopping Death on its Maiden Exploration Adventure across Queensland and into South Australia. The first set of tyres were Cooper STT's but, thse have been traded for Mickey Thompson MTZ's now.
One of the greatest hurdles The Belafonte had to endure was its thirst for fuel, and air, a cargo box was fitted into the rear to organise storage, roof rack for additioinal storage, a snorkel to let him breath a little easier, a a frigde to help me breath a little easier. Full set of armour was fitted to protect his goolies from those bastard rocks that all the tracks seem to have in them these days, why in my day, there were no rocks, they hadn't been invented yet, there was just volcanos and dinosours to worry about blah blah blah..... but I digress, He has been on many wonderful adventures and met many wonderful people. Funny things People, they are just like sausages, no two are exactly the same and some don't even eat corn, but, I don't discriminate and let sausages be sausages no matter what.

Hey Yohan, Certainly was a good time wasn't it... the CD from Eureka certainly has some funny shots! I think if you crossed the river about 1 maybe 2 feet downstream that rock would not have held the KJ up. To use the words of the wise one Cmohr "those bastard rocks that all the tracks seem to have in them these days, why in my day, there were no rocks, they hadn't been invented yet, there was just volcanos and dinosours to worry about blah blah blah....." ha ha, Some plates n' lift would be very benificial indeed.

Hi Paul, this was yesterday.. I've had the 4:10ratio's and Tru trac's installed for while now. The slow crawl is fantastic with 31", Haven't had much chance to see how the Tru-trac's works as yet...but I've noticed that the wheels don't spin any where near as much as they used to. However I believe that some contact with the surface is required for the Tru Trac to engage & if there is no such contact gently pressing on the brakes does lock up the spinning wheel.
Some of the tracks are heavly rutted and there's alot of water even with all the sun we've been having...and some sticky mud to add the icing on the cake so to speak.
wow that looks like sooo much fun. i wanna try it.

Nice I have a 10-17 zoom Tonika Fisheye on my Canon 30D but the wife splurged on xmas for me and got an "L" series F4 17-40 but those images look sweet, I really need to be outside when the sunrises unlike inside of the tin shed where I work for most of the time. Mine is a digital zoom lenses so it fills the image at both 10mm and 17mm

Yeah, I know the feeling, It was a rare daylight exit from work yesterday.
I have all kinds of fisheye, circular, full frame and diagonally corrected.
8mm (circular), 17-28 (full frame fisheye zoom) both distort and curve the image and then 12-24, 17-28 and a prime 14mm all corrected ultra wide angle lenses.
I know....... I'm a freak.

But the fish would be dead coz it's out of water...

Hahahaha.. Thanks lads
Fisheye is a 180 deg view. We actually have close on 180 deg vision ourselves, its known as periferal vission, some thing our brains filter out to an extent, and we only really concentrate on our centre field of veiw, but are aware of the perifial.
So the see a fisheye view is a way to see and be aware of everything surrounding you at once. Its a powerful image because it lets you see what I was seeing at the time, the whole sky was actually like that, and as a photographer, it was the only was I could show people what I was feeling at the time. Its gratifying to know that I have been able to share with others not only what I saw, but the sense of what I felt. When people say, wow, that what I was saying and why I took the pics.
Thankyou

hey,
some pics of straddie on the weekend.
no action pics as its too difficult to convince the mrs to get out of the air con lol
the kj went great, the only problem was driving 1.5 hours after high tide in soft sand it was swerving all over the place in 4hi...4lo fixed that problem however much lower fuel economy. whatever, was awesome fun either way. btw, i was reading the manual on turning the esp off and there is no button where they said there is one to switch it off. does that mean my model (04 crd limited) doesnt have it? was impossible to drive it steady in 4hi in sand that wasnt super hard.
cmohr
16-02-2009, 05:14 PM
Good piccies..
Sliding around, in 4Hi, could be just tracking in other vehicles tracks????? You tend to just follow in other tracks, and if there has been a heap of people cris crossing all over the beach it makes for bumpy ride. Don't really know aboot the esp thing, but, had read posts from others that it automatical switches off in 4Lo??? How fast where you going????
angryassdrummer
16-02-2009, 05:36 PM
never had a problem with it on hard sand ever, but an hour after high tide driving in soft sand it was a weird drivign sensation. I thought it might be the tracks i was driving in but even when there were no tracks it would turn and jolt the car back and forwards. It wasnt a big deal especially on the way back when there was more beach as the tide went out. i was driving 40kmh which i believe was the limit there, tho there was a few yobbos going much much faster than that which was a little scary as there were some secluded camp sites with kids nearby that could of easily have got in the way.
cmohr
17-02-2009, 10:38 AM
Yeah, there is always some Hero's on the beach where-ever you go, flying along, thinking they are sooooo good because they are driving faster than everybody, until they kill some poor kiddies running to or from the water, or roll their vehicle. :wall:
angryassdrummer
17-02-2009, 11:43 AM
worst thing tho was a few kms up the beach we had to virtually drive in the water or up the dunes where there is vegetation because they parked in a very thin stretch of beach right where the tracks were to drive.
they were in the water laughing at it....i dont get road rage often but damn i had to stop myself from getting out and having a few nice words with them....but was having too much fun to let them drag me down.
cant wait to go back asap

btw, i was reading the manual on turning the esp off and there is no button where they said there is one to switch it off. does that mean my model (04 crd limited) doesnt have it?
04 = no ESP
ESP came out in the 06, 05 & below had LSD in the rear. They gained ESP but lost LSD. Hope it helps.

ESP gives you LSD by braking the wheel which is spinning faster than the others.

I thought ESP let you read other peoples minds, and like, tell the future and stuff, like lotto numbers. Funny isn't it, that some Psychic's tell people if they give them $100.00 they'll tell them winning lotto numbers, and this is how they make a living, but, they never use the numbers to win lotto so they don't have to work..... and the guy who pays them for the winning numbers only ever does it once, because the numbers don't win, so they think, "well, he;'s not a very good Psychic because the numbers I got from him were not the winning numbers!!!!!!!! I'd better find another Psychic......" Sorry, what was I talking about again????
