Mind you, it often tells you you're in trouble before you realise it yourself, so maybe your idea was correct after all!

They're not as quiet as the road terrains I had but aren't as bad as the Buckshots. The buckshots are on the trailer, 5 in all. Just in case I want to get dirtier. They are on steel rims. I'll take a photo of the whole rig sometime.

How do you find the snork?

KJ_andy
16-03-2009, 11:23 AM
The fitting was a debacle, just due to the guys on the job. Ever since, it's helped with fuel economy (but I wrecked that again with the lift and tyes) and there's a lot less dust in the air box. Not been wet in anger yet but I'll raise the breather pipes too before I try river crossings. The upper bracket needs strengthening, its in the pipeline but I'm OS at the moment and wont be home for a while.

Interesting. I like the orange. I even re connected the parklights back to the orange as it is a dual filament bulb with the low wattage not connected for the export market. :) Looked much better although my one was dark green.

Here's my '02 ex Japan Limited. I've got the Ham radio in and the next mod is full US spec park/marker lights etc. I'll get a mate to bring 'em back when he is Hawaii later in the year. Decent tyres - Scorpion ATRs will be next.

Jimmy agressive tyres. That is why you can feel mini vibes while crawling, it is your tyres. When I had the XJ had the same thing with my new agressive tyres. The issue you have at 100km could be related to your lift, not the transmission, check all your angle etc to ensure that are within 3 degrees of one another...

Nah I had all those issues before the lift and new tyres. I was hoping the vibes at 60km where just a balancing thing, it's actually better with the new tyres but still there. The hoping im getting is better with the new diff but still there. I don't think it's anything major yet, i mean it hasn't gotten any worse with the new setup. Although the noise from the tyres does drown out most other noises.. including the nagging wife.. hehee

Until the loose nut behind the wheel had a go at a beach that he should have known better not to. And after my previous three cars were Patrols, guess what happened to be the vehicle to snatch me out!!

So How did you get out ? Did you pay up for the recovery specialist ?

Weather looked nice , did you catch anything ?

Gee man
09-06-2009, 02:40 PM
Yep, cost me $100, but considering the waves were starting to wash up to the wheels, and it was starting to get dark I would rather pay that than deal with the possibilities. Ended up flooring it down to the harder stuff closer to the water, got a bit of speed up and then just nailed it to get as high up the beach as possible, but at least facing the dunes. If you know this spot near Lancelin there is a track just over the dunes so he snatched me over. took a few goes so was well and truly in it. A lift kit is definately needed although this one was my own fault, too soft and too much angle. a quad came past while we were waiting and he got bogged three times and we had to lift him out as well.
Weather was perfect for the whole weekend, got plenty of herring and whiting, and lots of green cans.

palla
09-06-2009, 06:38 PM
Looks like it was really soft, what pressures did you go down to? One time at Wilbinga, the 1st time I met Aus-kj, the beach was a real horror show, we went down to single digits on the pressure guage to get out. Oh & it was 38 degrees that day as well.

100 bucks isnt too bad, I once paid the same amount to get a troopy recovered out of swamp land down in Collie & the towie was all dressed up going to his daughters school nite that he missed to come rescue me. By the end his shirt & paints were all covered in stinky smelly muddy swamp water. But I havent got any pics of that twas the time before digital cameras.

Gee man
09-06-2009, 11:28 PM
I know the guys who recover four wheel drives are making some good cash money for half an hours work but against what can happen it is pretty cheap.

I always have my tyres about 16-18 psi. I had been running up and down the beaches and dunes north of Lancelin for four days before this happened and no problems. Got to admit I loved the sound of the 3.7 litre petrol purring along for miles of beach. This was the last section coming back towards town where normally you go left to the off road area and road to town but I stopped, had a look and thought the good part of the beach was a bit narrow, but the KJ is smaller than my old patrol so I would be okay. This section starts at the sign, and you can see i made it a whole 30 metres and i was just going sideways. really really soft once i got of the dry top section. bottomed out very quickly and that was that.

loric
10-06-2009, 12:06 PM
Do you reckon that with a hand winch (or bar winch) and a buried spare wheel you could have recovered yourself?

I've never tried the buried spare wheel technique...
:)

glend
10-06-2009, 02:05 PM
Burying a wheel is a fair amount of work. You could also use a Danforth type boat anchor (aka sand anchor) and bury that sucker. It digs itself deeper as you exert pull on it (and they are cheap). A 15lb anchor that will hold a six metre boat in a blow will certainly do the job.

loric
10-06-2009, 02:10 PM
LOL.
I don't usually have a boat anchor handy in the recovery kit! :)

Maxtrax are on my list for these conditions (but i haven't saved up enough yet!)

angryassdrummer
10-06-2009, 02:34 PM
we purposely drove through the softest sand we could to get bogged at stradbroke to test out the maxxtrax
we had the tyres at 20psi dropped them to 18 put the maxtrax in front and drove out easily

best $$$ we spent

rainbow beach/cooloola was amazing the long weekend.
but how packed does the camping get!??!?! the whole beach was packed, luckily we had a B&B in rainbow. The freshwater track was awesome in itself then the beach was amazing. Monday was the best everyone had gone and we had most of the beach to ourselves.
Oh btw dogs were allowed everywhere we went, Rangers even played with him! were dogs everywhere bar the on beach camping. Anyone with a family dog i say take them next time your there they love it! My dog zak was body surfing all weekend with me, they are allowed at rainbow campsites too!

Cool! How long have you had them on for? I'm interest in there longevity. I don't think they are as good as some..

I just did got my pinion reset and it's has made a big difference in fuel. I just need to work out what pressures suit them best. They grip really well on road at 38psi.. I didn't like the feel at 45psi, they just didn't feel safe.

Just finished fitting my new roof rack. Setting up for a trip to the cape and needed more room for the Oztent, etc, etc. It's a Hannibal rack and awning, the rack I ended up putting on is to suit the new Prado, which is 200mm longer than the KJ specific one. No surprise the KJ one isn't normally stocked over here and I didn't want to wait for one to come from South Africa. Dimensions are 2.0m x 1.25m and load rating is now 120kg as the mounts run the full length of the roof.

hey dirt Pig, you shouldn't need to pound the pinch welds with 31's.
I'm running 245/75 16s which are 31" diameter with no probs.

I wasn't sure whether they would rub or not. But decided to pound them anway. I've got 17 inch rims so tyre choices are somewhat limited.
Also considering getting a second set of 16 inch rims just for Offroad.

How do you like the new tyres ? do you think they are and louder on the road than the old wranglers ?

Loving the jeep been able to rediscover my love of camping/fishing,going bush - had a falcon while at uni *yawn*
loving the look and feel of the new tyres - litle louder than stock wranglers but not really noticeable.

Yep would love to give her a lift, on the wishlist - just reading the kj lift sticky in this forum for some more info - wondering what it would cost for about a 2-2.5 inch lift for the kj...

Cheers for the welcome look forward to picking the brains of more experienced guys on the site..

Welcome CJ2a, I put a Dobinsons lift in mine, it is advertised as a 35mm lift but it every bit of 50mm. I later changed the rear shocks for Rancho's as they had a bit more travel. If I remember rightly the Dobinsons kit cost around the $800 mark including the freight.

Thanx Snail, The flys aren't so bad. I hurt my back so we checked into the motel rather than use the camping trailer. The local area has some interesting features but I'd need wheels to see most of them. Halls Creek is not as daunting as first thought ,though a few of the travellers said they had been stuck here for a while before waiting on parts (not all Jeep drivers). Not too many stores though but a great town swimming pool, only open 4-6pm??. Luckily the other half has a great sense of humour and has stopped crying (just joking she's been great). We are making the most of what we've got but I have been on the net a lot. Expect some post cards from the local tourist centre.

I need to do a video at the car wash to "show" how they create small funnels that go str8 off the back of the Jeep. You can actually see the "vortex" by shooting the wash wand down the side of the Jeep. It keeps the air moving away fron the back of the Jeep instead of creating turbulent air...also seems to keep the rear window a bit cleaner in the rain.

Another thing I have thought of making is a splitter and rear chin. One across the bottom of the bumper that extends out about 12" and one just under the rear window across the back that would keep the upper and lower air from converging.

I did a test run for mpg with only highway miles...50 north then fill up...50 south then fillup. I kept the rpms at 1785 (~61mph). I got an overall average of true highway only miles at 61mph of 42mpg. I do keep my tires at 40 psi also...but I have the OME lift so I am sstill very happy.

DarbyWalters
30-12-2009, 10:22 AM
The Airtabs are probably good for about 3% improvement...maybe a bit more highway. The big change was the GreenDieselEngineering.com ECU reprogram.

Hi All,

Thought it was about time I posted a picture of my 2006 CRD KJ. Have been a member for a while though this is my first post. This is currently my 3rd Jeep - No:1 was a 42 Willys MB Jeep when I was 16 years old. No:2 was a 2000 XJ Diesel.

I have had the KJ for about 10 months now and really enjoy it! :D Mainly use it for towing my camper trailer and tinnie around. It already had Pedders suspension fitted when I bought it, other than that it's relatively standard. Starting to spend a bit of money on it now and purchased new tyres today from Bob Jane. They are Maxxis M/T 762 Bighorns 245/75R/16 which only cost me $210 each, I thought they were a bargain. The spare wouldn't fit in the holder so when I got home 15 minutes work with a jigsaw removing plastic from the holder and elongating the holes had it sorted.

Next purchase will be an ARB bar and a snorkel. ARB quoted $495 for the snorkel and want another $468 to fit it, so maybe I'll have a go at doing it myself over a weekend.

Cheers

Rob

Hey Rob...
Got to agree with you - but then all the Jeeps have a special 'look'.

Expect thats where the 'classic' styling kicks in keeping true to the original version and following it through the different models ... round headlights/grill ect.

Hi guys, here's my kj, 02 3.7L Limited, purchased about 2 months ago with 90k on it. Apart from the fact I've already had the a/c evaporator leaking into the passenger side and I now have to replace the radiator, it's a great car! Hopefully I've got all the problems out of the way and it's nothing but smooth travelling from here!

Apart from the few little problems it's had, I'm pretty happy with the kj.

 ciao guys, finally managed to take some decent pics of the Red Indian here in Italy.

Won't be taking it seriously offroad until we get it back to enzed otherwise the MAF inspection team will want to dis-assemble it when it comes out of the container in Christchurch! We ended up with a quote via container which is less than RoRo, and as it's from the same co. which is shipping our furniture etc (big multinational with offices here and in NZ), we didn't hesitate. Only catch is that it is ex-UK, so I'm still working on convincing the better half of the economics of driving back there in early December!

Ferrai, when you are building your cost benefit analysis for that proposed drive, consider the wear and tear of driving the vehicle that far (across what is some very dangerous territory, even more so without a support team of some sort). The cost of that drive will be significant and when you weigh that up against the cost of the container shipping also consider that you will reduce the usable life of the vehicle by the distance of the trip if driven. There is the human, country, and parts risk factors as well. Of course if your more interested in the adventure of that drive then the eventual longevity of the KJ in NZ then forget I mentioned it.

;) Hey Glend, You didn't really think I wanted to drive her all the way down to Singapore? We only need to get to a place called Biggleswade, near Cambridge and straight up the A1 from Dover; about 1,535km of mainly motorway driving according to Mr Google.

Since the last pics were taken I 'dechromed' the hood badge, taking to it with a file I use for my models - next I'll do the two badges on the rear door. Couldn't see the logic of chrome badges when there isn't any other chrome trim on the exterior (if we ignore the light reflectors).........it's a JEEP, isn't it??

Put new wiper blades on her today - €13.50 for replacement blade inserts, which also left me with a section long enough for the rear wiper on the Panda 4x4 (also difficult to find replacements). New boots are next on the list (Scorpion ATR 245/70's), and then I'll start on a few of those hoses which you guys have recommended to replace.

We're also making good progress on getting the 'Statement of Compliance' for LTNZ, I've managed to get the name of a guy at Chrysler (helps when we work for Fiat Group!) so eventually will have the right piece of paper on company letterhead to ensure the rego in NZ is a breeze.

ciao for now, Richard

 Yep, Depends on the paint colour and. of course, personal preference!

For the Inferno Red of our KJ, I prefer the 'dechromed' look - which still has chrome around the edges, by the way, so the badge is not completely dechromed anyway...............just enough to look perfect to my eyes, and they're the only ones that count.

Now I need to decide what to do about the 'Cherokee' letters embossed on the side mouldings; OK, they are black like the mouldings, but no differentiation so most people would miss them...............probably mistake it for a Liberty!!

ciao Richard ;)

245/70/16 IS THE BIGGEST LEGAL SIZE TYRE YOU CAN FIT. You can go bigger, but, legal. No.

CRDSTU is the guy to talk to if you want more lift, Remember 50mm is the biggest legal lift for any and all brands kind types of vehicle here in QLD.

Whe going bigger tyres, you need to also think about bigger bumpstops, so as the larger diameter wheels dont rip off flares and contact body work. Also gearing becomes a factor. I stongly suggest with a V6 that if going up to a 31 (245/75/16) the pinion reset is done. This corrects the speedo, more importantly tho it corrects the info the TCM is getting so the auto transmission will be able to cope better with the difference in tyre diameter.

ciao CMOHR; just fitted 245/70R16 Scorpion ATR's all round (5) to the CRD - do you recommend the pinion reset?

We're taking it to the beach next week for our summer vacation (450km or so, down to a pretty little village called Allumiere, 500m up on the hills above Civitavecchia - near Rome), so I'll check the speedo against the Garmin but I'm interested in your comments. It's a 20 minute drive each morning down to the beach at San Augustino, down a dirt/sand track to the 'free' area.

thanks for any suggestions

With the placard stock size of 235/70R16, having 245/70R16 is the largest legal size as cmohr says. It increases the diameter to 29.50" from stock 28.95". I calculate 29.54" to be the largest legal size....well here in QLD anyway (no more than 15mm bigger than stock).

Ferraricheals - if you're worried about the impact on your speedo, check out http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html and put in your dimensions. When I put in the specs above, it says that the speedo reading will be 1.9% too slow. That is, when your speedo tells you 60mph (96.56 km/h) you'll actually be doing 61.1 mph (98.33 km/h).

I'm currently running the same size (245/70R16) and personally haven't bothered. Just factor it in when you come through speed traps!!

thanks for the feed back. but I ended up going 245/75/16 cooper STT.they fit well .and are 19 mil taller than new 235/70/16 top and bottom. from the near worn out all terrains to these it gave me 1" higher in measured lift from ground.speedo about 5-6 kph out at 100kph.traction is great esp with the arb lockers.clearance good for a kj. we did have to cut the plastic away and we bent over body pertrusion on front gaurd and sealed it up with sicflex and srpay over with body deadner.finished up nice.i will have to change bump stops eventually as the top of the back guards did rub on full articulation.but no damage and it got a good work out yesterday.very happy with the safari snorkel to.only a whinch to go now

I dont think the CRD suffers from the gearing change as badly as the V6 does. And, the CRD has a differnt Auto transmission to the V6 as well. I personally wouldnt bust a nut trying to get it changed, if only 245/70/16's.

It is now considered "Unroadworthy" in Australia to have a speedo that reads a lower speed than actual speed.

If you are worried about speed take it to jeep and they reset the speedo according to the tyre specs you are running, not overly expensive in relation to a speeding fine and the hassils that go with it.

Check your speedo against a gps (beg, borrow or steal if you haven't got one!). On 235/70R16's my speedo read 104 when the GPS read 100 and 116 @ 110, but was almost spot-on at 60. With 245/75R16's it was spot on at 100 and 110 but read low at 60. I've currently got 245/70R16's and (as you might expect) it's now slightly high at 100 and 110 and fractionally low at 60.

 Thanks guys for all the feedback & excellent suggestions - here in Italy I would be strictly illegal with the 245's, but as the Red Indian is still on UK plates (and RHD) and the UK rego doc (V5C) doesn't mention which sizes are homologated - and we'll be shipping it ex-EU to NZ in December (where the Tyre regs don't say anything about non-standard sizes) - there's no worries on that regard.

I have a Garmin GPS so will be checking closely the actual speed vs indicated and will report back at the end of August.

Thank you for you email enquiry to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (the department) regards tyre size increases in Queensland.

Vehicle standards and vehicle modifications are covered within the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 1999. This regulation lists the requirements for the fitment of alternative tyres, rims and wheels.

Currently the regulation stipulates that the combination of a tyre and rim is permitted to have a diameter of not more than 15mm more than the diameter specified by the vehicle’s manufacturer or not more than 26mm less than the diameter specified by the vehicle’s manufacturer.

It is important to remember that while a tyre manufacturer may give the diameter of a tyre it can differ noticeably when fitted to alternative rims. Therefore to achieve an accurate representation of the tyre and rim diameter while in combination, the measurement should be taken while the tyre is fitted to the rim and with no loads applied (including vehicle).

This method of determining the tyre and rim diameter ensures the vehicle complies with the legislative requirements of fitting alternative tyre and rims whether the vehicle is loaded or unloaded. It is also to ensure consistency with the vehicle manufacturer’s method for determining the original tyre and rim combination’s diameter.

If the tyres and rims you are wishing to fit to your vehicle are within the dimensions mentioned above and load and speed ratings comply, the vehicle will be acceptable on Queensland’s roads. If the tyres and rims fall outside these requirements, the vehicle would be deemed non-complying and not be considered for an exemption to these requirements.

As you may be aware the National Code of Practice for Light Vehicle Modification and Construction will be utilised by Queensland Transport later this year. In its current draft form the National Code of Practice allows for a 50mm increased tyre size on 4wd vehicles. However, as the National Code of Practice is in draft form and currently awaiting comments from internal and external stakeholders it is unknown what tyre and rim diameter increase the finalised document will allow.

Until the National Code of Practice has been finalised and endorsed under the Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Standards and Safety) Regulation 1999, the current requirements must be complied with.

I hope this answers your enquiry. Should you have further enquiries please contact the modifications help desk on:- 07-032534851, Monday to
Friday, 830am to 430pm (Wednesday, 930am to 430pm)

For those that missed Jambo 2010 here is a link to one of Hunty's videos, featuring the KJ:

The descent to the muddy rutted creek crossing begins at 1:07 in the video and the first couple of vehicles are Grands, which have to be winched out of the ruts.

Go forward to 3:17 (to 4:10) on the runtime to see the only IFS vehicle to make it up out of the muddy rutted creek bank without assistance (climbing a tree in the process).

http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=100166&highlight=video

BTW, I am not claiming this was difficult, as with most tracks the right line is everything. Everyone behind me got up following my line (but they were driving SFA vehicles with big rubber). There was a wrecked car down in the creek that blocked one side and funneled all the vehicles into the ruts.

I just want a cheap option at the moment and i dont like body lifts but i was thinking of getting the guard rolled up and getting a heat gun and molding the plastic guard up to suit

Hello Josh, Welcome.
I like the look of your set up mate, if the scraping is not bad why worry, just drive it.
I think you would have trouble trying to fit a body lift on a KJ, even if you did like them.
I run a 10mm spacer in the front of mine, fits on top of strut which gives it about an inch lift, nothing in the rear though.

cmohr
19-01-2011, 06:35 AM
Rear Extended Bumpstops are what you need. Bigger diametre tyre needs to have its upward travel limited to stop contact with body work, esp if the tyre is on a rim with less offset. I think CRDSTU may still supply them, or you can make a set yourself out of high density rubber block. Mount them on the lower spring perch, they stop coil stacking as well.

joshywoshy
19-01-2011, 06:43 AM
Yeah i'd never do a body lift on any 4wd anyways. How's the spacer in the front? do you have any trouble with it like noises and stuf? howcome you dont have one in the rear?
i was thinking bigger bump stops but i dont want to lose the travel. thats why i was going to do some molding. but then again i probably only need an inchmore of stop so i guess it would affect it much

Body lifts are only possible when the body is bolted to a separate chassis - the KJ is a monocoque so a body lift is impossible.

I've done exactly the same thing thanks to the grand masters advise using the high density rubber mallet(from bunnings) cut in two. It's secured to the lower perch with a nut, bolt and a couple of washs. Great set up and has been fine for years.
