View Full Version : Harvey - Australia Day Long Weekend!
We just came back from Harvey with Rodgebone and a few fellow Jeepers and have decided that we will come back down here for this long weekend :) . We are going to stay down in the area and explore some more tracks. At this stage we are booked into Lake Brockman Tourist Park but we will go and bush camp (maybe Hoffman's Mill?) if there are a few people that want to come down and join us! We have the last camp spot at the Lake Brockman so that is not an option for a group camp . This is short notice but still doable........so anybody is welcome to come for the day or night or the weekend. We will be going for drives on Friday, Saturday, we might even do a run on Sunday if we are still in need of 4x4 action :)

I'm thinking about coming down, though I've never taken my Jeep off road. How hard is the track and do I need anything big in the way of recovery gear?

There are a few track around there from easy onwards :), if we get to some hard stuff and you don't feel comfortable we can improvise ;) . Do you have front and rear recovery points?

I haven't got anything done at all yet. Any ideas on where to get recovery points and where to mount them would be greatly appreciated Vman.

Thats too bad!! You know the area, right? Can you give us some ideas where we can find the FUN stuff :) ?

You have a TJ right? You can get the front and/or rear recovery points from all 4x4 shops or even Super Cheap, Auto1, Repco. They are the recovery hooks that screw in to the bumper where the stock bolts are! Very easy to do :) . Have a look and get them on there and then you are set ;)
Vic
This is what we are doing!
Staying at Hoffman's Mill (more room for camping) from Thursday night to Sunday. Turn off South West HWY onto Logue Brook Dam Rd, 10km before Harvey, and just follow the signs to Hoffman's Mill, it's past the Lake Brockman Tourist Park 18km in roughly.
At this stage we have one couple camping for the weekend more are welcome :) .
Friday drive will be departing from Hoffman's Mill 10-1030 (2 TJ's going)
Saturday same as above (3 TJ's going)
Sunday no plans at this stage
UHF 16 will be our channel
any questions call me on 0422931541 but ones we are down there the mobile is not in service all the time.

ok, being i cant go with you folks i have decided to participate in a manner which may lend some spice to your long weekend...by popular request here are 'The Rules of Engagement for Group Camping (with Jeeps)' per our first (and only hugely successful) campout together:
Rule #1: All tents must have decorative lighting of some sort. As per our last outing this added surprising ambience to the campsite when it reared its ugly head. One tent went up, then two, then another...after dusk, one of these tents had an unmistakably peculiar attachment - CHRISTMAS LIGHTS! Disturbing as this was it quickly became a hit...so all tents must have some sort of holiday theme...maybe a large aussie flag on your tent (for this long weekend?) with lights around it? or pumpkins lit up (for Halloween)...maybe a large framed and lit picture of the Queen (no, not Elton John) :toilet:
Rule #2: All participants must consume mass quantities of alcohol...just tell the campsite host to bring everyone something every 10 minutes until someone passes out....then tell him to bring something every 2 minutes until he passes out
Rule #3: After consuming mass quantities of alcohol, all participants must tell funny stories in funny voices...we wont name names here but it is sure to delight even the lesser induced
Rule #4: NO SNORING! (ok, snore, but pitch yer tent a few dozen metres away but not too far away so campfire chatters cant see your lights on your tent) we wont name names here either
Rule #5: take precautions when u turn in for the night to keep the forest furries from coming too close to camp..."Play That Funky Music White Boy" played on Vics subwoofer around 1am should do the trick...leave chips and flashlights out for snorers on midnight runs to the toilet
Rule #6: take lots of water with you...not for dehydration but rather to wake up the dead the next morning so you can have a productive day 4 wheeling...dont forget a large bucket
Rule #7: take LOTS of pictures and videos for all the sorry schmucks like myself who cant come with you!
Rule #8: HAVE FUN! :) for anyone who doesnt know us, you would be hard pressed to have a better time than with these folks - great bunch! Vic will certainly watch out for anyone who needs help or advice thru any obstacles...Personally, i could not think of a better way to spend my long weekend with my favorite people and my Jeep! so to all you Perth Jeepers - GET OUT THERE AND HAVE FUN! THIS IS AN EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITY FOR IT!
PS: if you guys do anything dangerous, ill be jealous and if anything gets broken ill be more jealous! lol, j/k
Hope you folks have the best time...do a little exploring around Fallbrook ifn yas get that way (im curious for next month or when its a bit wetter lolol) Cheers, Rodge 8-)
[IMG]Trip Report:
It was a very successful weekend!! We camped at Hoffman Mill for 3 nights. Sue and I camped on Thursday night making sure we had ample room for visitors. The camp was not too busy with toilets and running water, $6.50 per person per night but the ranger never came around!!. On the Friday morning Ken and Jude arrived and we headed straight for some tracks. 5 minutes into the track I picked up a HITCHHICKER!! One big rock inside my wheel well. Look at the pictures!!! I had to let all the air out of the tyre and then Ken oh mighty used a branch and his back to lift the front end (thanks Ken or should I say high lift Jack) We got the rock out but the damage was done…….I am in need of a new Rancho 9000 shockie!! But that wasn’t going to stop the adventure. We did some rock crawling, steep descents, BIG ruts and water crossings. We had lunch at the Harvey dam and when we pulled out we had the second accident of the day!! Ken got his rear tyre slashed!! Nice big clean cut through the side wall, he was only going 5km per hr. But like earlier in the day we fixed the problem and carried on with our day……what else can go wrong? We made it back to camp covered in dust………no fun having windows on!! But we had a surprise for our visitors a hot camp shower that we set up in our camp 8-) ……..needless to say it was a big hit. We finished the day with a few cold well needed beers it was 40C after all!
The Saturday morning we were joined by Wess (Dave and Natalie). Unloaded the Jeep and off we went. We found some very nice tracks!!!! some were a bit hairy, like one of the steepest hill climbs I have ever seen…………..even with all lockers on I just couldn’t get past the last 10meters!! :% Nothing like having to back down……..I wondered if I could do a 16 point turn? well I did but it was a bit scary. We covered 180km in two days and all of that was in the back of Harvey…………….when we started the weekend I had a few clues of where and how but now I know where to find most of the fun stuff. No damage report for the day. If you were at Harvey last weekend you know of the steep rocky descent we tackled, well we finished the weekends run by going up it!! Yes it can be done :) .Back at camp we went for a swim, first it was only going to be Dave and myself, but we were joined by the whole team in this small COLD swimming hole, nice and refreshing! Later the girls had a hot shower and the buys were happy with just the swim. After a few drinks and many stories later and we had our party shoes on……well some more then others (Ken you are one funny guy!!) :)
All and all it was a great weekend, I would say all have enjoyed themselves and we did some great 4x4. Thanks for coming guys and girls, Sue and I had a blast………….looking forward to the next trip! :)
PS: Roger we loved the rules for camping!!! We tried to use them as a guideline with a great deal of failure by all (possibly need to employ a ranger to enforce them!!!), but we will need to add one more rule!! The no dancing and singing extremely loudly out of tune rule……..no wonder the Kangaroos weren’t around!! :hammer:
I love rules!!!

ok you guys - absolutely magnificent!!! i am soooo jealous we couldnt be there....looks like a 10 out of 10 weekend! btw, that track in the vid where u decended the hill with the drain pipes laid across the road is the place i was trying to find (hope u remember where it is) - i wanna climb that again. was the mudhole still there at the bottom? also very much like the rock climbing stuff...that will be perfect for Tigger on the next outing...Vic, i think you need something less aggressive than STTs as grabbing rocks that big was not in the engineers minds when they decided to go for GRIP lol...
well done folks....we truly missed not being there...there are not too many clubs in oz that have anything on this group <proud look>
PS - Hills, you dont know what youre missin with this bunch...always room for another

What a gr8 weekend! Thanks for planning the trip Vic, some awesome tracks!
I'm having a ball out there & can't wait for the next one! When we went for a swim, some Toyota driver asked us if we ever get tired of eating dust :-o Vic and myself had a good laugh before we replied with a NO  these people will never understand!
Camping once again was a ripper, woke up the next morning with the sorest cheeks from all the laughing.
Good work with the pic's and video again Vic, I'll have to swing buy with some beers and pick up a DVD copy from you :D
Rodge, I loved 'The Rules of Engagement for Group Camping (with Jeeps)', but it needs enforcing!
Till next time :)

I am working on a DVD that will include more pictures and video combined from both weekends! If there is any footage that people have and want to contribute to the DVD let me know!
Sue wanted me to let you know that there wouldn't be enough beer at Matilda Bay
Brewery to get her to detail your Jeep or mine!!!!! :) :)

hahahahaha, I recon Sue is just a little angry because the kiwi's lost the cricket yesterday :p Besides my jeep is not that dirty :p , just have to figure out how to get the dust out of places like my radio & speedo display and also why my cd player doesn't work anymore

looks like a wicked fun trip!
I am getting lockers and ratios put into my TJ very soon, so when its done i will have to head down there with you guys to give them a bit of a workout (not that its required... just for the hell of it).
Get the dust out
Mate, if you pull the dash half off (pull the bit off up the top, and then take the centre peice off) and take to it with an air compressor, making sure the roof is down (or off). I do this with mine and it seems to go alright.
Anyhoo....
Thanks
Will
