I have been looking around for one of those tents that attach to the back of your Jeep. The Jeep branded ones from dealers are around $700, a company in SA want $1800 + (someone scrape me off the floor). Has anyone IMPORTED one from the US at all? If so, what was the postage like. Although a normal tent will do me fine, the male person is insisting on getting a 'u-beaut, hook onto the back of the Jeep' one...

give MUCANVAS a call.. they are a supporter of this site as well.
and I have had nothing but great dealings with maria and dennis.
and it could also be of interest as a new product line.

I've got an Oztrail Sportiva Peninsular which has a "4x4 docking bay". I think most (not all) of the 'Sportiva' range has a docking bay, except the 'Commune's'. Mine sleeps 9-12 in 3-4 rooms, but they do have smaller/cheaper ones as well with the docking bay. Check their website www.oztrail.com.au for the specs (the site is actually down at the moment). I paid $429 + $10 shipping online from https://www.tentworld.com.au, which is $50-$70 cheaper than anywhere else. You cant beat $10 for shipping on a 33kg tent!

Thanks guys... I may get the Pinnacle Dome from OzTrail as that is about the size I would like. Main thing I needed... to be able to stand up in it. Being tall-ish can be a PiA sometimes!

The Pinnacle is 190cm at its highest point.

Even better! I am about to order the tent and a sleeping bag.

Thanks everyone!

I opted for the Southern Cross Bus tent as I can standup in it and it goes up in about 4 minutes

I just queried the Pinnacle Dome tent by OzTrail, these tents DO NOT attach to the rear tailgate of the vehicle like the Jeep tent does. Basically, the awning goes over the tailgate on the OzTrail tents. The Jeep branded tent actually encloses around the open tailgate with elastic and velcro and you can leave the back of your Jeep open as additional storage and/or sleeping space.

This is what I am looking for:

Thanks for the help so far!

Bummer! With the Peninsular, I can back right into the Screen Room and fasten it off. The Jeep one at $279usd is not too bad considering the $usd exch rate at the moment. Freight will be deal breaker/sealer & whether they ship overseas. Might try ebay-usa.

My old job is kicking in - researcher! I have managed to locate the manufacturer of one brand out there and they happen to have a distributor here in Aust. So, after a few phone calls, I am waiting to hear back which store can offer me the best price! I have also asked a seller on E-bay to give me a shipping quote as well... fingers crossed!

Update: a Napier Sportz SUV 81000 Tent (product code 22281000) can be ordered through Auto One and Auto Barn stores. Auto One game me the price of $299, Auto Barn gave the price of $499 (go figure on the difference).

This should fit MOST Jeeps including Wrangler, Commander, Liberty, Grande Cherokee and I am sure should fit Compass.

Nice One! I'm tempted myself. I noticed you can get a full length fly fo $55usd. I would recommend, due to the waterproof rating of 1200mm of the tent itself. Most tents I have researched here in Oz, have a rating of 2000-3000mm. Although the testemonials on the website are pretty convinving. Let us know how you go.

Lets hope I can gt that out here too. I had postage quotes come back for shipping of a tent from the US.... $160 USD.... ^(*%$* for a joke!! That would have made the tent more in USD than what I can get it for in AUD.

I am just happy that I have managed to get the tent for a good price.

I don't have any but I notice that they are available from a dealer for $295 in the 'Vendor Specials' section of the forum.

There's pics there too.
