HI guys

Will be towing the caravan on holidays and have convinced the handbrake to let me buy a 12ft alum tinnie, if I fitted one of those special roof racks that mount on the roof side rails & that have guides to load/unload the boat easily. I think the roof rack cross rails are rated for 70kg max?? but I not using cross rail just side rails on WG roof that are attached to the roof at 3 points on each side not counting the rail end points. I have searched the owner’s manual & workshop CD from the USA but cannot find any specs. Also have asked the local dealer with no joy.

Or (how’s this for desperate logic) it I fitted 2 sets of cross rails does that mean I can carry 140kg ?????????????

cant see anything but gutter mount being strong enough ,metal in the roof not stiff enough/ strong to handle load like that, more cross bars will spread it better but i wouldnt put much faith in the rails that actually bolt to the roof ,well its the fixing points for these rails because metal is so thin there they can easily rip out ,especially when you have something like a tinny where a lot of the weight is a long way from those mounting points, which puts even more load on them other than actual weight.

I finally rung Jeep Australia Customer Service & got the answer but not the answer.

The official line is the roof bars are rate at 68kgs.

But that 68kg rating is for dickhead’s who will put more on the roof & then try & drive the grand around corners like a sport car & when they land on the roof, then sue Jeep.

The roof is very much stronger then the rate 68kg.

So the tinne weight 74kg (3.7m) so I won’t damage the Grand & since I have 2 tonne + of van on the back I wont be tearing around corners.
