Hi all.
Can anyone tell me what a 96/97 XJ Jeep cherokee should get per tank of fuel.
Mine sometimes gets 600km plus and then othertimes it will do 450.This seems to be doing the same driving route.

It's not your fuel. It's your odometer.
No way a stock XJ will do 600km on one tank!

(My 97 does 450.)

Well my odemeter is spot on,have checked it alot when i use my gps system on trips.
If you are correct fuel economy in your jeep is less than 7km per litre of fuel which is not right.
Alot of other forums /road tests say it should be about 10-11km per 1 litre which when mine does the 600km to a tank is pretty much spot on. And when i fill it with the low fuel warning on and have driven for maybe 50km it will always take 65l or less to fill.

Nup. Don't know what you're reading but it's wrong.
Ball park fuel consumption for a stock XJ is 14-16 litres per 100km. Mine uses 14.5l/100km except on an exclusively highway run where it can drop to around 11. This is actually on the better side of normal and within range of whatever roadtests willing to quote a comsumption figure.
Get on to the XJ forum and do a search.

If I got 500 klms out my 97 Xj I was over the moon. The best fuel ecconomy I ever got 10lt per 100klm on a trip from Brisbane to Melbourne with cruise locked in at 100klm.

Is it a petrol XJ and a stock petrol tank. Mine is and I get around 16ltr/100km which gets just over 400km per tank which is pretty normal for a 2" lift.

We have a 2" lift and 31s, we can get 11L on a long trip and around 14L (i think) just driving around. But never really more than just over 400k to a full tank. And that is calculated using the GPS because the tyres throw out the speedo.

diesel or petrol?
600 would be possible if its a diesel....

Yep I could believe that I got similar fuel consumption from my xj not long after I first bought it 11.5l per 100km. I got best economy sitting on 90kph along the hwy, I have tried many things since to try & better the fuel economy,(Finer filter, modifying & insulating air box, better muffler, boring the throttle body etc) but at the end of the day my hwy consumption is much the same 11.5 -12.5l per100km. Where I have noticed a difference is the around town economy, was getting 15-16l per 100 km now down to 13.5-14l per 100km. By the way I just did a trip to the gem fields and back (about 1100km there & back) used caltex unleaded on the way out & got 12.4l per 100km then filled up with BP 10% ethenol on the way back and only got 13.6l per 100km hwy driving. So fuel quality is another factor to consider.

Great reply NEVERMIND.
I have noticed any fuel with a ethonal blend will end up giving me less k,s per tank, why i have no idea.
looking back at when i get the 600k to a tank this is on Shell unleaded, now they have 2 unleaded fuels from what is on the pump( and i dont mean premium)From meory one is 93 and the other 95 octane rated.
i always use the cheaper one as out where i go fuel is like 1.35+
