We are are staying in Peregian beach for 2 weeks at Christmas which we're looking forward to. We're hoping to do a day trip to rainbow beach and on to Fraser Island. There are several links on this site which have come in handy. but we are taking our dog on this holiday so we need to leave him some where when we visit fraser. Are dog allowed around Rainbow??
So if someone can suggest where we can leave him for a day then that would be great as we live in Sydney and I've not been to Fraser since i took a 2 stroke 500cc Sierra there with mate many many years ago...
ok dogs are only allowed below high tide mark on the beach around rainbow as it is mostly national parks...you can camp at inskip point with dogs..
i'd do a couple days on Fraser to see everything a day trip is to short
check the yellow pages for Boarding Kennels in the area ...
but you may need to book well in advance as it holiday season
im sure there's one around Eumundi heading towards Noosa :?

I wont be camping as we're staying in Peregian Beach, If I'm not mistaken Then that means we can take the gog at any time as long as its on the beach. In other word teh National park extends only to high tide mark??? Is that right?
only allowed on northshore and rainbow below high tide mark no dogs on fraser at all !!

Next time someone's on Fraser can they get me the GPS coordinates for the entrance to Dili Village off the beach. I overshot last year and got bogged trying to get off the beach as a result (wound up out of the ruts). I'll have 5 more Jeeps behind me this Christmas, it would be good to know in advance we were getting close and we could keep an eye out for the signs a bit better. Thanks.

Bomber, this is off google earth, entrance to dilli village, you might have to fiddle with your gps to allow it to input degrees minutes and seconds, i have used google earth to find co-ord many a time with no probs whatsoever!

Hi asp777, if you are only going for a day trip to Rainbow/Fraser why can't your dog be tied up or secured in the yard at Perigian? Kyro is right 1 day is not enough to visit Fraser and just isn't worth the expense. We could lend you some camping gear if you need it. Will be in Tassie ourselves over xmas otherwise we might have looked after the dog for you. 17th Dec-5th Jan

yeah I thought about tying the little fellow up but I don't know what the property is like till we get there hopefully it will have a garden then he'll be OK for day. Camping HA! - the wife is NOT a camper but thanks for the offer. I think Fraser is going to be a 1 dayer and I think we can certainly see a fair bit. After all it's a buzz no matter what time we have on the island. I'm just worried about getting on the barge during peak school holidays late Dec to Early Jan. Do you need to book or just line up? How long you recon it'll take from peregian to the barge?
Are there any other 1 dayers around the area worth visiting that may apeal to a handbrake?
your help is appreciated

Buy your ticket at the Matilda just south of Gympie on the way up if you're heading over from Rainbow Beach, you'll save 4c a litre on your fuel there as well then. Support the Aussie barge - it's the green and gold one ;-) - not the white Chinese one. Watch tide times and you'll be right. Both companies have two barges that just run all day every day backwards and forwards, you can't book but there is rarely much of a queue. Allow an hour from Gympie to the barge (at least) so add the time from Peregian to Gympie (not sure on that leg).
Best / only time to cross is about 1 1/2 hrs either side of low tide as otherwise you have to use the inland road almost as far as Dilli Village which is not a good run, very potholed and corrugated (in fact it was so bad recently the government backed down from closing the beach run to vehicles!).
It'll cost about $75 for the barge. Say two hours from Peregian, then 1/2 queing for barge, 1/2 hour along beach to Eurong, couple of hours to pokey around that part of the island and 4-5 hours back from Eurong (low tide around new year is at approx 7.00am, so gotta go the inland route back even if you managed beach run on the way up). Lotta effort for 2-3 hours on the island as waynegler said.
If you do make the effort to go, then try and track down the MJOC cars - 6 vehicles of us arrive on the island on New Years Eve for 6 days....

Hi asp777, you should have no problems with getting on the barge cos they usually run more on the holidays, if you plan to get there about 7am, pick up your permit from the ranger station at rainbow,[you need a vehicle permit for fraser around $35]hop on the 10min barge trip and your there. You could plan on driving halfway up the island and accross, returning on the other barge which takes you to Hervey Bay then you drive home back down the highway which is quicker than driving back down the beach. That barge trip takes about 1 hr. Depends on what time you need to be home. from Perigian allow about 1 1/2 hrs to Rainbow. add another hr from Hervey Bay.
Other places you could take the handbrake that she will definatly like are the eumundi markets wed/sat, drive up into the hinterland ranges and visit Montville,[which is completely tourist orientated] and Maleny, our quaint little country town. Of course you need to go to Australia Zoo!
Noosa north shore is also a nice drive along the beach, no good for swimming as the current is usually too strong but great for fishing, stop at the Lake Coroibah pub on the way which is about 1 km from the beach entrance, and about 20 min from Perigian. I could go on but I'm sure youv'e got some brochures. Enjoy your trip. Go to Queensland Parks and Wildlife to arrange your permit www.qld.gov.au/camping , oh and if you have children do not let them anywhere near the dingos! they do stalk and bite!
