Hey guys and girls,

I'm organising a trip to the Watagans on the 25th. Only requirements are recovery points and CB. Not sure which tracks were going to take, just figure we get out there and explore.
If you have any trails you want to drive show us where they are :D

I'm in! :)

I wouldn't mind exploring some tracks starting from the RV training ground off Freemans Drive at the north end of Watagans, but no idea what those tracks will be like (and I'll need to pick up some maps too...). Happy to go along wherever though, just want to get out wheeling.

Sweet.

Yeah I need to go to the map store in town to find some maps. I had a look last time for maps around that area and the lady behind the desk ask why anyone would want to go there as there is nothing but bush and rocky "roads". So I continued to explain why I would want to drive my car in the bush and on rocky road. She didn’t understand haha. It's a Jeep thing! Hahaha

There's a good map shop in Crows Nest on Willoughby Rd (cnr Albany), I'll be heading in after work today or tomorrow morning - PM me if you want me to check if they have specific ones for you, I'll be looking at getting the 1:25,000 for the area. Also, if you don't have it already look at getting your hands on OziExplorer and the topos from that so you can check it out on the computer and the paper maps are saved for when you're out.

I'm looking for a Watagans state forest map which will show me marked, unmarked tracks or both. Will 1:25,000 be good enough? i know alot arent marked but its just to get the general idea as i dont own a GPS so if i get lost a map is my ticket out.

I'll have a poke around and see what they have. The 1:25,000 are good, only annoying thing is Watagans is over the corners of 4 of them.... will also have a quick look and see if there is a specific watagans map.

The Department of Lands Topographic and Orthophoto maps are the ones you need. The numbers are: Morisett (9131-1N), Wollombi (9132-3S), and two others which I don't have. The Morisett map will get you into the main Watagan Road and Watagan Forest Road areas and include the main campgounds. It also covers the access from the F3 up Martinsville Road. These maps are $8.75 each at any Anaconda store, and of course map specialist shops.

Wollombi won't be much use. Morrisset, Dooralong and maybe Wyong is all you'll need.

Join a club and benefit from their years of experience. The Jeep Club of NSW have been driving the Watagans for over 20 years.

You have to pay to be in a club right? I have just as much fun heading out with the crowd in this forum, plus its cheaper. I figure we'll be right.
Wolfe, is it Cherokee Club of NSW that you are talking about?

Hey Kimba, what size wheels do you have on ur JK?

Asking the difficult questions, hey... Whatever it is comes standard on the '08 JK, think they're 33's (or 32.7" according to http://www.bigcustomwheels.com/info_specs.jsp when I put in the specs....)

Got the maps and have a gps too.

Was it your jeep at OverKill last week sometime? Do you have any idea what the problem could be?

With a GPS, as long as you mark your track as you go and have the entry point saved then its not too hard to stuff up. Plus i mean, It'd be one hell of an adventure to get out if you did somehow get lost :D

I have a rough idea of the place plus we have maps. It's going to be a good trip out :)

If your gps supports basic mapping, get the free download of tracks4australia - http://www.gpsoz.com.au/tracks4australia/ or $50 for their topo version. Shonky maps is another free mapset (has topo) somewhere on here : http://www.gpsaustralia.net/ - need to register. They have most of the main roads & secondary fire trails in the Watagans. Enough to get you in, around, & out of there.

It was just getting rego sorted, which included 2 new bearings. Have yet to do a full test on the cooling system now that it's back in civilisation.

is this allright? are there bypasses? im happy to just watch you guys do the harder stuff.

Kimba
21-10-2008, 08:29 PM
I'm stock too - well, put a real front bar on it, but stock other than that. Would definitely prefer to be able to drive home at the end of the day, but a few new scars won't hurt it any. Don't have a load of experience but prepared to give most things a go...

Bolts

I'm on 35's and 3 1/2 lift, recov points + straps. I dont care what level we do, I just want to get out there and have some fun

Bolts

I dont mind body damage, i just need to drive it home like Kimba. As for trails... ruts, wombat holes, steep climbs/decents pretty much anything. Like i said, this trip was for anyone with any level of jeep.

Pezz

Pezz that'd be great if you could show us a few tracks. Are we starting at the RV training ground off Freemans Drive (north end of Watagans)? I havent entered through there before... Is there a good meeting point around there?

starter
22-10-2008, 07:31 PM
the rv track is awaba state forest... no the watto's

most of the trails i drive dont have to many side tracks or easy lines....

but i have a winch and you should all have snatch straps and recovery points

if i go.... weather permiting(as we don't want to damage the bush if it is wet) i will be heading in from the cooranbong firestation... i was planning on being there at 10am

it's up to you guys if you want to come along....
i will confirm on friday arvo if i am still going.... as i said, it comes down to mother nature for me.....

tread lightly lads....

Yeah didn’t make it out Butch. Has some issues with the jeep and once I got them sorted I figured it was a little too late to be heading out.

A lot of my jeep parts don’t have an engineer’s certificate. Do you reckon those park rangers and police would look that closely if I came across them some other time?

Butch in a Jeep
27-10-2008, 05:35 PM
No worres Bolts
We where still there to 5pm did not do much wheeling .
The Rangers and Police where ok as long as you where on a road and jeep has rego.
Thay where to busy chaseing unrego motobikes.
