Hi techo peoples, just wondering ... if you purchase a standard steel non-winch bar, how involved/difficult is it to make it into a winch capable bar?
I've looked on ebay & 4WD stores sell steel plates to attach onto the bar so am I correct in assuming that is all that is requ'd if a winch is requ'd in year/s to come?
I still don't understand the difference between a high mount & low mount winche, I just figure it has something to do with placement ... if it is simply a matter of bolting on a winch adapter plate, does that mean a high or low mount winch has to be used?
Most importantly of all, is this mod completely safe if done by someone in the know?

No, a winch bar is made to accept a winch. Non winch bar will require modification to fit a winch.
High mount see Warn winch model 8274, these mount to a bracket on top of/above the main bar. Low Mount fits inside the main bar, but can also be mounted on top, similar to high mount bracket. If you know a boilermaker or someone handy they may be able to make bracket to fit winch.

buy a winch mounting plate and get someone to weld it in and cut a hole for the wire or rope to come through and mount the fairlead and cut a hole in the top of the bar for the top of the winch to protrude through and to reach the locking mechanism .
also replace the bullbar mounting bolts with high tensile bolts .

better option may be to sell the non winch bar and buy another..........
warn bar and winch plate are very reasonably priced

Thanks, not as hard as I first thought it would seem. Shame the damn thing is way out of my price range now though.
Hollywood has the kewlest damn winch I've ever seen!!! I don't need to talk to him until he's ready to give his bar & winch away 'coz hell will freeze over b4 I can ever afford one. Hollywood is a bad influence on young impressionable girls ... telling them all about bars & winches for sale grrrrrrr.

Di why don't you buy a decent hand winch for now. It will get you out of most trouble. :)
