This is my first 4x4 and the very reason I brought a Jeep was so I could buy a standard model and the modifiy it to exactly how I wanted it.... sure it takes a lot longer but it has to be worth it in the long run.

Having bought new 4x4s not Jeeps and have it be LEMON and blow up clutches at 4000k intervals and spending 3 months off the road in 7 months I had it before they replaced it, I would build and not buy new if it was for traveling and 4x4 work but if its for the family then safety comes first.
Good luck

Buying built is gonna be cheaper. Spend up on it to your own specs and sell off whatever you dont need.

yeh, buy built, can enjoy it straight away, as you want to mod and change it, just sell the parts off as Mr EJ said.

depends what vehicle and what you want to do. If you want a bush tourer a new vehicle with a few mods would be perfect. If your after a hardcore 4wd a built one would definately be cheaper but unless you no what your looking for or know someone who does you could very easily end up with a whole catalogue of problems. I chose a new vehicle this time as i got sick of replacing stuff that was wearing out. There is no right answer to this question however it's what suits you.

If someone was looking for an oil burning JK with goodies already done, this would have to be a bloody good buy.

buy stock if you like cars and tinkering and customising and watching them develope who cares about the cost if thats your hobby......if you simply wont to drive and are not a "car" person as such then buy built saves you money and most importantly time. but it is heaps of fun getting packages in the mail of fresh bits for the car.

Actually if I had my time again i'd prob buy a semi built one, then go about replacing what I wanted...

Just because it's built it doesn't mean you can't change it to what you want .

Also means you've got parts to trade off with others :D

It's all been said, agree agree agree, buy semi built and put your stamp on it. You will save on the standard mods that everyone puts on.

if you buy a semi built/built jeep, odds are you will end up replacing a lot of the things already done anyway. Just look at MR EJ, Flexy, Ian for examples. All had built jeeps.

I think it depends on what you are after, what you intend to use the jeep for and if the modifications that have been done on the jeep are well built or not? has the work been engineered?. There is some nasty work out there and at the end of the day theres nothing like relying on your own handiwork to get you through.

Buy stock and build it. Thats where 50% of my love for 4bys is, working on mine and others. I enjoy all the researching, ordering parts, fitting them, breaking them, then fixing them....... And it's fun wasting money anyway.

Unless you have a complete build plan in place you generally end up replacing/upgrading the first mods you put in. Buying something semi built doesn't stop you modding but it may just help skip the first round of spending leaving more money for the bits you really wanted. But I also agree with Wolfe's points on quality.

buy built and then build more... you wont see much of a price difference between a stock tj and a semi built TJ... definately buy built... with the money you save on suspension, sye, tyres, etc etc you could buy a pair of d60's or an atlas...

Dont know if your still looking for one but have you considered a stock jk rubi. I just bought a 07, 15000kms with warn front and rear bars for 29990. Has the benefit of factory lockers swabar disconnects and new car warranty.
