Just wanting to get on top of some maintenance bits on the jeep that are probably long overdue. '96 build year XJ, auto, with 240xxx km on the clock.

I've had it for 3 years and I know the only maintenance done on it while I've had it is oil changes and fixing up a leaky transmission oil cooler connector (this was before I started doing my own work and researching forums, lesson learned because the bastards only did the standard cut and hose clamp fix anyways, but still managed to charge me 300 bucks).

What should I be doing?

My current list includes greasing everything with a grease fitting on it (what kind of grease, can I get away using a all purpose like a valvoline Valplex M?)

Should I be changing:

the diff fluids, front & rear?
transfer case fluid?
transmission fluid?
oil pan filter & gasket?

greasing the slip yokes for the front & rear?
replace radiator hoses?
replace serpentine belt?

other random one I can think of is replace the transfer case mount

Just need a good starting point on things that I probably should have been doing anyways.

Change and sevice all that you've wrote, pluss: sparks, leads, dizzy cap, dizzy point, engine-oil and give the radiator a good flush!!

Hope it helps. :)

Engine Bay? Check the condition of the serpentine belt.... very important...

Other: Check the suspension - and or upgrade it..

Dont forget the fuel-filter!

Run some injector-cleaner too.

Change the power steering fluid? A filter for it is a good idea as well...

Flush old brake fluid with new. It absorbs moisture and over the years would have degraded some.

have done the fuel filter and injector cleaner already. cheers guys, belt looks good and hoses feel fine but I know they're at least a few years old, should I just go ahead and replace and keep the olds as spares? also, how much of PITA is it to change the thermostat?

Clean the throttle body and idle air controller and make sure the PCV fittings/lines in the rocker cover aren't blocked up with crud.

easyist thing to do is drive it to your local jeep dealer, test drive a new grand cheerokee, leave the xj behind and drive the grand home.... lol... wish we all had the money to actually do that dont ya?

Hmm maybe not the grand cherokee, i'd rather a second hand range rover for the same money (yeah i know...). I wouldn't mind a jk unlimited rubicon tho!

Hey guys, So I have recently got my P's this year, got a 96 xj and I love it =D. Since having my P's though I haven't taken it in for a service yet, and I feel its overdue for one. Does anyone know of a good place for me to take it? I live in Brisbane-Logan area.

Thanks heaps

Could anyone recommend a good servicing manual? I looked at the one available on rock auto.

Any local ones perhaps?

Edit - Just found this free one for a 2000 Cherok, same same?
