Might be over compensating for something:( , but plan on building a comp truck similar to this.

I know it's been done, but that gives me the confidence, knowing it worked.
Got some major bits already including the Rockwells and 49" Irocs.

As far as I know Iroks are ex Pete Antunac's 40 series, got them off Chris at Ragged Edge.
Paying for them was a little painful, wife hasn't forgiven me yet.
Will try to put something up every week.
What do people think of using this? http://www.camowraps.com/
Just something different as a lot of comp trucks have already been done in wild colours these days and I'm not into shiny paint but not sure about using olive drab either?
Hell yeah Dude, This build is gonna be SICK!!
So what are the plans? engine, gearbox, Xfer etc?
And get some pics up of those diffs!!!!! Where'd you get em from? I bet they weren't cheap!!

Using Amc 360, turbo 400 and quad trac transfer with part time conversion, this will feed a 2nd divorce transfer, not sure what but might be this

You know you've got too much crap when you have to move 3 unused diffs just to get to these!
http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=35758&stc=1&d=1254219374
So now I can at least get to them the bottom one will be coming apart soon to have an air locker fitted.
A lot of people think these diffs only have pinion brakes but they actually have big drum brakes standard. Pinion brakes are an after market product and are generally used to save weight. The pinion is the same at either end. You can see the bottom diff centre has been spun 180 degrees on the housing making it almost a centre drive, the top one is unmodified giving a driver side offset.
Stay tuned.

Divorced Np205?
Spinning the rear centre around, will that affect the rotation of the wheels?Hope not, I think the tailshaft that drives it would have to turn the other way to be a problem.
The plan was to use a divorce 205 but this came up for a hundred bucks. It's out of a D1610 International truck and should be strong?
Bogged
30-09-2009, 07:01 PM
Might want to check the rotations before you bolt them up and shorten your wheelbase or pull the jeep apart! lol
The 205 should be plenty strong, but then again, the IH box is a decent enough find to warrant that. OR, divorce 205, divorce IH box THEN your driveshafts!!!

Other commitments mean not much happening this month, but I did get the transfer case shown earlier.
Happy that low range seems about what I had hoped at around 2:1.
This will work out well giving 2:1, 2.57:1 or 5.14:1.
The plan is to use the factory 360/T400/quad trac. The quad trac has a part time conversion. The rear output of the quad trac will drive the big divorce Inter transfer. The front output of the quaddy won't be used unless space allows it's use as a PTO drive for a winch.

Update time. Been working on a non Jeep project I promised my wife would be done by Christmas, so now it's done it's all systems go again.
I've pulled down what will be the front diff and it is booked in to have an air locker fitted on Monday the 11th.
Took a couple of pics to try and show that size really does matter.

http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37927&stc=1&d=1265028196
The cats name is CJ, he's getting a bit old and has lost a bit of weight and is just under 8kg now (we already had him). The high clearance Rockwell skid, two of which arrived today, is over 9.5 kg.
http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=37928&stc=1&d=1265028450
This is what they will look like when fitted soon. The diff is upside down here, you are looking at the bottom.
While I had the scales out I was curious to know how heavy the wheels and tyres are. 108kg each.

Put the bong down and concentrate on building it, not putting a dress on it.

Brakes have arrived. They are from Ouverson Engineering in the US and are very nicely done. Kit includes Wilwood 4 piston caliper, laser cut caliper bracket and disc rotor that is machined to index onto the drive flange.
http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=38619&stc=1&d=1267667347
The plan at this stage is both brakes will be mounted between the flange and the front and rear drive shafts.

Hate to make excuses but I'm going to anyway.:(
I did a number on my CJ8 at Coffs and broke lots of stuff. I've also got 4 rego's to pay for from May to August so this has slowed me up a bit.
What has happened is I've got a few more parts so when I get my finger out and get stuck into the build it should make quick progress.
The latest bits I have are a spool for the rear, some stronger axles that will go in the rear and give me the originals as a spare set, some new unis and some other little bits like seals.
Hopeing the dollar comes up again so I can order the hydrolics for the steering next.
The best I can do at the moment is put up some pics of the new bits.
The plan is to be able to drive it by the end of the year. So thanks for the interest and keep up me.:hammer:

I'm back . The clock is ticking so it's time to get this thing happening. Although it might not look like much has happened, the front diff is pretty much together. It took 3 thin cutting discs to get the bottom off the diff.
http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=43359&stc=1&d=1287918654
The high clearance cover is on, air locker and diff centre bolted in, spring perches tacked in position and high steer arm bolted on. Axles are in and hubs fitted up.
http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=43360&stc=1&d=1287918654
The hubs were a pain and everything you do on this thing is heavy. As all the studs had to come out and go in the other way around so I could flip the hub around the way they are originally. Rockwell hubs can be flipped to give a narrower distance between WMS. Took a while to sort out wheel studs and nuts, half are left hand thread and I'm still a left and right hand stud short for the rear. Not the easiest thing to find. Hydro steering bits are on the way from the US. The springs are ready to go and I hope to start on the rear diff some time this week. Will keep you posted.

If you are going to compete you really really want the ability to front dig in something this big!
I would also look at using ORI struts (http://oristruts.com/products/shocksstruts/dp3-strut/) instead of leaf springs but they might be blowing the budget?
Check out pirate4x4 for hardcore tech (http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/)

You got it Zac, the ORI struts would blow the budget. Do you remember a red CJ8 with leaf springs driving a step that a certain TJ (coil springs) had to winch up at Jambo 2002 :p. Leaf spring are a good match for my suspension engineering skills.

I like the way the guards are too but will have to do a bit more chopping yet. Will try to keep the same profile just take more out of the front, top and rear and probably some out of the front apron.

This shows how close things are, but in this photo the wheels are flipped in. I will be running them flipped out and get about 100mm extra clearance.

are you going to tie some rails along the front guards into a stinger? or some sort of tube bar?
think it would finnish it off nicely

We have picked up the front on a fork lift and it still needs some manipulating ;) with the angle grinder. Limited up travel in the front with bump stops today. Will try front flex after guards are cut in a couple of days.

I've got Richo's front bar but it will need some mods to fit. Want to put a stinger on it too but might run out of time, we'll see.

We finished 3rd, only problem it was 3rd last :(.
The Rockwell and most of the Jeep parts held up ok, it was the Nissan junk that really let us down.
On Friday night the front assist ram destroyed the tie rod. We fitted the spare and made some adjustments to how the ram was set up with no further problems in that area.
Saturday was Jaw Breaker first up and a front Nissan uni broke way too easily and very early on the stage. Navi said do you want to call it, I said lets try for some points, we got a bit further in 2wd and the rear uni gave up and ended up with minus 5 for the stage .
We replaced the unis and went out on Devils Marbles and snapped a front main leaf. We welded up the leaf so we could have a go at the mud run but the wombat holes at the start of the mud run were too much for the leaf and it let go again, but not at the weld this time, and we lost front drive as well.
Still had a great time though, the team worked hard to keep us out there, we learn't heaps about what needs up grading and the truck attracted plenty of attention which I hope was good for my sponsors.
I'll get some pics up of the broken bits soon, you wont believe what that front diff did to a J20 spring.
Bring on 2012.

Sorry I don't have many action shots because I was either driving it or fixing it. Mostly fixing it though.

You can get a few quick video glimpses of it on the 2011 Tuff Truck DVD.
If you can track down 4WD Custom Utes issue 15 there are a few shot as well. I'm waiting for the promised disc of the photos from the custom utes storey but have been waiting for a long time now :hump:.
As a bit of an update, we are entered again for 2012 and will be making a few changes. The main one being a divorce NP205 which will also allow me to beef up the drive shafts. Planning some traction bars to stop the axles wrapping as well.

Just about got the NP205 transfer case mounted up and doing some research on twin sticking it so I can get low range front wheel drive:D. Pick up new rear drive shaft with 1480/1550 unis on Friday, this should resolve last years breaking uni's problem.
Done a shackle reversal on the front springs to try and overcome breaking springs.
Hope to do some testing towards the end of the month. Not sure why I leave it to the last minute:confused:, maybe I like the adrenalin caused by panic. We'll get there though;).

Anything bigger than a 1410 won't fit on the commonly available flanges to suit the transfer case so this is what limits things a bit. You can get a 1410 bolt pattern yoke that will fit the transfer case that takes a 1480 joint so that's the way we are going. The other issue is actually fitting anything bigger in the space available, a 1550 is pushing things, but we used them at the diffs because that is the size flange the Rockwells have and space isn't such an issue at the diffs. The tube diameter is also relative to the uni size to a certain extent, I am trying to fit 3 drive shafts, two transfer cases, a V8 exhaust, hydraulic hoses, and pipe work to the rear mounted radiator all between the chassis rails of a J10 you know **).
Just remembered, there will also be a couple of traction bars in there somewhere :wall:.

Truck exhaust stacks!
Or even better: hot rod stacks out the hood!
wee doggie

The exhaust is set up like a stak already, I don't think the hot rod stack out the hood would pass scrutineering, probably excessively noisey, otherwise I might consider it.

Update time.
Got back from Tuff Truck after dark last night and the only repair we made all weekend was to the trailer which snapped a stub axle about 25ks from the event, in a place called Broke:rolleyes:.
We drove to and off every stage, without being rescued by the manitou once:D.
Finished 28th out of 59, came 25th on the ramp with a score of 1050 on leaf springs:monkey:, completed the Mud Run and Devils Marbles and drove to the 100 point mark on All Terrain Challenge.
All in all a very satisfying result and already thinking about how to improve on this for next year.

Hi Dave, that must have been when I was taking a look at the other competitors, I didn't know it was offered to us but am guessing it wasn't a freebee either. Coincidently I just got off the phone with my navi and he said something about someone suggesting we should have a camera on the truck. Maybe next time.
Thanks,

Yeah, we've entered again this year.
I took the truck out on the social weekend held at the Tuff Truck site in December and gave it a real good work out. So now we have some repairs to make plus the never ending list of modifications. Work on the truck will start in the next week or so and I'll be at it untill Tuff Truck in April, will keep you all posted.

3 things, cost, technical ability:% and they are what I had laying around. This thing was suppose to be a relatively low cost build :(. We would have had at least a half dozen mods to the leaf suspension so far in an attempt to keep it reliable (we got through the whole event last year with no breakage :D). I would hate to think what it would take and cost to get a link suspension to work and be reliable when we started with a leaf sprung truck. It would have been a different story if we had started with coils. Also when links break they usually take out other expensive componets too. Plus I built it myself, I didn't pay people to build it, so I went with what I knew should work while staying within my own technical abilities. We do ramp better than half the field with our leaf springs :hump:.

Yes they did make the tracks wider this year because we were there. I guess this worked in our favour because we got more points this year than last year but we finished 40th as against 28th last year. We stuffed up on two stages and went real well on a few, we only made one repair all weekend. There were definately some positives to come out of the weekend but saying that I am still a little disapointed with the result. Maybe I'm just hard to please. But in my mind there is no denying it's a TUFF TRUCK, in two years competing we adjusted a power steering belt and repaired a bent hydraulic fitting :D It's is too wide :( but the changes made this year definately got us some much needed manoeuvrability. More mods to make the truck more competitive have already been discussed :hammer:
Anyone got footage of my wheelie in the mud run?
