Hello all.. Just picked up my 2007 Commander & sadly leaving the XJ forum. Really felt I had to upgrade ride and handling as well as I needed a bigger engine to tow a boat. I've been playing in the car tonight and just about to sit down with the manual. I'll have many questions I guess? ok to be rude to me if needed but gently...so far pretty impressed with it....

I hope not.... bit disappointed with the rear crappy plastic bar however...it’s loose and I can pull it up and down half an inch. Had a quick look underneath and it appears to be just clipped to the mudguard moulds / wheel arches with plastic press-studs and a few bolts in the centre…. I wonder is this common?

Congratulations for the upgrade. I would never trade my XJ or give it away, until death do us part, but I am familiar with the rear bumper of the XJ and it is a true bumper, bolted on like a bumper should.

However, the Commander is a beaut vehicle.

What is in your engine bay?

Yeah happy so far.... have you seen my post *Any one actually try this?* wondering if they all do this. Annoys me that the aircon comes on in every position bar two.... When in the floor position the air compressor will be running but no light on the button aluminates? Apparently this is how they're designed....:wall: I think its stupid....its supposed to keep the aircon in good nick during the winter months however it puts the fuel usage up....

Yeah i`ve seen the issue with the air-con on the US forums , is stupid idea in thinking , but that`s engineers for u , i`ve worked in the car industry for 15 years , lol .
Buy the way be-aware that dealers in OZ are not stocking Mobil 1 ESP anymore , they are now using Castrol SLX PRO , for which Merc Benz only recommend mobil .

3 reasons for this is

1/ when the oil is warm/hot the viscosity of the castrol is thiner than the Mobil 1 , so when your engine is working hard there is not enough of oil in the pick up of the sump , in turn damaged end bearings , found this out after lots of phone calls to MB & Chysler jeep & info on the net .

2/ they get kickbacks from Mobil of course ( MB ) .

3/ Mobil 1 ESP & castrol SLX pro & both fully synthectic 5W - 30W , Mobil is dearer & better kms per tank , castrol cheaper & heavier on fuel kms, drinks 10% more fuel plus runs louder , have found this out from the dealer not telling me they put castrol in mine not mobil .Went back & demanded they put Mobil 1 ESP back in , now engine runs quieter & smoother may cost a little more , but rather that than an engine rebuild , now that my warranty has run out ,& only done 68,000km

Cheers

The Commander has a D.P.filter therefore requires a C3 compliant oil. From the enquiries I have done Fuch and Shell also produce a full synthetic 5w/40 C3 oil. Have you tried one of them?:?:

When I last checked with Mobil, you could still get Mobil 1 ESP but you have to b a 20L drum

I'm in the process of getting some Mobil1 5W-30 ESP. In Oz, it's only available as a 20L drum ($225) or box of 12 x 1L bottles. The Mobil lubeline tech said that they are trying to get the 5L bottle in. Atm, easiest place to get is Petrogas distributors or Repco store. (Repco quoted $430!)

If you can buy a 20l drum of mobil 1 ESP for that price , get it straight away , for 5 lt bottles is about $80 , hard to find .

To 08 CRD if u want to use other oil than Mobil 1 ESP then get samples & get them tested along with some mobil then this will tell u if their suitable or not for this Engine & then u can decide . See post i put on the US site, Below !

3.0Lt CRD oil
Please do not use any other oil other than MB specs . Have a CRD 3.0Lt , I am from Australia . Had this same issue here with oil Specs & MB codes MB229.31 & MB 229.51 . MB 229.51 is the update to MB 229.31 for the CRD . MB 229.51 is for 2008 to current . I spoke with MB techs here after Chrysler Jeep service & Techs had no clue , & Spoke to head office in OZ MB techs said use 5W-30W low ash oil only as when car is on cold start & then hot leaves enough oil in crankcase for lubrication . Plus MB only recommend Mobil 1 ESP for their CRD`s . it might cost a little extra for servicing , but better than bottom end of the motor shot to bits . My best mate has a 2006 GC 5.7 hemi , Chrysler Jeep service put castrol magnatec 10W -30W the car started running rough after start up for 5 minutes then drove down the road for 1/4 mile then stopped dead , all lights came on in the dash , result = the whole bottom end **** it-self
all end bearings gone , warped heads , the lot , he is still waiting after 10 weeks to get a new motor sent from the states US . That`s why i`m sticking to MB specs , Mobil 1 ESP for me , might be a little more $$ but better than my mates GC , any questions i can answer , anytime , Aussy Commander . (http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/report.php?p=8830758) (http://www.jeepforum.com/reporting/vote.php?vote=down&postid=8830758) (http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=8830758)

Hi Aussie_Commander,
As you say it is imperative with these new diesels to use the correct oil. The main problem is the diesel particulate filter if you use an oil that is not ACEA C3 compliant you will stuff up your particulate filter. As these have platinum as one of the main catalysts and it costs approx US $1500 a pound they are a fairly expensive item. The viscosity eg 0w/30, 5w/30 or 5w/40 is probably more important in relation to where you live e.g Darwin or the Snowy mountains in winter. As long as the oil is fully synthetic ACEA C3 and meets either VW 507.1, BMW LL_04 or MB 229.51 the choice of brand should be just personal preference.
