so you are looking at a JK ?
What type of Jeep are you looking at?
I have a JK SWB wrangler. The Rubicon only comes in Petrol.
Since I have had the car (March 2009) , it has averaged 14.3L/100Kms.
If the Rubicon came in Diesel, I would have gone for that.

not sure if i want the long or short wheel base really. just looking at a newby at thought the extra torque of the diesel would be handy. do many people sturggle with fitting their families into the short wheel base ? i know in the next 2 years kids will be an addition.

I'd suggest the JK Unlimited CRD. Massive torque, resonable ecomony compared to the petrol, and they crawl really well. If you get the ORG (Off Road Group) option you get some of the Renegade goodies.
The 2dr will be a squeeze for kids.
My diesel has been averaging 12L/100km at the moment but its only got 6000km on it and thats all city driving too. I don't know of a single petrol JK driver who does the same sort of driving I do and gets less than 15L/100km on a regular basis (mainly around the city/suburbs)
On the highway the diesel and petrols fuel economy can be quite similar, until you load them up then the petrol starts chewing it again. If i do alot of highway driving or very gentle suburban driving I can keep the figures to around 10L/100k. At night often less. I've observed that the average economy gauge in cluster is a bit optimistic, usually by about 1L/100km.
The way i see it, the diesel offers consistent economy.
And if you get the auto diesel (which you should as the manual gearbox is crapola and the clutch stinks) it has diff munching torques. Both engines aren't in their prime until after their first service, so i'd suggest test driving some used examples to get a feel for how they drive rather than brand new.
Brand new neither engine feels like they will pull the skin off a custard pudding.

I've got a 2dr manual petrol and I drive the city (well spring hill), suburbs and the south east freeway carpark most mornings and nights with 25K on the clock. Get around 12.5 - 13.5 L/100km with the rag top and 12 - 12.5 with the hard top.

Mate, get one of these Diesel (CRD) 3L V6 Mercedes Benz engine, 160Kw of power, an impressive 510Nm of torque and Quadtrack 2 transmission.
At 10.8L/100km its not the most economical, BUT it will go anywhere, mine has been up the OTL, it has arguably the best 4WD system in the business.
One of the motoring magazines had an article entitled "there's nothing wrong with a stock standard GC" that pitted a Laredo against the opposition which resulted in some very surprised Toyota and Nissan owners!
As a tow vehicle it is brilliant, many correspondents to this forum like me have purchased them exactly for that and have smiles on their dials all day!
I have also owned a KJ and as a shorter wheelbased vehicle it was an excellet unit as well with its 2.8L 4Cylinder CRD - and you get a very smart interior in Limited guise!

dont get the 2 door if you have kids....trying to fit 3 of us in the 2dr along with holiday/capming gear is a tight fit, if i had my time again id get the 4 door for practicality....but lets be honest, wranglers were never meant to be practical....id still stick with the petrol though....only cos thats the only option for the rubi

Get the unlimited CRD with the offroad group option... You will have the flexibility later when the little ones arrive

Sorry but ....
Stuff the kids .... lol ...
Jeeps are two doors with no roof at least a 2-3"lift and min 33's ....
(Just kidding), I can understand why some will pref 4 doors.
petrol or diesel ... my choice is petrol ... life of the jeep verses extra cost for engine, fuel and servicing over 5 years @ $5-6K easy ... that buy's alot of petrol or more mods...
Unless you intend on more than 50kmpa and or towing heaps ...
I like the Diesel in the 5 speed auto and rear dana 44, but I love the Rubi and that only comes in a petrol, so that's what i got!
