Maybe a silly question - but if you trim the upper ball joint 'bolt/stud' in order to fit larger tyres - does this make future steering knuckle removal/installation harder?

The bit you trim off is the bit that you hold with a shifter to stop the UBJ stud rotating when you tighten the UBJ nut. I suppose you could somehow clamp the UBJ into the knuckle to get the wedge fit, or hold the remainder of the stud with vise-grips, but then you'd stuff the thread up.

Any thoughts on this?

I have trimmed mine and I will be puting a lift kit in later this year. I am going to use a rattle gun to loosen and tighten the ball joint bolt. I find the rattle gun takes up the thread fast and will seat the taper before it spins. if this is not the case I will grind flat sides on the bolt or cut a notch in the bolt so I can hold it with a screwdriver.
