Well after many years of looking at the yanks putting Hemi’s in their JK’s the time has finally come for my Hemi JK to be built:D. Here’s the current status and plan forward.
I have ordered a RHD hemi installation kit from Burnsville Offroad and after a big night of drinking somehow decided that the budget could stretch far enough that I have ordered the 6.4ltr VVT MDS hemi v8 with over 500hp. I believe this is the new engine going into the SRT vehicles later this year.
I still need to confirm details on the engine fit out components and the transmission but I have now received pricing back from Jeep Australia and by the end of next week I will know whether I’m purchasing these parts from Burnsville Offroad or from Jeep. Jeep are currently much more expensive but have offered to negotiate pricing. It helps when you have a mate as a parts manager for a dealership. Some of you may also be glad to know that all the parts required for the engine build out have now been included into Jeep Australia’s ordering system so this will make it easier in the future although out of 40 odd parts they only have 8 in Aus. Once the build out items are finalised it’s then just a matter of paying the cash and my shipping agent will pick up the items the week later and get them moving to Perth.
If anyone has any information on importing the engine and parts and recommendation’s especially regarding the import duties then please let me know as this is still a bit of a grey area.
The current build plan is now going to be scheduled in at least 2 stages with the first stage being the Engine and transmission upgrade only. Stage 2 will need to include items such as axles, tyres, new rims if required, drive shafts and hopefully transfer case if the budget permits. The reason for this is simply to do with licencing here in W.A. I believe it is going to be much easier getting the V8 passed if the vehicle is closer to stock so at the moment that’s the way it will stay. Once the hemi has been passed then the other upgraded will commence. I currently have a permit to modify approved for a 6.1 hemi but will need to now change this to the 6.4 hemi and hopefully there shouldn’t be any problems with that. The 6.1 hemi was originally my first pick prior the back prior to the VVT kits being available and I’m informed that it does not fit well in the RHD JK’s.
The engine conversion will be conducted by myself and as many volunteers as possible to get it done and will more than likely be conducted over 2 to 3 big weekends at my home down near Bunbury. I’m planning on removing the body from the chassis to make the install easier. I might take this opportunity to remove the interior from the Jeep and have the interior tub coated with Linex. I have had the Linex installed on my TJ and have never looked back.
The final build out once complete should be something like the following list.
There will be many more small items added and due to budge restrictions this could take a while
37” Wrangler MTR’s with Kevlar for street tyre.
40” TBA for offroad use.
Low Center of Gravity. Hoping to stick with the existing OME lift for now.
Dana 60 (or equivalent) rear axle with ARB air locker
Dane 60 (or equivalent) front axle with ARB air locker. I may substitute this for a 44 running RCV axle’s to save some coin. This will mean I can run stock bolt patter wheels.
DBOR Matt Back flat fender flares – Ordered and should arrive next week.
Kaymar Rear bar to be replaced due to not being compatible with 37” tyres. This is a great rear bar and if anyone is interested please make me an offer. I’m currently looking at a HD Customs switchblade rear bumper with the switchblade drop down tyre carrier but this is not yet confirmed.
I need to replace my front ARB bumper due to a little incident with the rear end of a Mercedes. This will be done by the insurance but I haven’t decided on a front bumper yet.
Atlas 4 Speed transfer case (budget permitting and not looking good at the moment)
Snorkel (TBA)
Rocker guards
Linex Interior
Heat reduction hoods
I have a few things to clarify and decide on and maybe some of you can give me some suggestions. The main ones are.
How to physically lift the body of the chassis.
I need a good welder to weld in the engine and transmission mounts for me. Anyone offering?
Any suggestions on axles?
Any suggestions as to where the cheapest place in Perth to buy the Wrangler MTR with Kevlar tyres is
Any licencing issues for W.A or any way to get 37’s passed?
Any other feedback or suggestions would really be appreciated.

1 . with a 2 post hoist or a group of mates a a 2 post hoist is better though .
2 . murray
3 . rock jock dana 60s or currie housings with true high 9s
4. is there any such thing as cheap tyres in wa . but try beaurepaires as they are owned by goodyear
5. if you buy curries or dynatrac,s or what ever custom diff ask the manufacturer for a letter stating that the diffs and brakes have been built for use with 37 inch tyres .
my questions are
can you register a vehicle with a motor that has not been adr complianced in australia ?
how much of the car do you think will handle 500hp ?
are you laminating the chassis ?
what are you going about brakes ?
do you think an atlas 4 speed will handle 500hp ?
do you really think this conversion is possible in a few weekends ?
how long do you think the stock diffs and transfer case will handle 500hp ?
Cant wait. Awesome build project.
Heard a lot of good things on new improved Bor hemi kit with new engine mounts where u dont have to cut the stock engine mounts.
By the jeepkonnection as we speak are doing thier first aev RHD conversion and they are almost complete.
Dont go with 4 speed atlas they have major issues i dont think they are selling 4 speed boxes for jk hemi conversions. Stick to old trusty 2 speed.
Anyway you go get the the video camera ready and record every bit of the conversion. Maybe start a sticky jk build prokect and keep us posted
Try carsales online u can get a 545rfe transnission second hand with few ks cheaper and engine also.
Do u know 6l or above hemi dont have a computer calibrations done right till date and 5.7 is producing the same power as 6l hemis bec of computer calibration even aev cant get it right despite working directly with chrysler so do some more research
Pm me if you need more info i have done a lot of research and have good contacts

Just a thought, with the increase in power, the increase in weight and the increase in tyre diameter, wont the brakes need upgrading as well to pass engineering?
With the initial build keeping everything else stock I would also think will go against you in engineering, as I would not have thought the stock axles etc were designed with the power output of the 6.4L hemi... :)
I would be finding yourself an engineer now, and become a very good friend of his and ask him what he needs you to do to make it pass. My brother does a lot of upgrades and runs the mods past the engineer first, bouncing ideas back and forth until its all designed, then goes and builds it (last build he did was a holden 253 and 5 speed into a shorty patrol with a 6 inch lift. He was told it couldnt be done, after driving it up the trails and using it as a beach recovery vehicle for a while he ended up with a few orders !! :)
Very interested in watching this one!

Not 100% sure on W.A. rules regarding ADR. I spoke to the licencing department and they didn't advise it would be a problem.
The 6.4's are being used elswhere with this engine without a problem so i cant see why the Aus JK couldn't handle the power
The brakes will be looked at with the axle upgrade. It may all be done as part of the engine conversion depending on outcomes.
Will seee what the new Atlas 4 speed new design version comes out with once they release it.
The comversion is meant to take aprox 40 hours. I will have everything setup ready to go before hand and expect that the setting up and checking of everything will take an extra weekend.
The stock diffs and transfer case will last long enough until I can get the axles sorted out. I just need to be nice on the right pedal.

After speaking to Dan at Burnsville I wont be using the new engine mounts as they make the engine sit higher in the engine bay. The weld in mounts are better for the cooling system.
I have been speaking to jeep Konnection on a regular basis since mid Febuary and as there kit has taken much longer than expected I am now going down this path. The last update from them was not as possitive as I would have liked with lead times as they are doing everything possible to make sure its a great kit with no problems. I still hope to continue some of my other plans through them though such as the axles as they have been very good to deal with.
I have been monitoring the atlas 4 speed with caution due to the problems. Will wait and see what happens but not rushing into buying one.
I will be buying the engine through burnsville to ensure it fits the RHD. For the sake of a few extra $$$ i will get the transmission new just to be on the safe side.
The engine programming is now sorted out for the 5.7vvt and the 6.4 also. From my understanding AEV have manifold routing issues with there kit and the 6/1ltr hemi. I believe they also have programming for the 6.1 now.

Correct in regards to the weight and tyre diameter. This is one reason that I'm going to keep the stock tyres for the licencing. Still to be confirmed if I can get it over the pits with the stock brakes but initial indications are that it should be ok. If not the plan is to have the new axles and brakes by that time anyway
Not to sure if the engineers look at the torque rating of the stock engine to see if they are suitable. maybe someone can answer this?
If someone can point me in the right direction of an enginner familiar with W.A. rules that would be appreciated.

just a quick thought into the heat reduction hoods, you could save a few $$$ and go a few vents in the bonnet in places that will allow the most airflow in and out. if it doesnt work then the heat reduction hood is still an option and you havnt wasted to much, if it does work you've saved a bit:)

Just an update on the engineering. I have know spoken to 2 different approved engineers in Perth and they have both advised that in principle there should not be any problems with the 6.4 hemi being approved. There is a recommended limit on the maximum size of the engine for the weight of the vehicle and the calculation is original tare weight x 5cc's meaning that with a tare weight of circa 1900 the maximum engine size is 9.5ltr. The engineers have also confirmed the 2 stage approach of getting the engine approved and then doing the axles and brakes etc is the best way forward. There are no disadvantages to this approach and as the braking system is already approved there should not be a requirement to do any tests on the brakes as all the tests that are conducted on the braking system do not have any load applied by the engine so its pointless to retest the brakes after the engine upgrade as there is no difference to with the exception of the minimal extra weight added by the bigger engine.
The way forward is to complete a new permit to modify for the engine and transmission only. This application should then get approved in principal and once done the engine conversion will then be completed and then inspected by the engineer who has advised he doesn't see there being any problems. Part of the inspection will be a noise test on the exhaust and possibly but not confirmed an emissions test. The axles will need to be approved to handle the extra power but as its unlikely that any data can be easily obtained on the existing axles then a risk assessment should suffice and as the consequences of a broken axle shaft are not dangerous then the engineer will accept them as suitable.
As there now seems to be no show stopping engineering issues its now full steam ahead.
So now for the decisions. After speaking to Jeep Australia I will now be purchasing all the items from Burnsville Offroad as Jeep Australia cant reduce there pricing enough to get it even remotely close to make it worth while to get them locally. To give you all an idea the transmission is $2700USD compared to $6000AUD.
I am now speaking to Jeep Konection seriously regarding the axles and have a few options to choose from. I had previously spoken to a few other Australian venders but with the exception of Solid Axles no one had come up with a complete package that they could offer. If there are any other venders out there that can offer a complete axle package then please PM me or if anyone has any suggestions then please advise. I want to use as many Aus suppliers as possible as I strongly believe in supporting the Aus Jeep community.

Hi there Glen,
Your build sounds awesome, the stuff JK dreams are made of! I just wanted to inform you of a few ongoing issues my best mates 7lt JK has had since he started the build.
1. Broke New Atlas 4 Speed in 2 - it cannot handle the torque of the 7lt and wouldnt really cope with a 6.1lt given the big tyres, ratios and huge extra vehicle weight.
2. 2 Broken (throw away) NEW 545RFE Trannys. They cant handle the torque of the 6.1's or 7lts again with all the extra diff work, extra ratio's and vehicle weight.
This seems to be the achilies heel of the conversion process. The 5.7's dont have an issue and dont seem to cook transmissions unless your "Duning" on sand for prolonged periods of time and a heavy right foot.
From what I can gather and hypothesise on is the W5A580 Merc Tranny found behind the WH CRD's and WH SRT8's is what needs to be included in the equasion. They are designed as an Merc High Performance AMG box - rated my Mercedes to 788Nm of Torque. I've never seen or heard of anyone doing it but that doesnt mean it cant be done.
I'm really interested in seeing how you go. The transmission issue is the big one.
Good luck!

CRDSTU, Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it
What did your mate end up changing to. I assume a Atlas 2 for the transfer case but what about the transmission?
I've spoken to Dan McKeag from Burnsville offroad about this and he offered a Heavy Duty 545RFE transmission. To be honest I don't know exactly whats been upgraded in this transmission but its sounded good when he talked about it and at half the price of the transmission from Jeep Australia its worth a shot. The other part of the need to use this transmission is for it to work with the MDS in the 6.4 hemi allowing it to drop down to 4 cylinders when I'm being nice to it.
I know quite some time ago AEV were talking about doing the W5A580 transmission for there 6.1 conversions and last I read it was due to be released in January this year which hasn't happened. I believe its not a simple install and requires a new housing to be built for the transmission or part of it. If you search through all the posts on AEV's forum you may find it.

Hi Glen, no probs. I'm not sure how much info I should lead on here but my mate is also speaking with Dan and his off sider at the moment trying to come up with a solution. The simple fact is the 545RFE isnt strong enough to handle the constant torque being put through it with that kind of weight to push. 2 Auto Tranny specialists have looked at the cooked boxes and said they never would have handled the power or weight in the 1st place and shouldnt have been used.....why do you thing BOR / AEV are looking at the W5A580 box now? Because action needs to be taken to clear their name!!
Same with the Atlas people, they put their hands up and said - sorry, cant help you there with that weight and power, the 2 speed is the only box for the job........so he was given a replacement 2 speed.
Just going back on that box issue, my mate was also told that the replacment (2nd ) box coming out to him was a you beaut super duper drag spec box. I drove the car numerous times with box boxes. The 1st one was a brand spanker stock 545RFE, lasted 2000klm of moderate driving (engine was still being run in). Cooked. 2nd "Built" box lasted 1800klms although it drove way better. Stronger more pronounced shifts and didnt feel 'slushy' like the stock one (1st one). Pity it fried itself too.
I was riding shotgun in the car when both boxes let go. Both on the freeway just cruising at 95-100ish, went to kick down to overtake and she just free revved like someone had knocked the gearstick into Neutral by acciedent. Bad smell of burnt ceramics occured at the same time. ATF smells like burnt electrical circuitry when overcooked.
I reckon a Manual box would be the only hassle free fix.
Will sound better as a manual aswell :)
damage_man98
03-09-2010, 11:24 PM
To be honest i would have prefered the manual but when I bought the JK they hadn't properly released the manual kits yet so I bought the auto JK. I absolutley hate the 3.8 with the auto on the stock gearing. If I wasn't planning on the hemi conversion i wouldn't have bought the auto. I'm not sure how dificult it would be to change it to manual now. When I was talking to Jeep Konection about the Hemi swap I was looking at the possibility of changing to the manual as they were changing their manual to an Auto so i could have used their un required parts including clutch pedel etc.
All a bit late now as the money has now been paid including the auto. Will have to see what happens and if I have any problems with it then instead of a replacement auto the manual will be on the cards. Not worth worrying about until it happens. Its like the theory behind keeping the stock axles for the first part of the build. If I break them the only thing I've lost is time as i haven't factored in any value for any parts I can sell including the 3.8l engine and the axles. Anything i get for them will go to pay any extra costs I was not aware of which there are already a few that I hadn't budgeted for. Most of which are to do with the extra cost of the 6.4 over the 5.7 hemi. Only time will tell if the choice was worth while.

Agreed. This would be your best bet. If you do some serious research and reading on what's happening in the States, they've had plenty that are failing with 6.1's, 6.4's and 7.0ltrs.
Something to think about - if Jeep thought the 545RFE was good enough to put behind the 510Nm CRD Merc engine in the WH, they would have used it. Instead they chose the Merc's W5A580 because of its strength and reliability.
They also chose to use it behind the 6.1lt SRT8's for that very reason - 545RFE can not handle that power or torque reliably.
They did however use the 545RFE behind the 5.7 Hemi WH's because not only were they 500Nm but they dont have the massive surge of Torque that hits you in the back like the CRD delivers. The 5.7lt is a gradual surge that has a peak high up in the rpms so much less strain on the Auto.
Food for though.
There are afew people going down the road of installing or trying to at least, install the W5A580 Mer box, good for a factory quoted 788Nm or 580Foot pounds of torque. Yum Yum.:p

I think so, its been a while since I thought about it! IT was the new 4 speed though. The Atlas people in the states were going to build some super special race 4 speed for it but the engineer said it wont handle the Torque over a long period of time.
Pity it broke on its 1st ever outing just crawling around some trails at the Glass House Mtns.

Well after the talk about the failed transmissions I've asked Burnsville about this and the response was pretty simple. It said "Rest assured the auto transmission will hold up fine. After 500 some conversions I have had only 2 bad transmissions. I have run a 440 in my JK for two years with the same transmission I am sending you." I know thats coming from the salesman but that's enough convincing for me as I haven't read anywhere else about any failures although I'm sure there has been some. If anyone can point me in the direction of anywhere there are any stories about this would be appreciated.
Moving forward I have now ordered the 37" MTR's with Kevlar and will hopefully get them this week. I'm not sure how they will fit with only the OME lift but there is only 1 way to find out so I'll give them a try and see what needs to be done to make them work. I don't think I will keep them on until the new axles are done so It will be the stock tyres for a while. I'm sure I wont be able to resist putting them on a for a couple of weekends though.
Unfortunately the mat black finish on the flat fender flares didn't work out. A big thanks to Bill and Manny from DBOR for all there efforts with trying to make these for me. I will now be going with the standard DBOR flat fender flares.
I've now also received some options and pricing for the new axle assemblies. The best option at the moment is the Currie Rock Jock 60's. Unfortunately this means I will need to change wheels as well due the the larger stud patter required for the front axle which will be another extra cost and not to mention the axles are very pricey as well but I guess you get what you pay for. I think the budget has well and truly gone out the window so I'll have to cut back on some things. Not sure what will get cut of the list yet though but hopefully not too much.
Hopefully later this week I should have some shipping info on the engine and install kit.

Well It’s been A while since the last update but things are starting to come together. I have now received the DBOR flat fender flares and installed them today. I still have to reinstall the stock splash shields but that can wait until next weekend. I also installed some 10mm front coil spacer to help level the jeep and at the same time installed extended bump stops front and rear to stop the 37's rubbing (well almost). I also used the opportunity to do some cutting of the rear pinch seam to help clear the 37's and the pinch seams now don't touch the tyres.
I'll leave the 37's on this week and see how they go with the stock Jeep gearing. First impressions are quite good actually and it sits nicely at highway speeds but just loses the overdrive. If it drives ok I may leave them on as it will now look a little strange with the flat flares with the stock tyres.
On the hemi front everything was collected from Burnsville Offroad a couple of weeks ago and I should get update on the shipping later this weeks but at the moment I should hopefully receive the delivery the last week of November. I'm hoping to have the engine conversion completed before Christmas so that only gives me a few weekends to get it done. I had spoken to Dan at Burnsville and he suggests doing the install with the body still on. After looking at his instructions this is the way I will do the install as there are a few clash checks with the body and the engine so it makes sense leaving the body on to save lifting it on and off multiple times.
I have now also ordered the axles. I have decided to go for Currie Rock Jock 60's front and rear and they will be arriving January some time. I will need to order new drive shaft to suit but I need to decide on the suspension first to get the length right.
The bumpers have now been ordered front and rear. I have ordered a HD switchblade rear bumper but am not holding my breath for this to arrive any time soon as there is a big waiting list. I have ordered a Teraflex Rockguard epic front bumper and plan on modifying it when it arrives by installing a winch/light hoop. I will most likely cut the existing hoop of my damages ARB bar. I went with this bumper and I wanted a midwidth bumper to complement the lines of the flat flares. This should arrive mid November and I should have it installed by the time the Hemi arrives.
The priority at the moment is to choose a coilover suspension system including long arms. The more I look at suspension systems the more I think that a long arm coilovers system is the way to go. I then need to choose between AEV and TMD on the heat reduction hood. I will wait until I have the hemi installed before I make this decision as I want to look at installing a snorkel so I will wait and see what it look like. I have put the transfer case on hold and am waiting to see the new atlas 4 speed when it is released.

Well things are progressing slower than expected. The engine shipment was delayed but its now on the water and on its final stretch and should be departing Singapore today and arrive in Perth next Monday. If all goes well i could have it as soon as next weekend but more likely to be the weekend after.
The front bar should also arrive next week and my insurance repairs should be conducted next week as well so all going well that issue will be resolved prior to the engine arriving.
I have left the 37's installed and surprisingly I found it better at highway speeds and am getting better fuel economy with the 37's than I get with the stock tyres. Just means I loose overdrive. Can't say I that long term I would like to run 37's with stock gearing though.
The Currie Rock Jock 60's are also on the water and if all goes well they should arrive just in time for Christmas.
The big item at the moment is suspension. I'm looking at different options and am considering a custom coilover setup in the rear that will involve cutting into the tub. Still in the early stages of planning though so not sure if it will be feasible or not. I'm also still trying to decide between either Rockkrawler, Tera Flex or Poly Performance long arm kits. They all have there advantages and disadvantages so its just a matter of deciding.
Below are a couple of pictures of the jeep as it looks at the moment. I still haven't done the modification to fit the stock splash shields and I think I will leave this until the engine is complete now.
Hopefully next update should be the first of the engine install.

What about an Offroad Evolution system ?
it wont work for my setup. I have a long range tank which means I cant relocate the muffler to forward of the rear axle. This also eliminates outlaw offroad bolt in kit as well as the new poly performance rear kit. The only kit I have found so far that will work is the outlaw offroad extreme coilover kit but I don't like how intrusive it is. Here is a picture of the kit.

I was thinking I may be able to use the Genright coil brackets designed for the TJ and install them notched into the chassis on the inboard side. From what I understand there is not enough room outboard of the chassis but I will take some more measurements and see what cane be done once the new axles are in. The end result would be something similar to the below setup on a 2 door.
Here is the Genright bracket.

Well its all about to begin. :D
The engine and parts are now in Perth awaiting clearance and I should receive them this week. The front bumper may also arrive this week.
Due to my work commitments and limited time before xmas I have decided that I am going to start the conversion this weekend so as soon as I get home later today the jeep will go into the garage and the old engine will be removed. I should hopefully have this completed by later tomorrow including doing any prep work I can for the new components.

So we started the engine removal Saturday afternoon and everything went quicker than expected. We had the old engine out in just over 3 hours and called it a day. On Sunday I did a few small items including removing the rest of the exhaust, removing the final section of steering shaft and removed the old engine mounts. I also did some work on the old damaged bumper ready for the new bumper.
The shipment has now cleared customs and I'll collect that Friday afternoon ready for commencing the install Saturday morning. The new bumper may also arrive so its going to be a busy weekend.
Here are some pictures so far.

That was one of the first things I did when I pulled the jeep into the shed. I can see how easy it would be for the steering wheel to turn those few time to break this clock spring especially when disconnection the upper end of the steering shaft.

Got the Currie Rock Jock 60's still coming?
Yeah the Currie Rock Jocks are on the way. They are due into Australia on Friday and then will be modified for the RHD. I should have them mid January.
I've ordered them with the 1350 yokes so I'll need to buy new drive shafts once they are in. I might try and modify the stock shafts for short term use and I won't know the final length until I have the suspension sorted out. That might not be for a while though as I'm still no closer to deciding on the suspension.
It looks like I will be organising another shipment of parts from the USA late January So Ill have to make up my mind soon.

Well things have gone much much slower than expected. When unpacking the items it was noticed that a few very important items were missing from the shipment. These included items such as the starter motor, transmission mount and a few other critical items. Due to the missing parts we were unable to do a full trial fit with the engine and transmission meaning that we are basically unable to proceed with any meaningful work with the install.
Burnsville have consolidated the missing parts and have sent them via airfreight and they are now sitting in Perth awaiting delivery. Unfortunately I have had to fly overseas for work and will not be back until late January so the install will have to wait until then.
With all going well and if all missing parts are received I expect to have the Hemi running hopefully within a full weekend of work if assistance is available. Some additional work will need to be done after this such as finalising the exhaust and gassing the A/C system.
Here are some pictures so far and a summary of work conducted.
Passenger Side Motor Mount in position. You can see the alignment holes that would normally be used to install the mounts without measuring. To move the engine further to the Passenger side the mounts need to be installed on the oposide side of the vehicle so the longer mount is on the drivers side. The positioning is very simple and is done by measuring from the front of the frame rail to the motor mount. I checked the measurement was correct by aligning them on the LHD install side and the measurements were fine.

The radiator has been bolted up. It uses a lot of the mounting hardware from the old radiator. The old transmission/air con cooler get reused and a new transmission cooler is provided. This is still to be installed. The radiator reservoir mounting needed to be modified slightly to get it to fit properly.
http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x411/glennursino/Hemi%20Install/Day%206%20-%20Engine%20Fitment%20Check/HemiInstallDay6025.jpg
http://i1180.photobucket.com/albums/x411/glennursino/Hemi%20Install/Day%206%20-%20Engine%20Fitment%20Check/HemiInstallDay6027.jpg
From here on it should be reasonably simple. The motor will be taken back out and a few more modification done to the firewall for proper clearance and new heat shield installed. The transmission will then be bolted up and a trial fit will be done. Once complete and if all goes well then the motor mounts and transmission mounts will be welded out. The electrics will then be installed and the motor and transmission will be installed for a final time. Following this it's just a matter of doing some plumbing and routing the exhaust which is what I see to be the 2 items that could cause any delays due to any parts being required being difficult to get on a weekend.
The initial drive may also be delayed as hopefully the new axles should arrive by the time I return home and I will try to get these installed at the same time.

Not too sure to be honest as its not done yet. As a guide for the 6.4ltr motor install alone I would say that after shipping, taxes, exchange rates etc that the full motor install would have cost me around $28 - $29k. I bought before the aussie dollar went up so it would be possiby a bit cheaper now. You could do the 5.7vvt for low 20s AUD possibly less which is what I had originaly budgeted. I haven't spoken to Jeep Konection for a while but they were looking at doing to kit for around 25k which is a good deal. Alot less hasles than doing it yourself plus I assume that there would be some warranty as well.
Looking great Glenn! Can't wait to see it completed! That 6.4 is a beast!
Thanks Jarrett. Looking forward to getting done and heading out wheeling in it. Can't wait to get that rear bumper from you. Keep up the good work.

I finally made it home after being overseas for work for a month while my parts were sitting at home. I started again yesterday with the install and have mounted the engine to the transmission and put it int the jeep for a trial fit. Its a tight fit putting it all in in 1 piece. I am now just tinkering around a little getting some of the smaller items prepped until one of my mates comes over on Saturday and welds out the motor mounts. Unfortunately I still have a couple of parts to recieve but nothing that will delay the first start which I am hoping to get done this weekend. The currie axles should be here next week also but I may wait a little while prior to installing these.
here is a picture of it bolted together. More updates to follow over the coming days.

Yesterday was a very slow day with the install. I basically just did trial fit of all items such as hoses etc to see what was required. I installed the transmission cooler although when I get time I may upgrade the mounts. I also installed some heat shielding on the long range fuel tank as the heat shield that came with the tank will no longer work. We started prepping the exhaust to be installed but the scalloping of the piped to get the angles right is above my fabrication skills so that can wait until later.
Today was a good day on the install. The pictures below show the progress made. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like we will get the engine started this weekend as we are currently on cyclone alert so I may not be able to get any work done tomorrow. At the end of today the motor and transmission are now in the final position. Air conditioner plumbed in, partially connected transmission lines, electrics and power steering.
I still have a couple of issues to resolve with hoses etc but it all seems to be going reasonably well. It would have been a much quicker process if I had received all the parts in the initial delivery. Now I have the important parts I can get items installed rather than doing trial fits and then removing again.
Here are the pictures and some details.

Looks good. One thing though your transmission cooler is mounted the wrong way. That is the only way around you can't mount it. You need to have the ports either on the side or on the top. If they're on the side then the in is the lower one and the out is the upper one. That way there's no high spots for air to get trapped.

Thanks for the Tip. I'll get this fixed once I have some time. Current priorities are the other plumbing so i can get it started.
Below are some more pictures of the install. I only really had a chance last Sunday to work on the exhaust and a little bit of other plumbing. Still need to do some more exhaust work to install the sensors and then it should be a small amount more of plumbing and electrics and if all goes well it will be first start tomorrow.
I also received the Currie Rock Jock III's today. They look good and I can't wait to get them installed but they are going to have to wait for a while yet.
Power Steering Lines. I need to move the reservoir to the passenger side if possible as the current setup required the low pressure system to go from Drivers side out of the steering box the passenger side old transmission cooler back to the power steering reservoir on the driver's side and then back to the power steering pump on the passenger side.

4 year of hard work and saving and you can do the same.
Well finally today the hemi roared to life for the first time. I was also able to take it for a short drive although I had to take it easy as there is still more work to be done. Even being conservative on the right foot it was clear that I'm going to be having some fun with this.
I need that send a big thanks to by best mate Simon for helping me with the install and also my Dad. I couln't have done this with out them.
The items that we still need to complete are the exhaust, rotate the transmission cooler, change the routing of the power steering lines, get new fuel hoses made and a few other tasks. Unfortunately I am unable to do any more work until next weekend and hopefully I will get the majority of the work done then so I can take it for a proper drive.

Well I've finally got the jeep out on the road properly and I gotta say its alot of fun. I can't wait for the next stage to be complete so i can get it off road.
I ordered a poly performance 4.5" wild kit from DBOR and it should be here this week ready for the install over the weekend. I will be installing the currie rock jock III's at the same time but unfortunately I will have to wait for driveshafts before I can take it out for a spin.
Last week I recieved my new walker evans beadlocks and I mounted the 37" Wrangler MTR with kevlar's on them on the weekend and they look great.

Here is the video of the second start. I haven't taken any video's yet with the exhaust complete. I'll see if I can get one of a 0 to 100 with the stock axles and tyre and then compare it to with the 37's and 5.13 gearing.
Give it a month or so and I'll be getting the Jeep out on the trails starting down that way. I'll probably organise a trip for anyone thats interested.

I still have a fair bit of work to be done before its complete. Even with the motor swap. Most of it is re work as there were a few things we did that were not quite right. Doing it again the install would be much simpler and easier. I'm putting some notes together for anyone interested in doing this themselves. Its all quite easy. The hardest thing I had was figuring out alot of the smaller details as the instructions are mainly for the large items and don't cover the small details. Unfortunately the small details is what takes all the time. I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.
Just found this post... you made it look easy... top effort.... jizz in your pants material!!

Things keep progressing well but with lots of challenges still. I installed the poly performance 4.5" wild lift on the weekend as well as the currie rock jock III axles with the Walker Evans Beadlocks and 37" MTR's with Kevlar. I have to say I'm happy with the way it’s starting to look and can't wait to get it out and see how it performs.
I have some thinks to change though as I will need to get the exhaust modified as the rear track bar currently clashes on full compression and the bump stops could be smaller as the 37's still have plenty of clearance under full compression. The 40's (one day) should be fine also.
I've just ordered the Tom Woods Drive Shafts and have an order going in for some other miscellaneous parts from the states including a winch. I haven’t decided between either the warn 9.5xp or the 9.5ti. I'm hinting towards the TI at this stage due to weather resistance. I'm not sure why but winches seem to be way cheaper from the states.
On the weekend I also mocked up how the front bar will look. I had done this before with the stock tyres and was not happy with it. Now the 37's are on it looks a lot different and I'll be proceed with welding on the ARB hoop to the Teraflex bumper.
I had to remove the rear Kaymar bar to help fit the 37's with the new control arms so that will be for sale very soon along with quite a few other parts including the motor and axles etc.
I received some good news yesterday and my rear bar has been collected from the powder coaters and Jarrett from HD customs has let me know that its turned out great. Can't wait to see some pictures of it and more importantly get it installed once it arrives.
Here are some pictures from the weekend.

Well Spotted. I was wondering how long it would be before someone commented. I didn't even notice myself until I looked at the photo's yesterday. Its only the one tyre (front passenger side) thats mounted incorrectly. I guess thats what happens when you do it on a stinking hot day in a tin shed.

I thought it was about time for an update. The Tom Woods drive shafts arrived a few weeks ago and were installed. I had to get a little bit of machining done to the front flange on the new transfer case flange but nothing major but it delayed installing the front for an extra week. I’ve also had the ARB bar hoop welded onto the Teraflex front bumper and I'm really happy with the way it has turned out. I still need to make some spotlight mounting brackets for the Hella spotties but it will be best to wait for the new winch to arrive before i do this to make sure there are no clashes. I've now mounted the Lightforce 170's on the windshield light brackets and have wired them in. I'm slowly working through my big list of small items that still need to be done but I'm now starting to get out and about in the Jeep and do some testing. I'm taking it to the beach tomorrow and will give it a good workout to see if there will be any overheating issues.
The next big item on the agenda is to actually decide on some new wheels as I can't go through the licensing process with the Walker Evans beadlocks.
I've also split up my shipments from the US and are now doing 2 shipments as some items have been delayed. I'm really looking forward to getting my new HD Customs rear bumper and tyre carrier which is on the first shipment with a TMD heat reduction hood and a few other small items. This shipment won't arrive until early June so I still have some waiting to do.

That’s the thermo fan. Its very loud. Burnsville now do a motor driven fan which I might look at changing to.
I just got back from a quick drive down the beach. Unfortunately there are no big dunes to really test it out on but it went well. The hardest thing is getting used to the gearing with the auto which sometimes dictated the speed i had to cruise at. The engine did get quite warm so I took it relatively easy. I want to put in a transmission temperature gauge just so I can see what temperature its sitting at. Once I got used to the engine temp gauge sitting higher than normal it was ok as it just sat at the same temperature and never got too hot. Once I stopped it would only take less than a minute for it to get down to normal temperature so it can't have been that hot.
This was also the first time I've taken the JK out and its a lot different driving than the TJ on the sand as its alot heavier and also with the auto it makes for a different drive. It did however cruise through the tyre tracks very easily and I could get out of the tracks or cross over them with it being a lot less effort than in the TJ. I guess this probable has something to do with not only the bigger tyres but the wider stance.
I've now started looking at hydro assist steering which is something that i had planned a long time ago but had never really looked at with regards to the RHD issues. I sent an email to West Texas Offroad regarding their Red Neck Rams kit and they responded overnight saying they could do a RHD version. I’ve asked him for more details but it looks promising. Not sure if anyone else has managed to get hydro assist on the RHD JK but if they have it would be good to know.

Hi mate,

Dave
Yeah still got my TJ but it hasn't had anything done to it for a while as I've been focused on the JK.
A few updates with the JK I've just about got the last of the parts ordered and have made a few changes to the plans. My first shipment from the USA is due to arrive mid June and has my HD Customs rear bumper, TMD heat reduction hood and a few other parts on it. I'm really looking forward to getting the bumper. The second shipment is being consolidated at the moment and includes a OR-Fab sports cage, River Raider Aluminium skid system, front coil overs, hopefully some RSE slider steps if they ever finish them and some other goodies which I won't mention yet but am rather excited about. Needless to say I have gone well and truly over budget but the plans have also changed so I'm still happy with everything but more than a little broke.
On the Hemi side of things it has been running really well and Burnsville are going to be sending me a few small pieces in regards to air intake and radiator fan. It will be really good to get rid of the current fan as it is very loud. I can't hear it when driving normally but when not moving or going slow speeds it gets annoying.

I just thought I would provide an update on the build. after going through a slow patch I've now starting to get a few things done. The hemi is running really well and I have clocked up about 15000Km's now. On the highway the jeep drives really well and has plenty of power to hold speed (or accelerate) even when towing a heavy camper trailer through the hills. I've had it out wheeling a few time and its performed well as expected. I've had to be a bit controlled as I didn't have any rocker protection but I've know got the RSE step sliders installed so I can't use that excuse any more.
I received my first shipment from the US back in June with the HD Customs Switchblade rear bumper, 9.5ti winch and the TMD hood and a few other small items. The quality and design of the rear bumper are as good as expected and well worth the wait. Its great to have the 37” spare out of the jeep and on the back again and its also good having the tyre carrier integrated with the rear door. After receiving the bar I ordered a HD Customs licence plate holder and Jarrett has outdone himself once again and made a custom unit to suit the Aus licence plate and he also threw in a little surprise for me (see below picture). I can’t speak highly enough of HD Customs and would highly recommend them to anyone although be prepared to wait as he is limited with production as he makes everything custom. I also installed the TMD hood but have since removed it to get it painted so I hadn’t installed the side vents. It should be ready to pickup next weekend when I'm home.
As far as the engineering is going its all on hold for the time being. I've upgraded the muffler and rerouted the exhaust to behind the transfer case to allow for proper installation of the skid plates. The new muffler is a lot quieter and doesn't have any drone. There doesn’t appear to be any problems with the engineering and it should just be a matter of ticking all the boxes and doing the tests.
I received my second shipment a copuple of weeks back and hopefully thats my last shipment that I'll organise no now over the next few months I have a lot of work to do including, installing the evo front double throwdown coil overs, Orfab sports cage, fitting up the river raider full aluminium skid system, changing the 37” mtrs from the Walker Evans beadlocks to the procomp wheels and doing some trimming to see if there is any way I can get the 42" Iroks to fit and believe it or not possibly swapping motors. I won’t go into any more details on this at the moment except to say there is nothing wrong with my hemi and big thumbs up to Burnsville Offroad and watch this space.
In addition to this I still need to get the Rock Jock axles painted. I’m toying with the idea of getting the full axle assemblies and the aluminium skid plates painted hemi orange as it’s the same price as black. Not sure what this will turn out like. Any thoughts?
Anyway here are some old pictures

I couldn't be happier with this bar. Its by far one of the best mods I've done.
Awesome build! Will keep my eyes and ears open for this rig when I'm down your way.
What sort of fuel economy do you get with this setup?
Fuel economy. Hmmm what's that? I think I can calculate that by the following formula. Right foot x pressure = big smile + empty wallet. In all honesty it depends on what I'm doing and the speed I sit on. If I put the cruise control on at 100 - 105km/h I generally average about 16ltrs/100 which is under a couple of ltrs/100 worse than I got with the stock engine. If I cruise at 110-115 the economy drops to anywhere from 18 -21ltrs/100 as the MDS doesn't seem to be able to stay activated.
I just finished uploading a video showing the step sliders. Excuse the mess of the jeep. I've got a few half finished jobs on the go to say the least.

They are very expensive at 1800USD plus shipping. I ordered them over a year ago when they thought the price was only going to be 1200USD. I had made a deal with the other half that if I wanted to run 40's she wanted the step sliders. I had already ordered the 42's when I found out the price so I figured i should still keep my end of the deal.

The poly kit is great and if you got it with the fox shocks and teraflex speed bumps it would be even better. I can't do the DTD rear as I have a long range tank so can't relocate the muffler. I'll be keeping the poly kit in the rear for the time being and will decide what to do once the front and my other mods are done.

Well once again I figured it was time for an update on the build up. Everything kinda went on hold for quite some time but I’m back into it now. The only problem is I’m working away so the Jeep is sitting waiting for me having time to work on it and I can only work on it on the weekends which makes it worse.
Since the last update back in November I have finally fitted the Orfab sports cage. What a pain in the arse that was but the end result is good but more importantly late in April I finally received the new 6.4 motor from Burnsville and immediately commenced taking out the old one to swap them over. Once the motor was out I also quickly decided that I should finally get around to installing the front coilovers as it would be much easier to get access to the mounts with the motor out. We got these cut out but I then went away again for work.
Since then I have only had 1 good chance to get stuck into it again and we got the front Evo DTD system installed and while we were there welded on the new tabs for the hydro assist steering. We ran into a clash between the steering shaft and the coilover towers so had to make up a spacer to get the clearance. Its still very tight and I only have about 5mm clearance between the steering shaft and the coilover towers and not much more to the exhaust headers.
The new motor that was sent is essentially a long block so we swapped over all the components from the old motor to the new and mounted it back in the JK but that was the last of the progress for the weekend and once again I’m away for the next 2 weeks so it will have to wait till I’m back.
Hopefully by the time I’m back I should have received the new steering box ported for the hydro assist and believe it or not I’ve been waiting on engine oil as Jeep recommend different oil for the new 6.4 and as they haven’t brought them in yet they didn’t have any in stock. We went as far as checking with the jeep technical department and they advised against using anything else. Might be a sales pitch but best to be safe.
I still have a lot of work to go but for now the priority is getting it back on the road and off-road so there wont be any more goodies for a while. Once this round is done the next major job is to get the 42’s on and clearing. Not sure how much work will be involved but I definitely need to cut into the chassis for steering clearance and will have some fender cutting to be done. I want to keep the COG as low as possible but it’s easier said than done.
Anyway here are some pictures.
I laid out some of the old parts when I was cleaning up the shed. Its all for sale if anyone is interested. I also have a lot more not shown.

Mock Up of The 42’s. They will have to wait a bit longer before being bolted up properly.

Long story short. My motor was meant to be a 6.4 stroker as the new 6.4 hadn't been released when I ordered it and I wasn't getting the HP figures it should have been getting so Burnsville sent me a new 6.4 at not cost.

Well a couple of weekends ago I got first start as expected and also managed to get it driving so I could bring it back to Perth. The new motor is amazing and the power difference is very noticeable. It naturally accelerates much better and is now able to smoke the 37's relatively easily from standing start. On the highway it hold speed much better and doesn't need to change gears as much in the hills. Fuel economy is higher that the old motor but that's expected and it may come down a little as it frees up. On the weekend I towed our heavy camper trailer and its very noticeable the difference. Previously the overdrive would struggle to kick in (although I would normally turn it off anyway) where now it holds easily although I do turn it of.
I haven't had a chance to really test out the new suspension yet but from the road testing it handles nicely and it does flex out very well on what I have tried. It also feels more stable when flexing. I'll have to cut out some of my transmission cross member as if flexes that much that the front drive shaft hits and I'll also need to extend my already extended brake lines
I have a few little things to work through with the hydro assist as it would be better if it was more responsive at lower RPM but it will get there.
I haven't got any photo's online yet but try to get some over the next few days but here are a couple of vids of the first start and also a subsequent start with it being revved but unfortunately the audio isn't very good so it doesn't do justice.

Is your engineer going to pass the JK with the 42's ?
Or are they just for trails ?

Nah No chance. In W.A. we are limited to 50mm bigger regardless of being able to pass all the lane change and braking tests etc. I can't even get the 37's legal.
Here are a couple of pic taken at home testing the coilover travel. I'm going to need some bigger logs.

well tonight while doing some testing I was using my Aeroforce Gauges and figured I would do a 0-100 speed run and see what time I would get. Due to the very limited straight road I have available which is also on a slight hill I did a run in both directions to even things out. I'm pretty confident I could shave quite a bit off these times as well as I have both fuel tanks full and all the tools in the back etc and also took it easy off the line. Picture below shows the results. Disregard the 1/4 mile times etc as I had to back off as soon as i got to 100. High 5 second 0-100 time isn't too shabby for a Jeep on 37's especially since the stock 3.8 time is about 11.
