This must have been a very long while ago. Semi autos are available now as Category C but only to primary producers or professional shooters (ie. pest control) but automatics are strictly prohibited as are handguns, the exception being you can own a handgun if it's for competition use.

The laws are not great but are becoming more restrictive all the time. It's just the addition of new laws to curb gun crime that upsets firearm owners because new laws don't help; criminals don't follow the law. And most of the time the laws themselves are just a hoop jumping exercise to make the public think that the government is actually doing something.

The biggest part of the problem is public perception of the sport.

Was only last year so not long ago and your hand gun statement is not correct well not in the NT anyway. In helicopter mustering hand guns which are legal and licensed are commonly used and license must be renewed every year even barrumundi fishing trips by helicopter you can have a handgun, you can call it croc protection. like i said pilots in remote areas you can do this.

We had pro shooters with autos but maybe they were naughty cowboys but yes they used semi auto to shoot from helicopters to cull camels, donkeys etc.

Wow that's pretty surprising! Here in NSW owning a handgun for anything but target comp is a big no no, and you must participate in a set number of club competitions per year to be able to keep the license and guns. Sorry for the misinformation... I didn't realise anywhere in Aus allowed handguns for anything other than competitions... Although I do already know NSW sucks for firearms laws!

On a lighter note. How many other pilots carry hand guns because I'm FIFO and no longer feel comfortable lol.

survival to protect you from crocs, buffalo, pigs etc if you go down in the bush, i knew a few helicopter pilots with hand guns some even had dirty harry type hand cannons again all mustering guys. never heard of any fixed wing guys with them so i think your safe with your fifo to mines charter flights.

Regarding auto's yes they dont need, but there cowboys

They aren't cowboys. Semi autos are perfectly legal under the right licence. There is however a difference between semi auto ( fires once each time the trigger is pulled) and auto (pull and hold the trigger and the gun continues to fire until the magazine is empty). As said previously, full auto hasn't been legal on this country for decades. Semi auto still is legal, just more restricted than before 96.

Semi auto is definitely needed for the aerial cullers. It would just not be cost effective with a bolt action, they wouldn't kill anywhere enough ferals to justify the helicopter fuel.

Civilian Owned Firearms, what do we think?

For those that wonder why law abiding firearms citizens get super annoyed when more restrictions are placed on them: http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-05-2...lunder/4031190

Just one of the failings at the border - yet the law abiding citizens get reamed even more...

GariJ, not trying to pick a fight here, but can you please let us know what you had to go through to get your bow - which, when you break it down - is considered a 'weapon' just like a firearm - and if not a weapon, please justify

Thx :)
