Also make sure the bolts in the trackbar bracket are tight. The ones you can see down beside the coil on the side of the chassis.

When you think there tight enough, then try another 1/4 turn. I get cracking nose from bottom control arm body mount bolt also (I'm on RE arms).

Hey xjdavid, was good to catch up with you & Rob the other sunday:D thanks for popping in... Was almost like a Tool Box Day.

i have a 96 and it seemed fine, is there a way i can tell its being recalled?fixed?

Squirejames359 25-02-2015 08:57 AM

Wikchi, somewhere earlier in this thread (can't remember what page sorry) is a phone number to call Jeep and get them to check it. They need the VIN number and can tell you what month and year it had the recall checked. Mine (a 95 Sport) had been checked twice; once in 97 and then in 98 and they tried to tell me that was job done as far as they were concerned. I eventually won the argument and they fixed it. Be aware that several times when I rang them my VIN number magically didn't show up and I had to tell them it was definitely there and gave them the dates they told me my XJ was checked. WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN and GET REFERENCE NUMBERS FOR YOUR CALLS.

My XJ is great now, no issues and was fixed properly, was a bit of a headache to get there but worth it.

Hope this helps.

Regards, Squire

Hi Jeepers

Just got myself a '96 XJ after a few years without a fourby, thought I'd try a Jeep after my Rover crapped itself, thought they were tough!

Haven't even got the tyres dirty yet but have replaced the water pump, and now the steering let go...as I pulled into a parking spot at the shops...lucky!!

Thinking it might be the same known problem on this thread, the steering box has come away from the chassis. Gonna be on the phone to Jeep now that I know about the recall.

I have some pics if anyone has any comments or advice, really wondering if I've bought an albatross for my neck, sucker. :(http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...05e5b44915.jpg

all you need to do is phone them , give them your VIN number and see if the recall has been done , if it has , then at some stage someone has removed the box , and didn't check to see if the bolts went in through the bracket , that is located inside the chassis if I remember there are three bolts ? and each one has to go through the bracket , you would need to remove the bumper and so on to see if the bracket is there , if not , take it to recall.

Just had this happen to my Jeep, luckly my wife was in a car park when it let go.
Have just got this installed http://www.c-rok4x4.com/#!c-rok-onli...tegory=9969132
ALl fitted and running made a huge difference, cost me $278 delivered from the states

Could have had it repaired for free through the recall... Looks like a more solid solution though ;)

Tried this but was told it already had been repaired with that little pissy aluminum brace they supplied
