Engine VM (detroit) '425CXI....The 2.5 litre Turbo-Diesel engine is of Vittori manufacture, purchased fully built from the VM plant in Italy. This was only available with a manual transmission. Less than a year before end of production an automatic version was announced Automatic VM diesels are rare, and the Ford Motor company used the 2.5 VM diesel in their Scorpio as well as Rover in their Range Rover.

Headlights

Narva Part no. 72086 ( H4 200 *142 mm high/low beam insert)

Battery

Battery: DIN65L (various brands)

Glow Plugs

I have one old one that came from the factory:-
Marked on the plug 0 250 202023 11V
The box from VM is marked "4 607 2003 F candeletta 12V"
HKT Corporation brand (made in Japan) the Part is HKT No. B-086

(repco) ch163 $34
bosch 0250-202-023 11v between $49 and $55 auto pro and most other part shops
ngk y-923-u $66 auto pro etc
hkt corp b-086 $23.50 every body sells these from small diesel workshops to the big boys

to change your plugs make sure you have a long reach 10 mm socket access to a compressor and some high temp anti sieze compound , you need compressd air to blow all the dust and crap away from the plug seats (before you take the plugs out) and just put a smear of anti sieze on the threads of the new plugs before you put them in you only have to take the oil fill cap off to access plug number 2 hope this helps.

Been given this link by Vince in the UK who is on the NAXJA site. He was shocked at the re-build prices you are paying and said this place is what he uses.
http://ccgi.vmspecialists.plus.com
He said he paid $3600 AUD for a full re-built exchange engine. The site also lists some parts that might be worth for you guys to bring over as seem much cheaper than what you have been quoting.

Exhaust
Dump pipe is attached to the back of the turbo using Torx head bolts. Tha C*********nts!!
Recommended way to remove is detach at tail end, then remove all bits above the turbo. Unbolt the oil feed line, take care not to lose the copper washers. Drop the turbo off the headers by the three bolts to the headers.

You will need to cut/grind a ring spanner to 3.5/4mm thick to fit it over the rear stud and onto the nut.
These nuts do not appear to be hardened at all so BE CAREFUL not to burr them.
Then the turbo should drop and be able to shift it so you can get the Torx bolts out.

I would recommend if you have the $$$ to do it, custom headers and intake elbow, to allow turbo to be shifted forwards/higher, allowing a better flow dump pipe, with much easier access.

Or in the first place, dont go bouncing your dump pipe off rocks and truck tyres!!

Thanks guys got rid of the jeep filter. put in a CAV filter/seperator with a
inline primer bulb out of an outboard fuel line works perfectly.

2x hosetails $11,80
primer bulb $10.95
4x hoseclamps $10.80

Grand total of $105.55

Hi

There are some useful downloads, probably the best collection on the the net.

http://www.greatlakesxj.com/tech.html

The parts catalogs at greatlakes include info on diesels, though some of the numbers have been modified.

Lundgh.com has some use full stuff, though it is again an american site so little on the diesel engine.

If you are willing to part with some bucks there are several sites you can down load from. If I find anything else will keep you posted

Downloadable VM engine manual

Hi

I have a huge data base of files on the Cherokee and yes Cherokee the GreatLakes site has proved a great source. I have found no earlier than 1999 in pdf or cd format that covers the VM. Lots of info for Gilda though of petrol engines ;)

However do not dispair, I have found a seprate file that may help.
Click here for the link VM Diesel, don't panic it is in english; although on a Russian site. I am not sure if it was lifted from a complete file.

Hope this helps.

Just as passing thought if the fix you have does not work, check your water sedometer, drain it and change it if you have not done, or do not know when it was last done. I have known this to stop a diesel. I suspect it is most likely a electrical fault as already suggested, such as a fuel injection pump it self.

Simon R 23-06-2008 11:01 PM

Just to confirm Kyro Rock Munki intial thread #1 - GLOW PLUGS HKT B-086 is correct as listed. HKT glow plug catalouge lists this as (for 98 XJ TD 2.5) HKT B-081 This is INCORRECT. B-086 is correct and matches in cross ref to Bosh 0250-202-023 11v.

I just bought 1997 grand Cherokee 2.5 turbo diesel, few days a go the engine could not run due to the glow plug.Could you inform me where to find the BOSCH 0250-202-023-11 V? I need 4 pieces.Since I live in Jakarta-Indonesia,email of supplier will much appreciated.Thk's

dxj 19-08-2008 05:49 PM

Hi,
Glow plugs from any diesel service centre, Try Detroit diesel.

Limp home modes include

10% torque reduction
50% torque reduction
and fixed 1100 rpm

Maybe your temperature sensor is no good? Maybe stuck in cold start mode with no turbo boost?

If you are lucky you may be able to get the odometer to read out the fault codes. I think it is switch to ign (but not start) then back off 3 times then leave with ign on but not started. If you have the right model the odo will read out some codes.

PM me with your snail mail address if you want me to send a CD with the service & diagnostic manuals.

Cheers

XJ TD Screen Washer Motor

The windscreen washer finally gave up. So time to do a replacement, er no not when the Jeep dealer wanted £60 off me ( Series 1 washer). :wall: I had a real problem trying to locate one here in the UK. Crown Automotive does not do them, who I import from, and I did not want to second hand.
Once removed, carefully preserving washer between washer unit and screenwash bottle, I remembered I had seen the motor in a catalouge. So I phoned up a local supplier and got washer motor for a Neon/Voyager, pictured below.

http://i450.photobucket.com/albums/q...h_NeonPump.jpg

Unlike the Jeep unit the Chrysler's head is held to the motor unit by two screws. Once I had removed these, I set about taking the XJs unit apart. This is held together by rivets, you will have to drill these out. Pull off the washer and impeller. Swap the complete unit top section over, put on the black washer, then the impeller, it will only fit one way. Then line up the top section, use the Chrysler screws, but do not over tighten. The result is below.
Total cost, £15 GBP and two cups of coffee. Use original washer it is a better fit to bottle.

Injector removal uses specialist VM tool (part # VM1012A), this has a notch on it for the wiring on injector 1. If you can't obtain this tool (that's everyone!), a 28mm deep shafted socket in the impact range (chrome moly)(black socket) does the trick, you may have to cut the wiring in the middle and rejoin/solder afterwards though.

Evert 30-12-2009 07:46 AM

Hey guys, just a quick question. On the first post here it says that a Ryco A1332 air filter will fit a 2.5 diesel cherokee.
I had a look on the Ryco site and there is says that the filter is for a petrol cherokee and not the diesel. The dimension of the air filter on the Ryco website is 170 x 343 mm where the dimensions of the diesel airbox are roughly 140 x 220 mm.
Any thoughts?
Will the valvoline and purolator fit or should i just go to Jeep and buy an original one? What do you guys buy?

Thanks

Before you place a spanner on these bolts/studs, spray with Bolt Off (in a blue labeled aerosol. We also use it to remove felt pen marks on goods/shelves )and leave for half an hour. We sell it out here in Emerald so should be available most places. Save drilling out a broken stud. G-r-r-r-r-r #@*!

Hi Everyone,

Chasing a Clutch Kit for 99 XJ Diesel. we have a number off Jeep : 04864835AB - can anyone confirm?

Whats a Spigot, pilot or Release Bearing? We are being told its seperate to the actual Clutch Kit...

thanks
Mike

Deezelweazel 13-06-2010 08:33 PM

there are usual two kits available:

with or without release bearing. But it is stupid not to replace the release bearing while at it.
the release bearing does transmit the force you put on the pedal to release the clutch via the release fork.
It does sit directly begind the tranny in front of the clutch assembly.
Yes and it the thing usually making noise when worn.

there is another tiny non metric(!) bearing( called pilot bearing) inside the flywheel you should replace that too to avoid future trouble.
The only problem is this bearing is hidden behind 5 stretchable bolts which have to be replaced every time and they aren't cheap.

A good kit contains the clutch cover, clutch disc and release bearing assembly
usually they are made by Sachs and sold under various brand names.
can't tell you the jeep number- to expensive anyway. Just make sure to lube the spline very slightly of the transmission with a special high temperature grease designed for that purpose.

Fuel filter

Hi every one.

I am relatively new on here.

Just wanted to share my experience in trying to get Racor R20T filter elements out of the USA.
I contacted an ebay seller, 6573patricia & asked if they could supply 3 filters. They replied that they could & the price would be aprox $A110 including postage. $36.67 per filter sounded good so I proceeded. After about 35 days of no show I disputed it with paypal. 2 weeks later they credited me for the transaction. A total waste of nearly 2 months !! I see that 6573patricia is still listing R20S filter elements on ebay & offers the R20T as well. My experience is to stay well clear of that ebay seller. They trade as TDS Industries LLC. If any one is thinking of using them, may I suggest that based on my experience best keep away from them.
I hope this post saves some other members some time & grief.

Just bought a headgasket set and the bolts in EBAY.CO.UK at a member called "shirley9293" or "The Gasket Shop". 280NZ$ all together (incl. shipping to NZ). Very fast delivery (less than a week) and very friendly and competent staff.

The Kiwi price would have been over 1,300NZ$ at Chrysler!!!!
