JK CRD Big End Failures

Hi All,

We have noticed a reasonable number of JK CRD big end issues showing up on the forum.

If your CRD has experienced a big end failure please list details of it here. If we get enough replies then a trend may appear, helping others to avoid the issue.

To begin with this thread should focus mainly on big end failures so please try and keep things specific.

Details of interest include (but not limited to):

Failure type
Model Year
Kms at time of failure
Gearbox type
Any ECU tune installed
Any EGR removal
Catch can installed
General Service interval
Oil weight and type used
Location
Tyres size and diff ratios
% time spent used under reasonable load, i.e. towing or with significant weight on board

ADDED:
kms on odometer when purchased
Transmission cooler added? (if so, location?)

Cheers

Mark, how many kms were on the Jeep when you bought it?

Gus, I think you bought yours brand new right?

Yup from new

I bet most of the engine failures will of had the ecu tuned.

Can you explain your reasoning behind this?

No reason really just a feeling.
I just think the engine might be under to much stress with the tune .
That's just my opinion.

I had two tunes done to my jk diesel the first one was way over fueling.
Too much fuel I have heard is bad for diesels.

Then I got the other tune done from a different guy. He told me the first guy didn't delete the egr like he said and it did run alot better and harder.the second tune.

But even after the second tune it was never as smooth as not having a tune at all .
I don't have a lot of faith in them

So to all the people who think they have the egr delete. Do you really know it has. As I thought it was.

Let's wait for a few more more details of actual failures before we start hypothesising.

Which is the whole point of the thread, to compare actual information

I think we're going to want 8-10 failures before we can decide something is a trend.

samft 18-05-2018 10:27 PM

I have also added a request for aftermarket transmission cooler information to the original questions

gusthewonderslug 19-05-2018 12:11 AM

#3 seems to be the common failure point.

samft 30-05-2018 06:50 PM

Hey guys, anyone else with failure details to add?

If you know someone who's had a failure, please point them in this direction.

It would be good to get a decent list going.

Thanks

samft 26-09-2018 08:26 PM

I was really hoping we'd get a lot more replies to this...

It's always touted as a big deal but only a few people have actually populated their details.

Another question I was thinking, "was the Jeep on cruise control when the failure occurred or was it on cruise for any significant duration before the failure".

I've noticed my CRD will hold the gear and 'lug' a lot longer on cruise, which certainly feels like the engine is labouring a lot more

josh9465 26-09-2018 09:29 PM

I was driving 110km/h had slightly higher coolant temps. 112C in 30C temps. Then followed by a loud ticking noise.

Hi guys from Greece. My kk crd (with the same engine as yours) died at 148.000 kms. I dont know why. I was just cruising at 120 and the same ticking started. Dont remember which cylinder failed, I must ask my mechanic but I think is the same problem just like you. I am sure that at least 5 same engines failed. I changed mine and found one with 4.000 kms on the clock. Note: no ecu tune or something else on my engine, just litlle bigger tires.

Consider switching to Penrite HPR-5, It is the same spec as enviro but is full zinc so it has better anti-wear properties. Its a 229.5 where enviro is a 229.51, the 1 indicates its a low ash and low zinc that is suited for DPF's.

I contacted Penrite and they recommended it to me once they knew I didn't have a DPF.

MidnightMods 21-11-2018 06:14 PM

$500 for a new DPF. $10,000 for a new motor.. I think using the oil with extra zinc is worth the trade off.

Engine Oil Viscosity (2.8L Diesel Engines)

For vehicles equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), 5W–30 ESP fully synthetic, low ash oil that meets DaimlerChrysler Material Standard MS-11106 must be used.

For vehicles not equipped with a DPF, 0W-40 ESP fully synthetic oil that meets DaimlerChrysler Material Standard MS-10725 may be used.

I got the above from an online service manual.

For non DPF I can only find Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 that complies to MS-10725.

Wonder if anyone was using that oil and had a bearing go?
