FSJ: 460 Big Block Ground up Resto

Hey.. New here, thought i would share my Jeep Build. Some of this wont make too much sense because its copied from a Falcon forum that i frequent on as I am mainly a Ford man, until I was given this Jeep from my dad, so here goes..

My dad owned it since around 91. He purchased the Jeep stock standard, 360 AMC, Turbo 400, quadratrack and D44 Front and Rear. My Mum dropped us to school every day up until 1997 she got herself a new Fairlane.

In 1997 he got the 460 EFI from the states with a C6 box, converted to a D20 Transfer, installed a Rancho 3" springlift, 3" body lift, had it resprayed in Maroon and silver. The Panel did a number on him though and used ALOT of spray puddy, not even a year later is started to crows feet and peel.

Unfortunately I don't have any pics of it during the original build.

So in 2001 it got sold to my brothers mate buggered paint job. In the 5 years he owned it all he did was strip it down to a bare shell and sand it back to Metal, 5 years later (2006) myself and my dad bought it back looking like this:

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...n_photo/12.jpg

originally after getting it back we were going to make it something special, only to realise my brothers mate lost alot of parts and it was going to be alot of work in the short amount of time, as we wanted to take it to the Jamboree in 2006, Black Duck Valley.

We decided to paint it ourselves and turn it into a bit of a mud pig.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f..._photo/1-1.jpg

In late 2006 we took it to the jeep jamboree in black duck valley where i took it though the mud run... it swallowed a whole gut full of water and twisted 2 rods
heres a pick of it at the jamboree:

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...o/untitled.jpg

So we ended up buying a new short motor

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...photo/1234.jpg

so this is how it stood then:
460 big block EFI, Custom grind cam, roller rockers, double valve springs, heads decked 18 thou block decked 10 thou. EFI Heads, twin 50MM throttle bodies, 42PSI injectors, Haltech E11V2

XA extractors with Custom collectors down to a twin 2 1/2" exhaust with stainless mufflers

3" bodylift, 3" suspension lift with ES2000 shockies and custom springs

15" Custom Rims with 33" wrangler mud Tyres

C6 auto, dana 20 transfer case with dana 44 diffs front and rear.

It made 238rwhp at Chiptorque in Nerang.

Heres some pics of how it looked then:

More Coming...

NUT347 18-02-2015 07:02 PM

Being a young fella, I did alot of stupid stuff in the jeep...

I hit a tree..

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...o/d3c38b17.jpg

Got it bogged alot...

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...o/a1ad25d8.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...o/514c28f3.jpg

Hit up the Beach a few times

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...o/IMG_0430.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...436_9743_n.jpg

In January 2011 I decided the Jeep deserved a ground up resto, So i stripped it down to a body:

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...o/IMG_0690.jpg

NUT347 18-02-2015 07:13 PM

I then bought a 94 XR8 Falcon, Turbo'd it and lost interest in the Jeep. The body sat at my dads for 2 years until early 2013 a mate of mine sent me a link to a Jeep on Gumtree.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...05045C12AF.jpg

1982 Cherokeesports, 6cyl 4 speed manual, 505000kms, original, untouched and only 2 owners, the one I purchased it off had it since '85. $1400!!!

The build started.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...5CA076EBCB.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...BCBFA681E5.jpg

All the useless stuff...

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...EDC47CAAF8.jpg

Somewhere along the line I lost alot of photos, but the engine was fitted into the Blue cars Chassis and i started mocking up the stuff i needed before paint.

for years I wanted to make a decent Exhaust.

1 7/8" primary pipes, flanges, v band clamps and mufflers. Extractors in mild and exhaust in stainless twin 3".

Left side, first primary.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...7D8A3B8FED.jpg

2 hours later, I had this:

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...8E65253376.jpg

Then, 4 hours later I had the drivers tacked

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...57915C71CE.jpg

Exhaust and mufflers mounted under the car

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...A57FC5B2C4.jpg

Extractors getting welded

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...86D6087EC6.jpg

Exhaust getting tig'd

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...48DAF2576B.jpg

Now, onto the engine. It needed a birthday. Carby was decided.

Dove A Ported heads, set up for stud rockers
Edelbrock RPM "air gap"
Comp Cams camshaft kit
Harland sharp gold series rockers
Demon 850 mechanical seconds
MSD dizzy kit
Fuel pump and reg still undecided.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...2E11E363A1.jpg

It was then decided after many talks with my dad and Queensland Transport, that i would use the Blue body. This was OK in the department of transport eyes, as long as the old body was destroyed. It was a sad day, i sent the old body to Jeep heaven. It was too rusty and had a very dodgy repair from a previous accident.

Now that everything was dummy fitted the firewall needed repairing from removing the heater box and allowing for the engine:

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...8FDAF63F90.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...92207A0323.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...BBBD6FCE7E.jpg

Then, the body came off onto a body roller I made.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...1526FC9D02.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...AAAC28E4D3.jpg

The body was painted underneath, rust proofed and sprayed.

Colour was always going to be Ford "Seduce". This was before the black highlights were done.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...EB8F976312.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...726977D7E1.jpg

NUT347 18-02-2015 07:17 PM

8 Weeks until my wedding, i decided to use the jeep as my wedding car... big mistake.

Chassis at my place, ready for a bit of work.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...C8086D1D34.jpg

Bumper mounts welded up, exhaust fitted etc. Ran out of time to get the chassis powder coated, next year I think.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...333080A035.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...53F533F44D.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...1C88893CE9.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...D82F27033D.jpg

got a call, body is all done, chassis on the trailer ready to go.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...06BC7F9B1D.jpg

Back together

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...D3FB8AD4B7.jpg

And some photos.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...D7E588DF09.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...38D6D065FE.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...7F62D90462.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...AA3CE0CA17.jpg

The photos do not do the colour any justice, it's amazing.

In the shade it looks almost burgundy, but in the daylight it turns almost bright red with so much metal and the white pearl...

The whole car has now been prep sanded and only buffed where the badges etc are going, ready to be put back together. I have 6 weeks till dead line.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...61F96E6319.jpg

Heaps more to come, full autometer dash, power booster deleted in favour of a remote one under the gaurd, hydraulic handbrake conversion, new brakes, bearings, uni joints, hubs. 33s and 15x10 alloys still to go on, but it doesn't fit in the shed with them on

New door handle gaskets finally turned up from the states

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...DFD178183C.jpg

Then....

Tried to fit the radiator. Must be a difference between the 6cyl front aprons compared to the V8s. Tried to fit the V8 radiator to find it was wayyy off from fitting.

Almost ready to slam the shed shut and come back after my wedding I bit the bullet and got the grinder out and decided to make my alloy Falcon one fit.

Came up alright, had to cut the support brackets out but I welded some bracing back in on the inside.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...39C88D4B6E.jpg

Upside, it will stay cool as with this rad, as before hammering through soft sand it use to creep up quite easy.

Anyway, got my dash back. I welded it all up and my panel beater glassed and smoothed it. Turned out well..

Before

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...8D33CE6AA7.jpg

After!

Grill is back now too all repainted

Seats, carpet and shifter fitted

Well, after 2 pretty full on days it's pretty much done.

Thanks to my mates and my dad, really can't express the help I've had on this build.

Tomorrow is road worthy, Tuesday/Wednesday is back at the panel beaters getting a few things tidied up, cairns for work Thursday, Friday it's detailed, weekend is tidying up a few things then it's off for a drive to the central coast of NSW lol.

It drives great, stays nice and cool with the e series alloy radiator. Love driving it again, it's so amusing.

Few pics anyway.

********ing LOVING it!!!

Got it detailed, 2 days before i had to leave for my wedding in yamba.

Drove it out to my mrs parents place in canungra without any issues.

Monday morning loaded it up and headed off to yamba. Raining most of the way made it interesting. Got a lot of looks and thumbs up on the highway.

Arrived at the house in yamba

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...632C7DF5CC.jpg

Tucked into the garage for a sleep lol

No issues other then the starter motor getting too hot from the exhaust, had to leave it for an hour to cool down.

Did about half an hour in soft sand and the temp came up a bit, not too worried about that, quite normal for a petrol v8 pushing a bus lol.

NUT347 18-02-2015 07:25 PM

After a few starter issues I bit the bullet and splashed out on a new CVR unit.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...76076EC57E.jpg

Adds 3 hp ;-)

Another pic on the beach, straddie this time lol.

COFFMAN 18-02-2015 07:27 PM

Very noice....................................

NUT347 18-02-2015 09:05 PM

Thanks mate!!

And that's where it's at today.

In the process of sorting out the tune at the moment, seems like the 850 might be a bit small, might have to go 950cfm.

Future plans.. Dunno. I've broken a lot of rear diffs over the years so I'm looking into a diff conversion, maybe a 9", or a patrol h233.

I want a cable shifter for the D20 and I need another carpet kit that includes the back section. probably wouldn't mind getting the door trims redone to match the seats. The seats are NC fairlane seats re trimmed.

Annnnd maybe one day a new set of wheels, they are a bit pitted and ratty, wouldn't mind either black rims with a beadlock or chrome.

Cheers for looking!

Awesome build mate, great pics too.
Love seeing the old FSJs still going hard and looking awesome!
Well done
Matt.

Richo 19-02-2015 11:49 AM

Nice work Nut.

Looks like you already know a motor trimmer, but Tru-Fit car carpets in Vic do carpet sets for Chero's, including the rear cargo area.

http://trufitcarpets.com.au/custom-fit-car-mats/

Patrol diff would be ideal, within bees dick (0.3mm) of same stud pattern. Will be wide though, GQis 63" vs Chero 59 approx IIRC. GU diff is a few inches wider again

Mickb 19-02-2015 02:15 PM

I remember that at black duck ...you drowned it on the very first day if i remember correctly ..than on the last day with the blown motor you managed to get it going enough to send it back through the mud again ..i can still remember the bad noises coming out of that motor you where not kind to it:lol::lol: ..cheers mick

Cheers for the link! I will get onto them ASAP.

Yeah the patrol diff (GQ) is 100mm wider, trying to suss out a way to get it shortened at the moment, it isnt looking easy though. I already have one too, going to send it into my diff bloke soon to see if he can get billet axles made shorter for it.

Yep that was me, haha.

First day, second run it bent the rods. We were spewing though because they ended up draining it and didnt tell us that the first day didnt count, which is why we gave it a go again on the last day, but the motor was pretty bad, down 2 cylinders haha.

I wouldn't even dream of getting it dirty these days!! ;)

Great work!
If I had the coin I would like to do a Ford V8 swap. Stuff this GM LS crap. :p :monkey:

NUT347 20-02-2015 03:29 PM

Thanks fellas!!

To be honest if this didn't already have a big block I would have done a turbo'd LS1 without a doubt.

My brother is about to build an SJ too, it will have an LS for sure.

Fruju 20-02-2015 06:57 PM

Yes, fortunately or unfortunately, however you take it, there are more options available going the LS route.

Jimmyb 21-02-2015 03:22 PM

Gotta be one of the best presented FSJ's in Australia bar none.

NUT347 17-04-2015 08:46 PM

Not much to update, I did rescue an 80 series from the second lagoon at Bribie a few months back. It got shared on the bribie beach page and got a few cool reponses!! I must admit, it was pretty fun haha.

Heading to rainbow to camp in a few weeks, can't wait!!

NUT347 06-05-2015 08:20 PM

So it blew a head gasket a while back.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...D80F912BBB.jpg

We are not to sure why as yet, the tune is spot on and it hasn't got a lot of timing. Only thing I can think of is when it gets really hot (intake temp wise) it could be detonating, going to get it on a dyno in the next few weeks.

I got the heads reco'd anyway. The bottom end needs a bit of a freshen up too :( my new shed can't come soon enough, as I've been storing the jeep at my dads place the last couple of months and he doesn't have the room!

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...C0238F45E5.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...BCA9DAC465.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...DED854F9B1.jpg

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...1B786C5DC9.jpg

Took a bit more timing out just incase, you couldn't see any detonation marks on the old gaskets or plugs and the heads weren't warped and it hasn't gotten hot, very strange.

NUT347 06-05-2015 08:31 PM

Made up a storage/speaker box for the back last week (will have to get some completed photos once it's carpeted). If you can imagine, the two outside sections are sub boxes, amp in the middle and the large section is for the spare, the two batteries still sit either side and the top goes on in one piece and the fridge has tie down points and fits on top. Makes looking out the rear window interesting though lol.

Also, 2000kms and a set of unis bite the dust. Smushed all the rollers and munched them up. Really need to sort this new diff out, more on that later.

All packed up and ready for rainbow.

As you can see the spare didn't make it into its box I made, instead I hired a camper and put the spare on the draw bar, and loaded the jeep up with some tools, just expecting every problem I suppose.

....and lucky I loaded the tools....

Fkn hire trailer. Someone doesn't know how to tighten wheels nuts. Couldn't feel a thing until bang.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...563717403C.jpg

Took 3 studs out of the left side and put them on the right with the spare. Got it going again.

Jeep ran awesome all weekend!

Here's a screen shot from my mates dash cam. Look closely, the wheel is on the right and the trailer is higher then the roof!

So a quick freshen up over Christmas for the engine was planned, then it got out of hand.

http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/f...613DCF66D8.jpg

4.5" scat crank with 2.2" mains
454 6.7" Chev rod
4.390" 429 Pistons

Makes it 545 cubes ;)

New comp cam, not overly big, 3000-6500rpm, 590" lift, 282 over 50 with 110 lobe sep.

New springs, chain, lifters, retainers etc.

Almost went dual tunnel ram but the rear carby would have fouled on the firewall, so just going single 1150cfm now with the same intake.

On the left of that picture is the new transfer case shifter (cable jb fab) can pick front or rear high or low separately, arb compressor and 9" 35spline airlocker off to the left.

Box is coming out and getting rebuilt and a new converter.

Car is going back to the panel beaters too after I get the engine out finally.

Hope fully it will be back with the new diff and engine complete!

Earlier in the year I ended up fitted my JBFab twin stick kit for my transfer.

Was an absolute prick of a job, but I got it done. Eventually. After lots of swearing. It's done. Got the transfer case rebuilt at the same time. $1200 later, had a bent main shaft lol!

Just gotta get new carpet now.

Also did a disc brake rear conversion. I should have waiting for the new Diff but I wanted to go on a camping trip and tow a trailer, and the brakes were shithouse. The rear drums didn't even work.

I used GQ discs and Subaru brumby front calipers. Should be able to rig up a working handbrake now too.

Also got new Tyres and the rims power coated. I ended up getting procomp xtreme MTZs. They are an awesome tyre, much better all round compared to the wranglers and really good in the wet.

Bought yet another doner jeep and managed to pillage some parts out of it, one being these seats. Original 84s, they are awesome and mint condition.

Also took it to a local show n shine and got runner up best 4x4, got beaten by a full tube comp truck lol

And a few pics of moreton island. Was a top weekend!

Other then using 260odd liters of fuel it ran faultless all week.

My ute was in Sydney for a job and I flew back for a couple of days and used the jeep for work, popped the Diff on the way to the post office! tow truck home and now it's been sitting since May.

NUT347 22-01-2017 08:35 PM

Well, decided I wanted to get the jeep running for my Christmas holidays!

Started by pulling the engine out

Surprising how good this thing ran, when the rings from pots 1,3 and 7 came out like this.

Motor was sent off for machining and balancing around early December, few days later we had all the bits back. Took it down to drew at Pacer Mechanical for assembly. Bit of detail when into the machining to make sure the compression was right, but turned out perfect on 9.8:1.

All up and running. Have to say, it's a bit of a menace now!

NUT347 22-01-2017 08:36 PM

Spent the last remaining days at work using this thing to commute, it's practical... :drinks2:
