Mud terrain tire recommendations Hi all
I am planning to get new tires and I was doing some research. So far I tend towards Mickey Thompson MTZ P3 or BFGoodrich MT KM2 but would be interested what others have on their WJ. Any good recommendations potentially also toward load capacity (is 119 or 120 enough or should I better go for 123?). I have the Mickey Thompson as 315/75/16 and they are quite loud. Wouldn't mind but they are also 400 Dollar each while the BFG are around 310. My new measures with be 265/75/16. Thanks for any input. Joerg Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk |
I've had the Cooper STT pros until I bought my WG. I would buy them again as its like being on rails on or off road. Very chip resistant also.
I've had mickeys in the past and rate them also. Only thing bad I've heard about the BFs is they wear quickly. That's from mates not personal experience though. |
I am running MTR Kevlars and so far they have been nice, also the maxxis bighorns seem to be good value.
Personally i have had a bad experience with coopers, had them in my dads car and the lugs would tear into the tire causing large unrepairable holes, and on my brothers car they would slip on the rims under heavy braking on road, which caused the bead to rip and start leaking, also some scary moments trying to stop :toilet: |
I've never used Mickey Thompson or Cooper tyres but I know people with a clue that have, and they wouldn't waster their money on them again.
A cousin of mine has Summit Mud Hogs and found them to be really good for the money. Way better than the BFG AT's he had previously. Don't believe the marketing hype of the bigger brands is my best advice, also don't listen to people without a clue, they often just regurgitate their own biases. Ronny Dahl has some "honest" tyre reviews on how YouTube channel, amy be worthwhile watching. Jason |
Reducing unsprung weight is what it's all about for me but may not be a consideration for others. With 15" rims I run BFG's because they have always been lighter when compared to anything else, not sure if it's the same with 16's

Im running Comforser3000's, (admittedly on a JK) cheap, 3ply sides, taken a truck load of beating over 2 years and 40000kms including 2 high country trips, and better in the wet than the Cooper STT's I used to have.

I too have Comforser 3000s on my JK. I paid $180 a tyre from Huntsman Products online for 265s.
I love them, they are light truck rated, I have them down to 12 psi on sand and have been great. I've done long highway trips, plenty of sand and mud driving and they haven't even looked like wearing after 10k or more I've put on them. I'm going to definitely get another set soon in 33s this time. |
On my toyota 1.2T work pickup I run Toyo AT's on 16inch rims they are a light truck tyre but are very quiet and so far the wear suggests they should do between 80-100K kms, never had any qualms with braking or cornering and they are pretty good in the bog as well.

Wow, thats really great and more than I was hoping to get as a reply.
I did watch some of the videos from Ronny and I actually had the Nitto also in mind. I did not know about the Comforser Tires but they look great and the price is awesome (thanks a lot Nanook and Freetripper). In the end it will be a mix of the tire, sending cost and fitting. I found a local tire shop who offers the Nitto tire for 280 per tire. This would save at least 20 dollar per tire for sending as well as fitting. And I can visit them on the weekend to actually have a look at the tire. The Comforser is certainly my second choice since it is has a just unbeatable price. Thanks again to all of you. Joerg PS: I am sorry for spamming the forum with too many postings and questions lately. |
I just ordered the Comforser CF3000 from Huntsman Products. They also have steel wheels which fits perfectly to my current alignment. The tires are 10.4 inch wide compare to the 12.4 of the 35 inch. So with the offset of -25 its perfect and I do not need to change anything else on the body.
And they are in Melbourne not so far from where I am living so I can quickly pop by this week to pick them up. Thanks again for the recommendation. |
I got my wheels last week and put them on the Jeep last Weekend.
Here are some pics: http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...a79dd45cb2.jpg http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...a7a08038cd.jpg http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...a7a1ca8d1e.jpg I really like them, and I think they even look better than the 35 inch. I also received my lift kit yesterday and I will lower the Jeep over the weekend. Thanks again for the recommendation Jamie and Freetripper. |
I really wanted those flares on my car but they wouldn't reply to my emails :(
How did you manage to keep the washer bottle there? that had to go to fit my tires. |

I did a lot of research and came across the comforsers on the net. I then read as many reviews as possible as they were cheap in case they were nasty as well. I never read a bad word about them. |

I already have some of the ebay ones that work quite well, just drop too early on the front and rub slightly under full flex. But atleast they bolt outside for easy removal.http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/...fc04feba13.jpg |

They are alright, you get what you pay for as they are a cheaper option, but i agree mine are much easier too fit, for yours you will need to pull the interior and doors apart too get to the back flares, not very fun to do. |

However, I have too much other stuff I already want to bring back, so that I decided to live with what I have. I already spend too much money the last couple of months to get this car running. I need to focus on the important stuff before I can put lipstick on the pig. |
